Sons of Anarchy is back for Season 3 starting Tuesday, September 7th at 10pm on FX. A lot of GAF hasn't picked up on this show yet, but it's an underwatched gem that deserves more attention. Created by Kurt Sutter (The Shield), the show has been compared to The Shield and The Sopranos, as well as being described as "Hamlet on a Harley." Season 3 continues the story of SAMCRO as Jax and the gang head over to Ireland searching for Abel. With high calibre acting, dark humor, sex, violence, and profanity, this is tv for adults.

Summary
FX's original series, Sons of Anarchy, is an adrenalized drama with darkly comedic undertones that explores a notorious outlaw motorcycle club's (MC) desire to protect its livelihood while ensuring that their simple, sheltered town of Charming, California remains exactly that, Charming. The MC must confront threats from drug dealers, corporate developers, and overzealous law officers. Behind the MC's familial lifestyle and legally thriving automotive shop is a ruthless and illegally thriving arms business. The seduction of money, power, and blood.

Jackson 'Jax' Teller (Charlie Hunnam) is the MC's vice-president, whose loyalty to the club is tested by his growing apprehension for its lawlessness; Gemma Teller Morrow (Katey Sagal) is Jax's force-of-nature mother; and Clarence 'Clay' Morrow (Ron Perlman) is Jax's stepfather and MC president. The triangle of Mother, Son, and Stepfather will ultimately reveal the dark secrets in this family's past and the lengths they will go to protect their sins.

According to series creator Kurt Sutter, season three will deal with
SAMCRO's roots. The third season is slated to premiere in September 2010. Additionally, Sutter wants to "take [the Sons] into a world that is outside their own, where they don't have control, where they are subject to other people's laws and beliefs and parameters, Where they aren't quite the big fish in the small pond."

Award-winning actor Hal Holbrook has officially signed on for a four-episode arc, in which he will portray
Katey Sagal's character's father
, making him the first official guest star of the third season. Stephen King has officially landed a role on Season 3. Taryn Manning will appear in at least three episodes of third season as Cherry. Kenny Johnson (Lem), Paula Malcomson (Trixie from Deadwood), and Robin Weigert (Calamity Jane) will also feature in S3. As of July 2010 it has been announced that several scenes, relating to an arc which will feature in season three, were being shot on location in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

- Kurt Sutter previews S3 in an interview with Sepinwall
The new season of "Sons of Anarchy" starts on Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 10 p.m. on FX. And since the drama about an outlaw motorcycle club is one of the best on television, I made sure to spend some time talking with the show's creator, Kurt Sutter, after the "Sons" panel at the Television Critics Association press tour a few weeks back. I've seen the first four episode of "Sons" season three, and they're strong. (I'll have a longer review the day of the premiere.)

Also, the Season 2 DVD and BRD are out today.

I can't wait for this.

The fact the the final two episodes of Louie season one air after the premiere is just icing on the cake.

I can't wait for this. SOA is one of my favorites shows and the ending for last season was just so damn brutal and sad. Really interested to see how things develop this season.

I just recently watched Seasons 1 and 2 for the first time, easily one of the best shows on television. Can't wait.

The only bad thing about remaking Hamlet is that you know it isn't going to end well - great show though, glad its back.

Uh that's just a comparison. It's not hamlet nor should it be.

The wait has been agonizing, I am excited. Both Sunny and Sons coming back right around the same time. September TV will be awesome.

Wow, it's that time already? I can count on one hand the shows that have my ass sitting in front of the tv and this is definitely one of them. Last season was so good, can't wait to see what they have in store for this one.

It's pretty fucking close.

Obviously not note for note, but many of the same plot elements are represented. Controlling parents with G/C names, dead father speaking to him through a book, etc.

Maybe it's just me, but I barely see the correlation and it's only there if you want to see it. Either way it's an awesome show and I'll catch it on the weekends as usual; sans-commercials.

Looking forward to see how they deal with Northern Ireland. Glad that its going to be a multi episode arc as well rather than some one-off just for the sake of it.

Hopefully the show can still deliver, didn't like the S2 ending with the whole baby thing, seemed hilariously random.

last season was awesome but for some reason i thought Half sac getting killed and the dude stealing the baby was way too over the top.

Just bought the first two seasons on bluray, never watched before but ive heard really good things and i like rescue me. should hopefully be able to get through them in time for the season 3 premiere :D

From Kurt Sutter's blog:
SEASON 3 PREMIER AND OTHER THINGS

I know for most of you it feels like an eternity since you last saw the boys of Samcro, but for me it's been a spastic blink since we premiered season two. I can't believe we are here again. No wonder I'm aging so quickly. As I slide closer to the half-century mark, I often wonder, "Am I really this old? I was like 32 a year and a half ago. What the fuck happened?" I know this has nothing to do with this post, but I just caught a glimpse of myself in my window and saw my father. That's a whole different couch visit.

Anyway...

As I said in a recent post, if the season three premier retains all the viewers we picked up between seasons one and two, I will be very pleased. I'm very excited about this season of Sons. It will be a different viewing experience for fans and I hope a very satisfying one. Creatively, I feel sometimes shows fall into a trap in season three. Writers and producers often figure out what works in season one, expand on that in season two, then try to do it again in season three. Unless you're working from source material like True Blood (whose third season was fucking awesome), repeating what works, ultimately generates storylines that feel derivative and familiar. It would be very easy for me to repeat what worked in season two -- create some internal beef that provided intensity and tension within the club (Jax and Clay), bring in another big nemesis (Zobelle), throw those two conflicts at each other (Gemma's rape) and watch the blood flow. Yes, I'm sure it would be okay and people would like it. But ultimately, I would be cheating my own creative process and your dedication as well. I've learned that devoted fans are very sophisticated viewers. They know when they are being fed leftovers. Yeah, they may eat them for awhile, but eventually, they'll get bored and leave to feed on something more tasty.

As an artist, I try to stay tasty. I constantly challenge my process. To do that, you must take risks. You must be willing to move away from anything that feels like formula. That approach is in complete contrast to the way many networks think. They want familiar, they want you to repeat what worked. The adage, if it ain't broke, why fix it, fuels the network development process. Unfortunately that philosophy is creative death and counterintuitive to generating compelling television. My favorite shows never felt derivative. The Sopranos, The Wire, Homicide, Hill Street Blues; those shows took huge risks. Some worked, some didn't, but they all expanded the scope of the show and in the long run made them better. That's my hope for Sons -- to continue to push the boundaries of the narrative, the absurdity of the world and the emotionality of the characters. I have no delusions that SOA will ever fall into the category of the above mentioned dramas, I only hope that the series never be called, "lazy".

So on this season of Sons of Anarchy, we expand beyond the emotional/geographical boundaries of Charming and our primary beefs, to divulge deeper mythological conflicts. The mythology revealed this season will serve as gasoline for the familial fires that will ultimately set our antiheroes ablaze. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I've enjoyed making it.

Please spread the word and join us on September 7th. As always, I deeply appreciate all your support.

- Why you should be watching ‘Sons of Anarchy’
Trying to sum up the first two seasons in one simple review is both impossible and unfair. What I will say is that if you’re not squeamish, and cherish shows that are above all about character, than this show is for you. When it tries to function as a tightly-plotted show that shows the club under fire from rival gangs (foreign and domestic) as well as the local/federal law enforcement, the show sometimes paints its protagonists into impossible corners only to let them out and almost immediately to shove them into another corner. These plots are by and large great, but a distant second to the personal drama it tells about people in situations foreign to our own but going through the types of problems that are all too familiar.

- Sepinwall's review *some spoilers*
But the darker and more complicated life gets for the Sons, the better the TV show tends to be. And based on the four episodes I’ve seen, “Sons” is still at the incredible level it achieved a year ago, when it became one of the best dramas on television. (The only others that are in the discussion with it for the top spot are “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad.”)

Why do some shows get no love on GAf. This and Leverage is crazy how underrated they are. Not saying Leverage is in the same league as SoA, but it is better then half the crap on tv. Even though I admit it is getting predictable.

Wooooo! I had totally forgotten that it'd be airing this fall, now I'm so psyched I have to go jogging or something. :lol

I really hope they don't just forget about Zobell... They've gotta be getting back to him in the future, right? The one thing that bothered me about last season is how they just left him there. They had him so cornered and just left? Old discussion, I know, but that's still annoying me...

Nah I could totally see (slight spoiler)
Family being more important

Last season was amazing but completely fell apart at the end. I didn't like the whole "FISTFIGHT NO GUNS LOL" thing, the way Zoebell just got away, the stealing of the baby, etc.
