Recommend Me Some Sci Fi Novel Series GAF

Well going on a trip and looking at trying some new series out. The amount of sci fi out there is pretty vast so perhaps gaf can help me narrow things down.

Looking at stuff like the Starfist series though not sure on it as it seems to get mixed reviews. Also considering Honor Harrington stuff. Don't mind single novel stuff either though kind of prefer series that really develop characters. Is Ender's game worth the time investment? What else is good and out there.

For some reference, some stuff I have enjoyed greatly or movie/tv stuff

-Babylon 5 : Greatest sci fi series ever for me
-Star Wars : Just great fun pulpy universe with a mix of sci fi and fantasy
-Battlestar Galactica : Military sci fi with lot of character drama
-Starship Troopers : Both the novel and movie were fun

And perhaps anyone know anything that perhaps mixes military sci fi with horror aspects, or cthulhuesque mythos?

We seem to have this thread every couple of weeks. A short search will find one filled with suggestions.

The Thrawn Trilogy

Outbound Flight

those are Star Wars EU novels

read them NOW

I really enjoyed Ender's Game and the sequels, others might tell you to avoid the sequels but I think Speaker for the Dead is brilliant and shouldn't be missed.

Never actually seen it

I watched it while I was growing up, therefore my opinion on the matter is probably clouded with age. It may well be terrible, but when I watched it I thought it was good.

I didn't even know it was a series till looking it up on Amazon, only ever hear of people talking about the first novel.

Then pick up the rest of the series. Ghost of Onyx is worth reading.

Read em all pretty much except for Halo Evolutions so far.

Heh, should have made note that I've read almost all the EU novels as well.

FOUNDATION, the whole thing. Start with the trilogy, then move onto the Robot series, then read the rest (it's a big universe).

The ENDER series. Speaker for the Dead, in some ways, is even better than the first book. All of them are good though, save Shadow Puppets, which drags.

The HYPERION quartet is great too.

Yeah, I liked the Bean books on the whole, but Shadow Puppets did seem a bit tedious. Reading Altered Carbon right now and it seems like a pretty intrigueing take on the concept of the intersection of humanity and computers told as a good detective story.

As for anyone looking for good modern fantasy, I highly recommend the Dresden Files. I just spent the last two months reading the eleven books available in paperback, and I am just as eager to find out what happens in the next book as I was after the first.
