Sonic being too cool for Mario/Nintendo fans was the whole point, and it worked. You saw his games with faster speed and better graphics (before SMW) and were amazed, his attitude was awesome in that embarrassing early-90s way, and his cartoon(s) were way better than Mario's.

Now they've turned him into a vehicle for 13 year olds, anime fans, Nintendorks, and furry fantasies.

I've always been on Mario's side in Mario vs Sonic comparisons but they're good for different reasons. It doesn't make sense for them to emulate Mario.
