What is Zeno Clash?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeno_Clash

Zeno Clash is a 3D fighting game or brawler, with some elements of a first-person shooter video game. It is the debut game of developer ACE Team and uses Valve Corporation's Source engine. It was first released for download through Valve's content delivery service, Steam, on April 21, 2009.

The game is set in the fantasy world of Zenozoik, and follows Ghat, a young man who is on the run from his vengeful siblings, and Deadra, his female companion, as they travel through strange and exotic lands.

In the main story mode, players assume the role of Ghat and progress through the world of Zenozoik, visiting various locations in a linear sequence. Gameplay is presented in first-person perspective, with occasional cutscenes in third-person perspective. When the player enters certain areas, it triggers a scripted sequence, initiating a battle in which the player must defeat all enemies to proceed. Ghat is proficient in martial arts, and can dodge or counter enemy attacks. While there is a strong focus on unarmed combat, Ghat can also obtain unconventional melee and ranged weapons by several means, such as disarming enemies. Intermittent segments of the game play similarly to a corridor-shooter.

In addition to the single-player story, Challenge Mode allows the player to defeat enemies while climbing a tower or descending into a pit.

Ultimate Edition New Features:

Atlus worked closely with ACE Team to refine the 2009 release, already running on the adaptable and 360 friendly Source engine, into a leaner, meaner beast. Visuals are running in native 720p and the game’s first-person fighting controls are all mapped to the Xbox’s button layout in what sounds like a reasonably intuitive configuration for the game’s various blocks, grabs and attacks. Zeno Clash also features some ranged combat, but ammo is limited and clip sizes are small, meaning you’ll likely be saving those shots for special occasions, making each one count and to assist with this, the on-screen interface has been redone as well, now showing quest items, ammo and more.

It’s not all simply streamlining the PC experience to the home console, however, as the Ultimate Edition has received everything from new weapons and attacks to tweaks on of the game’s level structure and balance. They even went so far as to re-record the dialog for Deadra, the female companion of main character Ghat, with a new voice actress based on fan feedback that something felt a bit off with the original version.

The Tower and Pit challenge maps, which were added to the PC version as post-release content, see one of the game’s biggest additions in the form of both local split-screen and online co-op. Now you can cave in the faces of assorted grotesqueries and work your way up the leaderboards with a buddy in tow! Atlus stated that some of the Ultimate Edition’s changes may find their way back to the PC version in the future (although this was said to be unlikely with the new co-op challenge mode), but for now these are all Xbox Live Arcade exclusives. There were also some additional new features teased that we didn’t actually get a chance to check out during the demo, much to our disappointment.

Release Date:

Atlus Inc was able to nail down a release date for the XBLA launch of Zeno Clash, the visually inspired (and spectacularly odd) first-person brawler. The publisher announced this afternoon that the game would hit the service on May 5th, just a week or so out of that "late April" range we heard about prior to this reveal.

Price:

http://www.vg247.com/2010/04/29/zeno-clash-ultimate-edition-to-cost-1200-ms-points/

Zeno Clash: Ultimate Edition to cost 1200 MS Points

Zeno Clash: Ultimate Edition is nearly upon us. With a newly announced release date, the lauch pad is nearly clear for take-off. Except for one thing: the game’s price.

We asked Atlus about that little detail, and here’s what the publisher told us.

“It will be 1200 points,” an Atlus rep told VG247.

Short, sweet, and to the point. Are you itching to see strange, new places and punch their inhabitants until they cry “Uncle” in some sort of weird bird language? Then you’ll be paying the piper 1200 MS Points.

So there you go.

I've wanted to play Zeno Clash ever since it came out on PC. Looking forward to dling the XBLA version.

Day whenever-I-can-figure-I-can-download-1.5GB-on-this-25GB-a-month-connection.

I see they've gone for the Portal Still Alive route of making achievements different to that of the original versions so people who bought the original have something to do with this one, but they could have left something cool for the newbs :/

Indeed, looks like you could finish the game without ever getting one single achievement.

If there`s ever been a game that the trial on Live will make me decide it`s that one...it looks so weird and intersting at the same time,i`m not sure what to think about it hehe...

Ditto. How long is this game?
Four hours. But there are challenge rooms and such (that are very difficult). The coop should make those a lot more fun though.

That said, don't expect too much out of this game. It's fun, but it was overhyped and overrated.

What?

Those are the same cheesemints as in the PC version. All they did was take out the easy ones that you'd fulfill just by playing the story. And, for some reason, the melee-only cheesemint.

I mean they added some Pit things because, IIRC, that wasn't even in the PC version.

http://steamcommunity.com/stats/ZenoClash/achievements

EDIT: No, actually, the Pit thing was in the PC version. They just called it Tower Level Negatives. So, yeah, nothing is different. There's just less.

I've been interested in Zeno Clash since I first saw the PC version on The 1UP Show, but I'm pretty disappointed to hear how short it is. I figured a really interesting and tangled story / plot must fit nicely behind the inspired art design.

At this point I'm just going to demo it to start with. If I don't really like the combat I'll just have to pass on it, no sense making the purchase if I hate the melee since it relies on melee arenas for its replayability factor.

That art though... the character models alone make me want to dive into the fiction. Is it at least a satisfying four hours the first time through?

I'll either buy this later tonight or tomorrow.

Love this game on PC. Shame that the laptop I have with me can't play it.

I just played through the trial game. I am pretty much scratching my head. While the combat is fun... its such a unique and strange world that it sort of blows my mind. Demo was fun but it has not sold me on the game.

Played the trial, enjoyed it. Immediately went and bought some points to pay for the whole thing and, all of a sudden, decided that I maybe wouldn't. The trial was fun, the graphics beautiful (decent engine etc, coupled with never-less than interesting art style) and it controlled well enough. I'm just not entirely convinced.

After 25 minutes: i'm stunned. It's unbelievably enjoyable: the world, the characters are so good. Somehow it reminds me of Morrowind, but in a very very twisted way. Bought it instantly, I hope it will manage to be this good up until the credits.

Sidenote: i don't really care about achievements, i only do them when i'm in the mood, and even then only the ones which are enjoyable (for example: no mindless grinding) and not ridicolous, but ZC's achievements are terrible.

this makes absolutely no sense

congratulations

I'm gonna go download the trial and see if I like it. I'm thinking I will, but after thinking about it, I don't know that I want to spare $15 at the moment for just 4 hours of gameplay. Not really into "challenge room" type modes. We'll see how this goes.

Edit: I just found out that I somehow have an extra 400 ms point in my account, so it looks like i'll more than likely get this since I won't have to run out and buy more points :D

Oh. My. God.

Squirrels with parachutes falling down from the head of a dinosaur, with rum barrels on their backs, filled with TNT?

It's SO weird. I think i'm in love.

Thanks for the link -- I was waiting on it to be posted on Major Nelson or the Xbox.com Marketplace. For some reason, they aren't listed yet.

I can't wait to check this out. This game seems like Condemned's gameplay in a Dark Crystal-like world. I've been interested in this game since it was previewed on the PC, but I don't have a good enough PC to run it.

Yeah picked it up.
Totally dig the art. It reminds me of Shadow of the Beast.
Got I assume about half-way through the campaign and did a Zeno Rush/Tower Challenge.

The Tower Challenges are about what you'd expect, different combinations of foes & weapons, health partially restored after completing each floor, pretty cool.

Zeno Rush looks to be particular stages only the player has to get through with the lowest possible time. They're given a hammer that if they hit enemies with it takes seconds off the clock. Not really feeling it at the moment due to said hammer. Seems like the only way I can post some good times is if I repeatedly clobber everyone on the hammer. Granted holding onto the weapon is difficult so I guess it balances out.

The actual combat feels alright. It's kind of limited by the source engine in that it doesn't feel like blows make that much of an impact. Not to mention there's a rather high range for attacks. As in even if it looks like you're far enough away you can still end up taking damage. I dunno maybe it's just a perspective thing. I guess the only way I could really test this is if asked people to punch me in the face and determined the results from that.

The explosions are really annoying because they're tiny but the actual effect is much larger so you can still get knocked around by stuff that looks to be out of the way.

Still aside from the annoyances it's pretty good. Certainly nothing like it on XBLA either.

Alright played through the campaign, did all five towers in co-op, and did one pit mission.

Gotta say I really got into it. One of the things I really like is that if one enemy is stunned your next attacks are criticals. That is as long as the enemy is stunned you can do the uppercut or double arm hammer. This is great because you can use it on other enemies that happen to be nearby.

A lot of the game is all about maneuvering to get all of the bad guys where you want them. Sure on coop the depth is lessened since you can double-team dudes but your times won't register on the leaderboards.

Kind of wish there were multiple playable characters though. It seems like outside of the heavies everyone has the same number and types of attacks as the hero and yet, only the hero is playable.

I can not understate how much I love this game.

It's weird but not in a typical hipster douchebag (whatever that actually means) way. It's so cool to actually be experiencing something that actually feels, tonally, totally original in a game.

Bought it this morning and played about an hours worth. It's a fun game and the hand to hand combat seems really satisfying. The art style is both cool and creeps the hell out of me. Is it meant to be some crazy incest world or something?

I only had time to play a bit into the second chapter, but I think i'm going to have a lot of fun with this. Just the art alone leaves a smile on my face the whole time.

Love the feel & variety of the game so far.

The source engine is looking lovely here, such nice colours.

But man the loading is killing me.

Picked it up earlier today. First impressions are good, an amazingly weird and deeply bizarre game. I reckon it will haunt my dreams for many nights to come, should be interesting. :lol

I just did, last night. The first time I've ever beaten a game on the 360 with no GS to show for it. Somehow it seems fitting, though. :lol

Been playing this the past few nights and really enjoying it. I really dig the character designs and their sort of short stories of why they are the way they are. I think I would read a short novella about some of these creatures.

... achievements are strange in this game.

I really enjoyed the game, the world and it's inhabitants in particular. However I thought it to be rather short for the asking price, and the end was really disappointing; I was hoping shit was about to get really crazy when it simply finished predictably.

You're right

It's so cliche when games end with
the discovery that your giant bird hermaphrodite parent was really just a crazy person stealing babies and replacing them with pigs.
:D

I'm not going to unspoil that, but I take it that the ending is NOT cliche? :)

You're saying it isn't obvious that the giant bird-man feeding babies from a jug stole them when you see the mother who's child was a piglet? Also like I said, I felt it ended early as well, they could of done so much more when the all-knowing gimp who was sealed away for epochs returned to the only known 'civilised' place in the world. Instead we just get a repeat of an earlier boss fight with minions thrown in. It was a mundane end to an otherwise extraordinary game.
