Me and my friend are looking for an anime series to get into this summer, since we should have a lot of free time. Here's a list of series we both liked, hoping for something around this level of quality:

Berserk
Monster
Honey & Clover
Cowboy Bebop
Hajime no Ippo
Ghibli movies (since I'm curious about Future Boy Conan/Anne of Green Gables)

Kind of looking into watching Here is Greenwood, Trigun, Planetes, Gankutsuou, and whatever is highly recommended in this thread.

Since you have a lot of free time why don't you spend that free time watching 110 episodes of the greatest animu ever made - legend of galactic heroes? :D

K-On! is very good. I would say the greatest thing ever.

Try Samurai Champloo, you'll like it.

I love it, friend doesn't. Friend loves Naruto (his favorite series), Nodame Cantabile. I haven't really watched Naruto, and thought Nodame was ok. Here's a short hate list from him:

Bleach
Inuyasha
Wolf's Rain
One Piece
Baccano (I'm interested in this though, lot of praise for it.)

If you are newer to anime, but open minded watch FLCL. It's an absolute must for anyone who has watched anime and it's definitely one that fits best for a summer watch.

Also, make Cowboy Bebop one of your very last anime on the list.

Fake edit:
If you are watching Hajime no ippo stick with the the first part, not the new one that came out. Planetes is also an awesome anime that is a bit more adult in it's presentation. A great way to get some short stuff in would be the Ghibli collection and any movies GAF recommends here.

He hates Wolf's Rain twice?!

What a monster.

Wolf's Rain is on my shit list because of those 4 recap episodes. I mean seriously, does a 26 episode series need 4 recap episodes that are almost entirely composed of old footage from previous episodes in the series...and then to have them all in a row. Wow, talk about destroying the pacing of series. Ok, I'm done. Cool concept though.

Planetes is fantastic but I'm not entirely sure it's what you're both looking for. I've got a non-anime fan friend who dug it too, though.

Umm, how about Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex?

Its time to get new friends.

Durarara (currently airing)

ensemble cast, pretty interesting plot, modern setting

edit: actually if your friend hated Baccano, dont bother

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Clannad

yeah, they are basically opposites in every way but both are awesome.

Edit: oh fuck i almost forgot. Kaiji is really great.

Count of Monte Cristo just became available on Netflix Watch Instantly.
It's been there for at least a month now.

The first season of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is also on netflix.

I will reiterate some of the series that are worth checking out, they are:

Samurai Champloo
FLCL
Gurren Lagann
Beck
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

All great series. If you give us more examples, it will make recommending titles easier. Enjoy!

Definite respect points gained from that.
Awesome series though I never finished it. Since this summer stuff sucks I may give it a shot.

Add me to the FLCL hater club also.

This summer season is a good time to check out the backlog- lots of good series mentioned.
Be easier if you told us what you liked?

Clannad is pretty good and K-On! is the best anime of all time.

Also Toradora.
What.
Toradora is Toradorable though.

I'll just list a few:
Kaiji
Akagi
Darker than Black S1
Summer Wars
Full Metal Panic! all of it.
Mnemosyne if your okay with mutilation.
Hanamaru Kindergarten

I never watched Toradora on the first run. I'll give a shot when the commercial release comes out.

Too many other shows I was watching (One Outs and Ippo were among them)

If you haven't watched Cowboy Bebop, I would definitely recommend that. It's by far the best dub I've seen.

This thread made me go find out what Clannad was (I love K-on! [aka the greatest show ever created] even though I generally hate anime), and upon seeing how far apart the characters eyes are from each other, I nearly threw my computer out the window.

+1 for K-on! though

I don't see how you can generally hate Anime when K-On is so derivative of many shows produced recently.

Because anime is about the animation's drawn style rite?

You have Gankutsuou listed already, it seems. Good man.

Kaiba is something you may want to look into. Only about a dozen episodes. Its art-style is made to mimic '50s-era anime. The story, however, is quite adult and philosophical.

And here's something even more obscure but you should definitely check out: Moyashimon. It's about these guys from sake-brewing families who go to agricultural college in Tokyo, and all sorts of awesome and crazy shit ensues. Oh, and the main character can communicate with bacteria. Trust me; it's totally awesome and deserves way more attention (and a follow-up season!). It's only about a dozen episodes, as well. Also, if you're a Giant Bomb fan, that exploding Scandinavian fish-can thing that they're always talking about in the podcast features prominently in the series. Those things are scary, man. The show's also very educational, too (teaches you how to make bootleg-ass booze out of your own saliva!).

What is everyone's deal with FLCL? It seriously wasn't that great.
if you look at it for its zany action then yeah it won't be that great. If you look deeper its pretty amazing. But you like k-on so I dunno what to tell you.

I'd recommend darker than black but I'm only on the second dvd in the set and so far it's been pretty good.
