NeoGAF's Must See Horror/Thriller Movies

Status
Not open for further replies.
Ok this is how this thread is going to work, the OP will consist of several lists filled entirely by GAF's recommendation. This will cover all "sub-genres" of horror ie. Gore porn and the like and I hope to cover everything. My idea is to create a resource of horror and thriller movies that are at least above average and worth watching.
Rules:
1. Your movie will only be put up in the OP if it is seconded by another GAF member
2. Everybody's opinion is valid
3. No spoilers of any kind for the movies (I find this sort are infinitely better going in blind)
4. Please post the name, date and section of your desired movie to make this whole thing easier

- The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
- The Exorcist (1973)
- The Omen (1976)

- Haze (2005)
- Naked Blood (1995)
- Ringu (1998)
- Vital (2004)

- Evil Dead: Army of Darkness (1992)
- Drag me to Hell (2009)
- Brain Dead/Dead Alive (1992)
- Slither (2006)

This is a barebones OP, I haven't slept in a few days so have mercy. It will be updated regularly and if I've left out any sub-genres or you feel I should change something then let me know and I'll definitely consider it. If anyone wants to do graphics for a fancier OP then go for it.

So hurry up and get the obvious ones out of the way first, I'm starting with nothing to assume a non-bias role.

Thriller
- Alien (1979)
- Aliens (1986)
- Blue Velvet (1986)
- Rear Window (1954)
- Shutter Island (2010)
- The Shining (1980)
- The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
- Jaws (1975)
- The Birds (1963)
- The Terminator (1984)
- Memento (2000)
- Rosemary's Baby (1968)
- Se7en (1995)
- Maniac Cop (1988)
- Cloverfield (2008)

Until later retooling I'll keep Thriller movies as ones where no protagonists die. Should make this a tad easier for now unless I think otherwise.

Thriller is pretty broad term but here are some I love:

Antichrist
REC
Cloverfield
Halloween
The Thing
Tetsuo
28 Days Later
Zombieland

Thrillers: Rear Window, Vertigo, Diabolique, Blue Velvet
More, uh, straightforward Horror: The Silence of the Lambs, The Vanishing (1988)

Yeah there might be some controversy as to the placing and with Thriller movies because some are pretty subjective. I myself see The Shining as a Thriller movie, whilst others would see it as a Horror one.
Again, I'm open to suggestion to OP changes. Also, I added a new rule so if you are going to suggest a movie, please also suggest a placing for it. It would make this so much easier so I don't have to check each film for the date is was released etc.

I'd see all of those as Horror myself except Zombieland? Black Comedy or is that just me :lol

Recently watched and would like to nominate both The Thing and The Fly.

Both classic sci-fi/horror, I guess.

Edit: Would also like to nominate Alien and Rosemary's Baby.

What was the name of that Japanese movie where the guy ate people in his apartment? The cover had a picture of a lady's head on a plate.

But anyway, I want to vote for:

asian:
Visitor Q
Ichi the Killer

classic:
Jacob's Ladder
Eraserhead
El Topo
Blue Velvet

and I'll second DP's vote for Tetsuo(asian)

A few Japanese ones;

A Snake of June (Shinya Tsukamoto - 2002)
Audition (Takashi Miike - 1999)
Haze (Shinya Tsukamoto - 2005)
Naked Blood (Hisayasu Sato - 1995)
Ringu (Hideo Nakata - 1998)
Vital (Shinya Tsukamoto - 2004)

And a classic horror from 1962;

Carnival of Souls (Herk Harvey - 1962)

Heado Plato?
I'm going to second Jacobs Ladder and do you want Blue Velvet as a Horror or Thriller because a poster had it as thriller before.

I'm not a big fan of slasher films by far, I actually HATE modern-day horror movies because of this, but the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre was pretty amazing when I first watched it a few years ago on Halloween. The way it was shot was just completely unsettling and had me shitting in my pants during the starting credits.

Another film that scared the hell out of me was the re-release of the original Exorcist. GODDAMN. The number of months it took me to get myself over that film..It doesn't help either that a photo from the movie will occasionally pop up in random picture threads.

Night Of The Living Dead

Rosemary's Baby

The Omen

The Excorcist

Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark (made for TV movie--'73)

The Brood

Rabid

Ghost Story

The Shining

The Entity

edit: yes, TCM is a must see as mentioned already.

Its funny, to me TCM is still frightening today for the exact reasons you describe whilst The Excorcist does not hold up at all (to me). When I first saw TCM my mate convinced me and himslef that
the ending film was real and taken from the real life police file
:lol Ah to be young and naive again.

Classic
The Shining
Jacob's Ladder
The Thing
Silence of the Lambs
Seven
Nightmare on Elm Street
Halloween

Modern
Session 9
Shutter Island

I also strongly recommend the first season of Millenium for any horror buffs. It's very much in tone with some of the movies I listed.

I found out what that movie was. :lol

It's pretty good though. I don't know if I'd say it's "must see" but if you want to see a cannibal horror movie, check it out.

I'm not a huge horror movie fan but I loved the Dawn of the Dead remake.

Zombieland(not really horror) but one of my favorite movies.

Oh wow, no one mentioned Psycho, for shame ya'll (myself included).
It's pretty much a perfect movie and a mandatory viewing for any movie buff.

Those are another two stand-outs. Jacob's Ladder is more psych horror but The Thing is straight up monster movie.

I'll put Shutter under Thriller, not a horror movie by any classification I don't think
unless you believe that Schindler's List is a horror movie?

Few classics;

Dracula (Terence Fisher - 1958)
Dracula: Prince of Darkness (Terence Fisher - 1966)
Dr Terror's House Of Horrors (Freddy Francis - 1965)
The Bird With the Crystal Plumage (Dario Argento - 1970)
The House That Dripped Blood (Peter Duffell - 1971)
The Mummy (Terence Fisher - 1959)
Witchfinder General (Michael Reeves - 1968)

I'll definetly second that, can't believe I forgot it in the first place.

Most of my classic pics have already been mentioned

Modern horror:
Eden Lake
Martyrs
The Hills Have Eyes remake
28 Days Later

Gore Porn:
Brain Dead / Dead Alive

To me, psychological thrillers are a subgenre of horror. I view horror subgenres as monster, slasher, and psycholgical thrillers. There are probably a bunch more, just can't think of them at the moment.

I thought let the right one in was a romance movie.

Oh yeah, for gore porn, Martyrs is definitely good.

I guess in some aspects it is, but some scenes are downright creepy.

ill second Session 9

A wasted location if there ever was one. Degrading such a beautiful abandoned insane asylum with laughter inducing hammy theatrics is a crime. My brothers and I made it through the dreck simply because we were curious if the building was a sanitorium my grandpa was in charge of.

This infamous clip is courtesy Session 9.

All Vintage -

Thewomaninblack.jpg

(1989)
Probably the scariest movie I've ever seen... and I've seen them all.

from-beyond-grave.jpg

(1973)
Best of the Peter Cushing (Hammer/Amicus) era.

thething.jpg

Yup.

All of the older stuff I was going to recommend has already been mentioned dozens of times, so I'll post some newer stuff that I think people should check out.

I watched Splinter a couple of weeks ago and thought it was pretty good for a modern horror movie. I don't recall at any point thinking "Why would you do that? Are you a moron?" at any point in the movie. That alone made it better than most modern horror films. Another thing I liked was that it didn't use any CG for the monster. It was all live action. I don't know that I'd classify it as "must-see," but it's definitely worth watching if you get the chance. (If you do decide to watch it I wouldn't recommend watching the trailer since it has a lot of spoilers.)

Joshua is another one that I enjoyed a lot. It's a very character-driven movie which is the sort of thing that I enjoy.

i would say your taste in horror is bad but meh.. different strokes and all that. i love that movie. Its probably my favorite horror movie. The only other film besides Repo Man where i can watch it more than 20 times and still find something new in it.

No one's going to second Frozen because it played on like 10 screens on earth. Shame.
I can make exceptions if people put effort into selling the movie without spoiling it. The rules are in place because most people are fucking lazy and just post names.

I'm not putting any more up unless people put the category and date now. Googling is already getting old.
