Starcraft 2 sells over a million copies on launch day...

Alice O'Connor said:
StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty sold over one million copies on its launch day last week, developer Blizzard boasted today, declaring it the "biggest PC game launch of the year."

Passing the million mark made SC2 "the best-selling PC game of 2010 within its first 24 hours of availability," says Blizzard. Going on to sell over 1.5 million units total within the first 48 hours apparently broke "the record for fastest-selling strategy game of all time."

"We launched StarCraft II in 11 different languages and on 5 different continents because we wanted to make sure as many players as possible were able to log on and play on day one," said Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime. "We're pleased that so many people around the world have already picked up a copy of the game, and we look forward to welcoming even more players to Battle.net in the weeks and months ahead."

"StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is officially GameStop's fastest-selling PC game since Blizzard launched World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King in 2008," the retailer's senior VP of merchandising, Bob McKenzie, added in the announcement.

Unsurprisingly, industry analysts speculate that StarCraft II will sell by the bucketload. Several are predicting sales figures pushing six million units by the end of 2010. In the UK, the real-time strategy sequel has already surpassed the original's lifetime sales.

Good news but I don't think it's surprising though.

Not really surprising, Let's see if Blizzard can out do themselves with Cataclysm sales, and then further out do themselves with Diablo 3.

Wow

Sounds about right. Does NPD track PC games? It would be interesting to finally see a PC game on there.

I'm also wondering how Civilization 5 will sell later this year. I'm sure it won't be nearly as much as SCII, but it should be up there, right?

Actually 6 million units in 5 months strikes me as a very conservative guess for a game that sold 1.5 million in 48 hours. I'm sure the game will do much better then that.

Insert gloriouspcmasterrace here.

I wonder if the game will manage to have the same type of community the first one did. I hope so :) now come Diablo III!

This. I hope we get it before the next SC2 expansion.

I expect more actually, 10m. high profile console games sell 5m over couple of months and they have no legs, Blizzard games have legs.
High profile console games usually sell 90+% of their copies at full price which isn't really true for most PC games.

One of the notable exceptions being Blizzard games, which maintain a high price for much longer.

I dont get it, companies like Relic have been doing more inventive stuff with RTS but all Blizz had to do was update Starcraft's visual and interface.

:lol :lol , good luck waiting for a price drop for SCII, not gonna happen anytime soon.
Also there is no used copies.

Did you actually played Starcraft II? Sure, it feels like Starcraft, it wouldn't be Starcraft II otherwise, but they did much more than simply improving graphics and interface. =/

Also, that's the power of Blizzard's games. Just like Nintendo's games, all their series are fucking popular(and great).

Yeah, keep telling yourself that...

Relic games are very unpolished and mostly broken when it comes to serious competitive games.
SCII feels completely fresh to me, this is coming from someone who played the first game for 4-5 years.

Inventive isn't always better. I love what they did with DoW, but Starcraft is going to be king for awhile.

Although I'm not that big of a starcraft fan, i still bought sc2 just because I know there will be a big playerbase 5 years from now.

That and all the custom maps. Congrats blizzard. hurry up and finish diablo3.

Yes, Blizzard games always have a high price on them. I think the Diablo II battle chest collection is still like 40 to 50 bucks o_o which is insane, because the game is so old at this point!

Diablo 3 with achievements like StarCraft 2 has will be the true death of PC gaming.

It is called cross marketing. Blizzard has millions of WoW zealots who they can push SC2 on, plus the name recognition of the original game which was played by millions of people back when online multiplayer was a twinkle in console gamer's eyes.

And as much as I love CoH's single player, SC2 has the superior multiplayer by far.

They rebalanced it and improved multiplayer but in it's core its still Starcraft

It was this way with Starcraft 1 as well. Total Annihilation blew it away, but everyone loved the Starcraft. I think the fact that they have a really balanced multiplayer tends to trump anything single player might do. SC2 is fantastic, but I do think that the DoW games are much more fun and have more options. But their multi has always lacked. Which is fine, I prefer single player regardless.

SC2 has the great single player as well. The varying gameplay and challenges in the missions have been amazing (and I'm only four in), CoH couldn't even keep me interested that long, though one of these days I mean to give it another shot.

Yeah, i'm pretty sure blizzard is the only company who would get away releasing this very classic rts and selling a metric ton of copies. If the exactly same game was released by another company, nobody would probably give a shit.

I love SC 2, but in some way, i think i respect Relic more for what they are doing.. if that makes any sense. They deserve more success than they have got.

I'm also talking about the campaign, which is very different from the ones of Starcraft & Brood War.

And that is certainly not a bad thing, concept of starcraft is so good it doesn't need major overhauls.

Yup, many new unit types and rebalanced units changed it up quite a bit, imo

And SC1 BW SP had a cliffhanger which made the 12 year wait more painful.

That's just it, other people come up with new ideas and struggle to get out of a niche market, then comes blizz bursting through the door "check it out we got base building" and is gonna sell more than all relic, ea or gas powered games combined
at this rate blizz could make diablo 3 a roguelike and it would still sell like hot cakes (I would actually buy a high budget roguelike though)

Can't say I'm surprised.

As for that Korean number, a lot of people there go to Internet rooms...kinda like Internet cafes, but not really, to play SC2 without actually having to buy a copy.
