******THREAD RULES******
1. No fanboyism
2. Stick to iPad related gaming news
3. No discussion of flash
4. If you want to compare the iPad with other hardware, go here

I personally think the asking price for an oversized ipod touch is way too much but I am interested in seeing some games ported across and other titles which will use the extra power and resolution.

Simple, larger screen for one. Better hardware for two.
Controls will be worse because of the size. The borders are so thick that you can't hold it with thumbs pressing onto the screen as easily. It's definitely going to suffer for its size.

People will be playing with their pointy fingers.

Way less portable than the iPod/iPhone or any other handheld device, for that matter. What's the point of gaming on the iPad, anyway? Or the point of the device itself? Really who exactly is this device targeting?

Perhaps you aren't the target but considering investors expect this to outsell what the iPhone did in its first year, I would say Apple should be fine with this product.

EDIT: Bite me.

I want The Real Civ on my iPad. Or failing that, at least Civ Rev with actual zoom capabilities.

There are a lot of indy PC strategy game developers that are going to be able to port their games to this without having to rethink everything like they would with the tiny iPhone screen.

Exactly. The same folks who doubted the iPhone as a gaming platform will eventually come around for the iPad.

iPhone thread... with a few games on release. I wonder how many pages that one would go to... because there are no other games being developed?

The iPhone is small and portable. It fits in your pocket and gaming on it is convenient. If I wanted to game on something as big as the iPad, I'd game on my laptop. The games are better too.

Funny you say that considering the iPad hasn't been released. Also funny that the games that were available when the iPhone was released are probably the least impressive games on the platform.

Man, some of you guys can be so pessimistic/cynical.

If you don't have the imagination to see the potential, that's totally fine, but personally, I find the iPhone to be great in terms of gaming, so by extension, something with a larger screen and more power is definitely promising.

Obviously, some things won't work as well (virtual d-pads, etc), but somethings will work MUCH better (point-and-clicks, 3D tilt games, board games etc).

I don't know why some people have to only see large expansive 3D adventures or whatever as the only viable way to play games.

a dungeon crawler would be cool.... hopefully new ways of controlling will show up

That would be very cool. The next 6 months will be very interesting to see how developers plan on pushing the envelope for this device.

look at those buttons. they'll be bigger than your face.

ugh. how NOT to do it.

anyway, that game aside, I think there's gonna be some real cool stuff on the iPad. it might take a few months to get cracking (took the iPhone game scene around a year for me) but it'll offer some cool stuff for sure.

but imagine a sub simulator... instead of clicking and using the mouse you would be interacting with the maps, the buttons directly

I hope to see a first person dungeon crawler, something like Etrian Odyssey.

Are the games more expensive than on iPhone? I'm sure I read about it recently.

Yup, some of the games announced have a price increase. I am sure it will depend if the game was just ported over or if the developers spent more resources in customizing it for the iPad.

The monster processor in the device for one.

the processor is not that monster. I think it's confirmed to be just a single core A8. I might be wrong.

Multi-player games on a single device could be major.

Disclaimer: I'm a total Apple Fanboy.

It is a launch title premium that they are charging. I expect prices to drop once the launch hysteria dies down and more games come online.

I for one cannot wait to get my hands on an iPad for its gaming potential. For those buying it day 1, what games are you looking forward to. For those on the fence, what type of games would push you to purchasing an iPad?
None of the screens shown in your OP look particularly inviting or interesting. :/

What the iPad needs to differentiate itself from laptops/netbooks gaming-wise are a couple high profile exclusives, imo. Can't build an interesting library if all you offer are PC and iPhone ports.

Is this big enough so it can be put in a sofa so two could play??

Holy crap! That's how poor PSP software sales are!? :lol

Then remember that graph is by revenue...

(though I think the numbers show a growing of the market, with total dollars being more, so less so of a negative effect on DS / PSP sales)

Personally, I think that extra resolution is all that extra "power" is going to buy you. Certain games may run with a smoother framerate but since its rumoured to use the same graphics chip as the 3GS only clocked faster and it has to output at a much higher resolution, I'm not expecting much. However, the iPad should encourage more developers to drop support for (or at least place less focus upon) the hobbled MBX Lite based idevices and that would help increase the overall graphics of games significantly.

I know it's revenue, but I can't help but think the drop of PSP hardware sales last year contributed.

I've found P&Cs to be wildly inferior on the iPhone even compared to sitting with a laptop on my legs, cords for mouse and power extending out of it. Maybe if someone made an iPhone-only P&C but the experience for games like Myst, BASS, and Simon the Sorcerer were hugely better when played with a mouse, simply due to them being developed for a platform with two buttons and a steady, precise selecting mechanism (cursor).
