I really really really like Satoshi Kon and everything he's done (Paprika, Paranoia Agent, etc) and I'm looking for similiar shows/movies

Ive seen and really liked:
Everything Miyazaki and Satoshi Kon
Gurren Lagaan
Death Note
Tekkonkinkreet
Steamboy
Akira
Animatrix

Im looking for a short series or films that are kind of like these, visually interesting or unique, great animation, and a semi interesting story (I like anime more for the visuals than anything else)

no loli shit or comedies (I dont "get" anime humor), nothing that is hundreds of episodes long, I dont really like mecha or anything DBZish

btw I really like short film collections so if anyone know of any good ones please post

Gankutsuou. NOW. It's a sci fi retelling of The Count of Monte Cristo, but has one of the most unique animation styles in a while. Great show even outside the visuals.

Also try out anime by Yoshitoshi ABe. It's all very good with story and character development. His 4 shows are Lain and Texnolyze, which are darker thrillers. And Haibane Renmei and Neia Under 7, which are a bit more light heated but still have great character development and mystery. All four of these shows are very different from each other but all are great.

Another good one is Kino's Journey, which can probably best be comapred to Gulivers Travels.

Masaaki Yuasa should be a good start for you, since his newest series is airing right now. Visually interesting, interesting story, and interesting characters. That's like triple the interesting.

This is how this topic will go:

1: lots of random recommendations for Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, FLCL, Trigun, and Samurai Champloo along with Baccano.

2: random posters chipping in about the downfall of anime, thanks to 'the moe.'

3: angry anime fans replying with passionate posts about how it's not that moe.

4: the OP disappears because he got his answer.

Ghost in the Shell.

The first movie is great, and both seasons are amazing (only 1 or 2 bad episodes), and the third movie is good after you watch the second season. If you're interested in visuals, you might want to check out the second movie, Innocence as well. Too many quotes in it though, and I just don't think it was very cohesive.

Haha actually I liked the second movie more than the first (blasphemy I know)

The Place Promised in Our Early Days
Tried watching this and got bored about a half hour in

When I said mecha I meant things like Gundam or Macross, I hear Evangelion is good though so I may check it out

Also, try Mononoke:

Beautiful to watch and it's like, stoner supernatural mystery, man.

Anything by Mamoru Hosoda if you want some fantastic anime films. Check out The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Summer Wars.

I was really interested in finding these, I think I like the more life like looking design style (is that even a genre?) found in Kon's films...it makes scenes that are strange and out of of place that much better

Rahxephon is a good show if you liked the growing up themes of Eva.

My recommendations of good anime are:

Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex-Both seasons are some of the best anime out there.
Macross Plus
Giant Robo
Gunbuster
FLCL
Cowboy Bebop
Gurren Lagann
Utena
Nadesico
Escaflowne
Gasaraki
Vottoms
Akira
Princess Mononoke
Berserk

A lot of these are mech shows but they are good beyond the mech fights.

Watch Rahxephon + the movie. There much better than the Eva series.

kara no kyōkai might interest you as well.

7 movies in total all of which have been sub. Not to hard to find...

Not a mecha fan, but RahXephon is criminally underrated. Very beautiful animation-wise and one of my favorite series, and I agree it's better than Evangelion. Surprised me by how much I liked it.

Mecha-aside, I also agree wtih those saying to watch Gankutsuou, really stellar series. Would also recommend Last Exile, slow start imo, but very much worth it. :D

Katsuhiro Otomo's Memories; 3 short animated feature featuring Satoshi Kon's first work as a screenwriter & an Otomo (Akira & Steamboy) animated short.

Something to note if you're going to watch Mononoke. The first three episodes are part of another series called Ayakashi. I'm sure a lot of people don't know about those episodes.

I thought the same thing, but don't let that make you overlook 5cm per second. Amazing visuals without the convoluted sci-fi stuff obscuring the character story. Plus it's presented as a series of connected short films, which you're looking for.

I'm also a big fan of Yoshitoshi ABe. The series he's worked on didn't have the biggest budget to work from, but his character designs are so good that it doesn't matter. I adore both Haibane Renmei and NieA_7 for their lighthearted nature yet their genuine, relatable characters.

I thought it was episode three through five, when he's on the boat trip, that connects to Ayakashi--the Bakeneko arc.

Is that so. I just assumed they were the first episodes because they would have aired first, though it doesn't really matter what order you watch them in.

Masaki Yuasa's work (Kaiba, Kemonozume, Mind Game). Mind Game especially, since it's probably the best anime film since Spirited Away.
Haibane Renmei is a really beautiful slice of life series, even though it kind of runs out of steam at the very end.
Texhnolyze is challenging, but the payoff is very worth it.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is easy to love.
Mononoke is awesome.
My favourite show is Evangelion, and if you like psychological shows and Kon's work, you'll probably really like it. Don't be put off by the mecha, since that's not what the show is really about. Also, don't listen to people who tell you to watch Rahxephon instead. Evangelion is MUCH more interesting, but even if you disagree with that you should see Eva first.

Yes, yes, yes!

Edit: I also recommend Kaiba and Evangelion.

Want a good short animu film watch - Kafkas a country doctor. It's very surreal, and one of the best kafka adaptations i've seen

Aside from that i'd recommend (based on what you like) - crest of the stars / seikai series, 12 kingdoms, mushishi, kemonozume. (i still need to watch all of kaiba and mind game!), haibane renmei, kinos journey, GITS SAC 1 & 2, serai no moribto.
