Readers of the official iPad thread know that it's a bit impossible to easily find information on specific apps or cases, unless you are constantly keeping up with the thread. So here be a thread where one can easily find and discuss apps!

I will try to make what I feel is a comprehensive list of noteworthy apps across many categories. Of course, if you feel an app needs to be added just shoot me a pm or mention it in the thread.

Without further ado, the apps:

Helpful Links:
Gizmodo app review marathon

Video/Television

Air Video - Streams your videos to your ipad. Lots of GAF'ers swear by it. I haven't tried it yet.
Netflix - Uh, get it, immediately. Its fucking netflix.
ABC Player - It's like hulu, except without community or Cosmos. AKA Lost PLayer.

Books and Comics:

Kindle/iBooks - You should know what these are.
Marvel - A solid comic reader with a smattering of free titles. obviously its all marvel content.
Comics X - A wider range of titles, including marvel and image (walking dead!)

PDF/File Readers:
Goodreader - a great app for storing and viewing PDFs and other file types. Really easy to transfer files inside of itunes.

Music:

iElectribe - check out a demo here. its a digital electribe, and it works really well.

News/Journalism

NPR - a cool news app that fits the ipad format wonderfully. you can also listen to all of NPRs audio content through this app.
BBC News - an excellent dedicated news app that is formatted nicely to the ipad. free!
Eyewitness - a stunning new picture everyday. Seriously, a must download app. Free.
NY Times Editor's Choice: There is a premium version, but the free version is great as it is.
Zinio for iPad - its a digital magazine news stand, but it needs work. lacks the polish of something like iBooks.
Time - Its a great example of what's possible for magazines on the ipad, but its also not really worth it with the current pricing structure.

Games:
Go Here!

Productivity/Art:
Taska/Things - Very similar to-do apps, though Thins is way more polished but is also 4x the price. I've only used Taska, which is very accomplished.
iMockups - Its a design mockup tool that is pretty neat for certain areas of design, but it needs a lot of additional content to be truly uselful.
Sketchbook Pro - Its no substitute for photoshop or painter, but Its a decent painting utility
Adobe Ideas - like sketchbook pro, but with less complexity/depth. free!
Brushes -

$9.99. I like it. I had the iPhone version, and I appreciate the simplicity. Sweet playback too. Haven't figured out how to make it work with the brushes viewer app for the mac, though, even though it is iPad compatible.

Education/Reference:
WordBook XL

$2.99 I like this dictionary app. I also had this for iPhone. Perhaps not a defintive dictionary in terms of defintiions, but a lot of great features including a built-in speech syntehsiser, an online recorded one, and user selectable weblinks to other pages.
Elements - there is a lot of positive buzz for this digital periodic table of the elements. It features clean layout, video, and 3-D objects, and really shows what the ipad is capable of in terms of books like this.

Weather Station Pro -

I'm gonna stop here for tonight, but its a decent start. I'll be updating it a TON more tomorrow and I'll do my best to keep up with any suggestions or ideas that you guys have. This is my first official thread, so I would appreciate some feed back!

Rules:
Let's just keep it about iPad Apps, iPad accessories, and leave it at that, ya dig? Please don't bring that tech wars shit in here, it's just a place for iPad owners new and old to come in and discover cool new shit for their sweet new toy, ok?

Sweet.

I've been on the look out for a decent sleeve, and if I ever see the incase one, I might crack. A bit steep for $39 though.

At the moment, I'm using a folding velcroed pad that came with a camera bag. Actually pretty sweet.

I'm going to recommend:

Brushes: $9.99. I like it. I had the iPhone version, and I appreciate the simplicity. Sweet playback too. Haven't figured out how to make it work with the brushes viewer app for the mac, though, even though it is iPad compatible.

ok I'm definately gonna do my best to try out any apps that are recommended before I add them to the list, but if you want it added sooner, just add a little blurb about why its cool/noteworthy :D

I got to play with an iPad today, i'm very impressed with the form factor but I did have an overall "this is a big ipod touch" feeling, which is not necessarily a bad thing

The Flight Control HD app is awesome, looks beautiful, but I had a problem connecting to another iPad with bluetooth for some reason

Nice OP, I'm about 5 hours of use into my iPad, love it but i need more apps

The giant iPad touch feeling goes away as soon as you use the browser for an hour...fast and responsive...everything safari on iPod/iPhone is not sans flash

TVULite and TVUPlayer! Streams ~300 TV channels. I don't know what's e difference between the versions. Lite is free, though.

NEWS
Early Edition is working on Google Reader implementation, it will be perfect once done.
NewsRack is a very nice RSS reader.
Wikipanion and Articles offer nice and convenient wikipedia content.
This Day is free and recommended.

WORK
Instapaper is essential. ESSENTIAL
Notemaster is an iPhone app that remains useful on the iPad. It offers you full edit and synchronization with Google Documents content, and the display remains quite good as opposed to most other iPhone applications involving text.
Toodledo is a universal app for task management, quite efficient though not as good looking as Things.
I found in love with Paper's simplicity and design, it definitely makes me want to write and create nice looking articles.

PICTURES
Photogene is awesome to edit your pictures.
Pixyme is a fantastic little app for iPhone that you can add to your iPad.
CLIPish allows you to quickly find the picture you need, when you need. Any picture. It's an iPhone app but you need it on your iPad as well
EyeWitness not only delivers beautiful pictures each day, it also gives you pro tips on how the pictures were taken

MUSIC
SoundHound is an iPad killer app: hum your song and it will recognize it, let you browse lyrics, access to youtube official videos, covers, live, etc. Amazing app.
PianoMan offers practice on 150 classic songs, for one or two players. It makes you learn piano, for real.
Guitar from Frontier is another iPhone app that is easier to use on iPad than on iPhone, amazing app for people who can play guitar and know the chords.
StudioTrack is great to create quick demos of songs before more serious recording in a studio

WIFE Apps
Houzz to decorate your house
Zinio to buy her annual magazine subscriptions for a very cheap price
Gilt or GAP to browse stores in a brand new way
Weather HD

KID apps
Doodle Buddy to draw
Toy Story, it's free and you can record your own voice on each page. Very nice
Jirbo Says, nicely done
Crazy Face, excellent for quick laughs
Shape Builder, great iPhone app that plays better with the iPad touchscreen
Other favorites: Animal 360, Old Mac, Seuss ABC, ABC Animals, Mee Genius, Magic Piano, 5 in 1 kid apps

GAMES
Street Fighter 4 for iPhone plays very well on the iPad touchscreen
Mirrors's Edge is a fun, beautiful arcade game
Super Monkey Ball 2 still has an awful music, but it plays very very well
Air Hockey is free but they could definitely charge for it, great precision
Geometry Wars is growing on me, I still have trouble reaching the bomb but other wise the game is ace, my favorite iPad game
Spirit is an iPhone game that plays much better on the iPad
Real Racing HD is surprisingly good, I need to play it more in Career
Angry Birds is obviously a must have

OTHER
IMDB is so good on iPad. If you want to show a friend why the iPad offers a better experience than browing the web, look no further than this IMDB design
Other outstanding apps: eBay, Bloomberg, GoodReader, Marvel, ComicZeal, Pandora, France 24, AirVideo

Last advice: go to www.google.com/reader/play and add a bookmark on your home screen.
Google Reader Play has been perfectly formatted for the iPad. I love it.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned The Elements yet (or maybe I just missed it). I guess it's under education or entertainment or both.

It's a big gallery of the periodic table of the elements by Theodore Gray with stunning high res movies of samples for each element plus rotatable objects on secondary info screens for you to play around with. The writing is also interesting and not dry.

The wow factor is off the charts.

Highly recommended at $14

I'd really like try a sample of the book before I buy it. At 14 bucks its quite a bit outside of impulse range for me.

The MLB app is great. Still has a few bugs to be worked out but it is a great companion to any baseball fan. Definitely worth the $15.

Well, if you have an affinity for Chemistry and the sciences, I'd say it's a no brainer. But if all you were going to do with it is look at the rotating videos, then it's a tough sell.

It's the best zippered sleeve I saw at the Apple Store. and the bendable stand it comes with actually does work. I think this is a great case for someone who plans to use the iPad naked, but wants to quickly and easily slip it into a bag.

Wow, thanks for the comments, maybe I'll crack. I haven't seen any place around me that carries it, however. Just for clarification, which one is it you're referring to?

cool thread.

ilounge has an extensive list of cases and covers n' thangs.

very few reviews, though, as many of them are just hitting the market.

I would recommend ArtStudio as an art app. Lots of features, and only $0.99 for now. I think it's up to #3 on the app store sales charts for paid apps.

Re: cases, I ordered this sleeve from Waterfield:

Waterproof nylon exterior, plastic plate in the lining to protect the screen side, and a microsuede interior.

well shit. those are exactly what I was looking for. Now... how do I get a return that stupid apple case I ordered...

I think I'm gonna go for the smart case. I mean just look at this beauty:

The Neoprene Sleeve Plus:

That one, in black. Would have gotten it in Silver if they sold one in that color. I prefer the zippered version no nothing would slip in and scratch it.

I can only find the Family Friendly version. Is there a NSFW edition i should be getting instead?

Does the BBC app have adverts on it or something?

I sure hope they're not spending license fee money making a free news app for the rest of the world.

The goodwill that a free BBC app engenders around the world is valuable return that mere money can't buy. That said, I'll rarely use the app

not to have apples balls in my mouth too much, but their customer service is really good. Just called to cancel my order for the official apple case and there was no wait, and had no trouble canceling it. Short of getting a complimentary BJ I can't imagine a better customer service experince.

Sweet. Thanks for that. It looks like a cool choice, and the stand is nifty. I'm kind of concerned with the 'breathable' perforated edges, however. I like neoprene because it somewhat waterproofs the case. Useful for when I'm in a heavy downpour (even the sturdiest backpack can seep a bit of water), and a neoprene sleeve helps guard agaisnt that further.

In other news, searching the SF bags site and I see this, which is pretty sweet, and probably kind of what I want (horizontal velcroed sleeve). A bit pricey for my use at $60.

I wish I ahd the tools, and I'd just make my own.

I had to unlock the "adult" mode in the options, within the app.

This looks really cool. It looks more like a game than actual lessons, but if it has the right notes and stuff, I guess that's somewhat educational.

Is it all multi touch for chords and stuff? DOes it require to download songs, or are they all included?

I have no music experience, but as a game it looks kinda neat.

You'll be fine, unless you are submerged under water with your backpack on, and in that case you're going to have slighly higher priorities than the safety of your iPad.

I'd say get the inCase for now, until there is a much bigger selection to choose from. I'm sure I'll be buying a few cases during the life of the iPad....

Title makes it seem like it's a thread about the neogaf ipad app.

It's not bad but it's clear that the web app was designed for the small screen and I still prefer browsing GA on my phone

Could you post links? I'm not sure which apps exactly that you are referring to.

I got Clipish; how do I unlock it? Thanks

I actually refrained from suggesting it because it's a $14.99 app (previously $9.99, bumped up at iPad release - Man, I wish I had bought it before then). It's not really more functional than other PDF readers unless you're actually a scientist.

What i has going for it is that it has links directly into Pubmed, google scholar, etc (science/medical journal article search engines), and has a really nifty wireless sync with the Desktop App (which costs US$42 - wow, it's come down).

The sync works just like iTunes, slightly less robust, but wireless. You organise all your papers/pdfs in a very iTunes like ineterface (including metadata)and pair it with an iDevice. Once they detect each other on the network, you click sync, and it syncs over everything bi-directionally (you select which 'collections' to sync).

So I can browse the search engine on my iPad, download a PDF, and when I next open papers on my MAc, and click sync, everything syncs up.

It's pretty good. But Like I said, it's more expensive and designed for science professionals/students.

Oh, and it's a universal app for iPhone too.

If you're using a Mac, you might want to look at StreamToMe instead of AirVideo. They're essentially the same app, and I can tell you that StreamToMe's video quality is good. I was just watching Fringe remotely on my iPhone from my office (the app is universal between iPhone/iPad). Same price as AirVideo too, $3. The only reason I picked StreamToMe is because the interface is a little cleaner and more "Apple" than AirVideo's looked (from the screenshots I saw of it).

You really can't go wrong with either one, from what I've read about AirVideo and have experienced personally with StreamToMe. Its server-app is Mac only though (for now), so if you're on Windows your only option is AirVideo.

Other apps I love include.

Epicurious - So far the best cooking app on the iPad. I hope for a much better one some day though. I'd like one that can manage a user-created list of recipes, rather than just a collection of recipes from other sources. At the very least I should be able to make notes on them, and there needs to be a scaling feature so you can make a 4-serving recipe for 2 people (the math is easy, it's just having to do the math every time you look at the screen is a pain.)

NewsRack - I used to do all my RSS reading in Safari on my Mac. Now that my iPad has become my primary browsing device, I needed a proper RSS reader. I went with NewsRack because it's cheaper and equally/better reviewed than NetNewsWire, plus it's universal so I don't need to buy an iPhone app as well. I moved all my feeds into Google Reader last night and I'm in love with RSS all over again. It's no longer a chore to read all these fucking stories, and I can finally sync read-content over multiple devices. Plus it works with Instapaper (ESSENTIAL!) and a bunch of other services that are no where near as awesome as Instapaper.

Instapaper - Seriously fucking buy this. Using Instapaper will change your fucking life. No idea what I did before this.

Twitteriffic - A serviceable Twitter client. Will keep my held over until Tweetie Twitter for iPad is released.

PCalcLite - I figured I needed a free calculator app. This one includes "42" as a constant, so it wins by default.

TheEastonator said:

There's no need for it. NeoGAF looks great in Safari on iPad. I find that I'm deleting a lot of "viewer" iPhone apps that I installed on my iPad like Facebook and such. There's just no need for a Facebook app when Facebook works just fine in Safari. The same is true for a lot of similar apps.

For the record, I'm using a Loweprowe recycled camera bag as my all purpose man-purse.

It came with this padded velcro 'wrap', which actually holds the iPad really nicely.

Also, I downloaded PianoMan by Yudo (makers of 8-bit tone?), as mentioned above. It's basically a sort of Piano app crossed with a rhythm game. No real scoring, but uses real piano chords. On special for $2.99. It's pretty neat, and adds a bit more to just a piano app, especially if you're like me and don't know anything about music.
