No I'm not talking about porn, basically anime that is targeted towards adults. The only anime TV shows I got into were Berzerk and Afro Samurai and really liked those. My friend recommended Rouri Kenshin (Samurai X) TV show (not the OVA's), and after watching up to episode 8, I thought it was average, some of the comedy seemed childish and looked like it was from Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z, and the fighting was a downgrade from the violence from Berzerk and Afro Samurai.

Anyway's I am looking for something with:
-action (sorry no dramas, romance etc, unless it's a side story to the action)
-good story telling (things I like, mythology, politics, consipiracy, end of the world, war and etc)
-good characters (characters have some depth, and not just going through the motions)
-no movies (I'm looking for a TV show not a movie)
-adult (violence, curse words, boobs, and etc are all good, if none are there it doesn't matter as long it is not childish ie Pokemon, DBZ)
-NEW I actually don't care if the series isn't adult, the 2 main things I care about are:
STORY: I'd like the plot to be something that continues, with a big story arc, basically after each episode finishes I want to be like "damn, need to see what happens next".
ACTION: This is a must for me, not interested unless it has action, though that doesn't mean story should take a back seat.

EDIT:
OK just an update, I decided to give Samurai X another go by skipping the filler episodes of Season 1 and only watching the first 11 episodes for character introductions. I watched Season 2 and thought it was quite good. The next show I am going to watch is Cowboy Bebob (note I only watch one show at a time), I will probably check out Ghost in the Shell after that, then I don't know but I'll use this thread for the next decision.

Also for the people who are saying what i'm looking for isn't adult and violence, curse words and boobs are all childish. I may have been misunderstood, I meant that is a plus for me however if the plot and characters is adult I don't really care about that stuff.

Also what I meant when I said "no dramas, romance etc", I didn't mean I don't want this at all, I meant I don't want this to be the main focus for example, I am not looking for a court drama anime (even if the plot is really adult), I want something with at the least a bit of action but with a top notch cast, dialogue and story. Berzerk and Samurai X are good examples, they have action but the story and characters and dialogue are all top notch (warning some may disagree).

EDIT 2
Damn, I made this thread over a year ago, I have no idea who bumped this thread again. Anyway since I created this thread, I have watched only 3 animated series as I have been busy more than I expected.

Cowboy Bebop - did not like this and gave up halfway through, some episodes were interesting, but I prefer shows that have a story arc that continues, yes I know am gonna get a lot of hate for this comment
Avengers Earths Mightiest Heroes - stopped watching after a few episodes, I did not like this which was surprising as I enjoy other superhero cartoons like Spiderman (90s and Spectacular), X-Men Evolution, Justice League. Maybe I need to check out Batman TAS, as I heard good things about that.
Avatar - this was incredible, it is probably the best animated show I have ever watched beating Berzerk and Rouri Kenshin

I currently have a lot of free time and may watch another animated series, currently I am watching Game of Thrones (not a animated series), but after I finish marathoning this series I will probably check out another animated series. I am thinking of checking out Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, is it any good.

I hear Gantz and Black Lagoon are good. I've read the Gantz Manga and watched part of the anime. About the same and I really like the manga.

Lets see...

Seirei no Moribito
- action, good story telling, good characters, Adult

Samurai 7 - action, good story telling, good characters

BECK- Mongolian Chop Squad - good story telling, good characters, Adult

Eden of the East - action, good story telling, good characters

Gankutsuou - The Count of Monte Cristo - action, good story telling, good characters, Adult

Michiko E Hatchin
- action, good story telling, good characters, Adult

If not all of them look good to you, I would definitely give Seirei no Moribito and Gankutsuou - The Count of Monte Cristo a watch.

OK I have to go do something for the next 2 hours, keep the recommendations coming when I come back I'ma google the recommendations and see what I like thanks :D

If you liked Afro Samurai, I'd heartily suggest Samurai Champloo and also Cowboy Bebop. Both are more adult, action-oriented with great characters and dubs.

Mononoke
Mushishi
Shigurui
Kuchu Buranko
Kemonozume
Windy Tales
Basilisk: Kouga Ninpou Chou
Kaiba
Kino's Journey

They're definitely not targeted at children

Hard to tell when you say no dramas. Serious adult anime tends to be dramatic? :p

GunGrave (mob)
Shigurui (swordsmen)
Basilisk (ninja)

Yes good sir, very very adult.
not really

Anyway, I will use this thread to say that Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo are indeed awesome.

Kemonozume is pretty "gritty" in its own special way. It's also very fun to watch, too. You should give it a shot.

Yeah, Gantz is pretty much what you're looking for in this department. It goes overboard on all of this shit. It's not a greatly thought provoking show, but everyone I've showed it to loved it, even if only as a guilty pleasure. Elfen Lied as well, although it can occasionally slip into anime slapstick every now and then.

Of course, Ultimate Hellsing is probably the only thing I can think of off the top of my head that pretty much fits ALL of your requirements. Either way, I'm sure you'll enjoy all of these shows on some level.

that "action" criteria hurts a lot of stuff, but hunt anidb for 'seinen' things with other genre tags you like.

i'd recommend planetes, but it may not be up your ally. also Perfect Blue, which is a movie, but a damn good one

Watch the Kenshin OVAs. Trust and Betrayal specifically...think of it as a 4 episode series!

To 2nd a few noted
Baccano
Black Lagoon
Hellsing Ultimate
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
GITS SAC 1/2

More recommendations
Macross Plus(4 Episode series!)
Escalflowne
Gundam Stardust Memory/8th MS Team

If you haven't yet, watch the OVA series. The TV series and movie sucked by comparison.

I'd also recommend the Karas OVAs, though it can be a little flashy.

I can't say I agree with all the ones that have been suggested, but there are definitely some great ones there. The top two for me would be Cowboy Bebop and Bacanno!

BTW, there aren't really that many good action anime shows that target adults. Most action shows target kids, suck or stall after a promising start.

You seem to have "adult" confused with "adolescent".

Anyway, I'd recommend Gankutsuou and Planetes but they're probably too boring for you.

Fuck, there seems to be allot of decent anime TV shows, so I will check a few out for now. I have saved most suggestions on notepad so I dont forget.

For now im gonna check out:
Cowboy Bebop (if I like that I'll check out Samurai Champloo next)
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Gantz
Hellsing OVA
Ghost in the Shell SAC
Seirei no Moribito

If you haven't seen it Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal is pretty damn good. Touch, Toradora and Cross game are also pretty good but not very "adult."

awesome thanks
i'ma search them right now :D

EDIT: "5 Centimeters Per Second" trailer looks nice
thanks

I always wanted to like anime but could never get into it, i enjoyed Afro Samurai and Blood The Last Vampire and that's about it but i've watched the first episode of Samurai Champloo and that seems ok too. Although that was at least a month ago and i've not had any desire to watch any more yet.:D

I'll second votes for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Planetes, Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop.

Berserk is great, but few things approach the amount of red paint that they used for that show. As for Rurouni Kenshin, different folks, different strokes. The beginning tends to be more lighthearted. Since you already put in eight episodes, I'd suggest you watch up through episode eleven just to finish the character introduction, and then skip straight to episode 28 and have fun. It's a different show(much darker and more violent) from there on out.

Seems like everyone else has hit every other suggestion worth making, based on your criteria, so I'll just leave you with that. :D

Check out Victorian Romance Emma if you want to check out a period show. It is based on a manga series and the creator is a huge fan of the Victorian so everything from the clothing to the architecture feels authentic.

Also check out anything by Shinkai, someone already mentioned 5cm Per Second. The guy is known for his "background porn", so pretty.

However my personal favorite anime couple of all time are Jinto and Lafiel from Banner/Crest of the Stars. The anime is a scifi epic, but the slow relationship that develops between the two over 3 seasons and an ova is one of the best and most touching I've ever seen.

Cross Game also isn't strictly a romance anime, it is a relationship show with some baseball mixed in. It is a very touching show and the first episode punches you right in the gut.

Baccano, Durarara.
This man tells the truth.

Do you like gangster films? Train robberies? A little Tarantino-styling? A dash of humor and some fantasy mixed in too? Baccano is pretty much that. A 1930s era film about a variety of seemingly random characters who all seem to cross paths. Gang wars, robberies, alchemists, and gunfights. It's actually my favorite "mature" anime in the past 5 or so years. Really, really good, and the dub is surprisingly well-done. It's based off of a light novel series by Ryohgo Narita.

For a while no one even bothered with it, but recently it's been coming back and I've been seeing more people recommend it. This is also probably due in part to Durarara!!, which is a show also based on a book series by Ryohgo Narita, currently airing in Japan now. They're even by the same studios. So if you like one, there's a good chance you'll like the other. There's lots of good recommendations in this thread, but I'd highly advise you to at least give it look-up on Hulu or FUNimation's streaming site.

Also, type "Monster anime" into Google and check that out too. Fantastic, realistic series about a doctor who saves a young boy's life, but the boy grows up to be a killer and the doctor must track him down. You might've heard of it already, but it's worth a mention because it's also very good.

I would recommend Baccano over half of those, and Monster over all of them.
