GFWL Live System Update on Nov 15th

http://forums.gamesforwindows.com/t/15527.aspx

We are pleased to inform the community that along with the launch of the new Games for Windows Marketplace, we will also publish an update to the Games for Windows – LIVE service on Nov 15th. The update contains various bug fixes, including improvements around auto sign-in and protections to help prevent users from activating game keys within non-LIVE supported accounts. Major improvements or new features to the product are outlined below. Users can obtain this update by logging-in to their LIVE account through a Games for Windows – LIVE enabled game and accepting the system update or by downloading the update through our website at launch.

· Voice Codec Upgrade

o New higher quality voice codec used for in-game chat, private chat, and voice messages to align with the Xbox 360

o All GFWL enabled games will get this upgrade and use the new codec including PC->PC in-game chat, messages, and private chat

o Known Issue: Because previously released Xbox 360 games do not use the new codec automatically, in-game chat with previously release cross-platform games will not work. Titles affected are Shadowrun, Universe at War, Lost Plant: Colonies Edition, and Blazeblue. GFWL players will hear nothing if Xbox player talks, Xbox players will hear static if PC player talks while in those games. Fixing this issue requires Title Updates for the Xbox 360 versions of the affected titles. Publishers can choose to issue these at their discretion.

· Windows Live ID Upgrade

o Updated version of Windows LIVE ID that handles user credentials during logon. The new system uses the Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant that is shared by Messenger and other WLID enabled applications

o The Windows LIVE ID Sign-in Assistant is now required and is installed as part of the update

o Known Issue: During the update the new Sign-in Assistant will be installed on the user’s computer. This may result in a reboot if the service is not previously installed. In some cases this could also result in two notices for a System update when updating from in-game (1st time it installs the required Sign-in Assistant, 2nd time it will install the actual update).

· Per-Title 5x5 LIVE Access keys

o Per-Title 5x5 LIVE Access keys are tied to a specific game, but not a specific PC or LIVE Account. Prevents keys from being shared between GFWL titles but allows more than one Gamertag to play the game on your PC

o New GFWL Enabled Games will either use Per-Title 5x5 or SSA (Server Side Activation) for LIVE Access Keys as decided by the game’s publisher. Previously released GFWL titles and keys will still function as they currently do.

o Activation limits for Per-Title 5x5 keys are the same as previous non-SSA GFWL titles.

Ok, now that is good. That is one thing people complain about with Steam. Everything is locked to your Steam ID and understandably so. This is pretty good.

Uh-oh. Blazblue (but it's CT... ugh...) and Lost Planet I was thinking of getting on PC to play online against 360 players. But if the voice chat for them isn't patched, what is the point of buying them now?

They should just degrade the voice quality for these cross-platform titles if they're before this "update" and if the publisher updates the 360 codec, they update the codec for that PC title as well.

MS has to be stupid when it comes to backwards compatibility on things, I swear. :/

Nobody talks online, it's cool.

*shrug* I just don't see why they have to break backwards compatibility with older titles that are cross-platform just because they're updating the codec to meet the new 360 one. The new 360 codec didn't break those titles voice-chat, so why does the PC automatically do it?

MS is so stupid. :/

They misspelled "Blazeblue"

And wouldn't it be easier to just use the old Codec with those 4 games?

Wow so they are effectively killing off shadowrun with this?

Lots of PC players on there who talk. The fuck MS?

Edit: Im just assuming none of those titles will be updated. Essentially screwing online over.

This will be really nice to have. Too bad they're not upgrading old titles though.

Cross-codec chat is hard.

I really kind of despise GFWL. Not so much because of what it is now but because of Microsoft's business practices with the 360. I don't believe that they are good for the industry in the long run and this codec thing is just the latest example.

:lol :lol Apparently, so.

Not that it applies to me, but it's just so mind boggling how they can fuck that up when the 360 update didn't. X-box department better platform providers, confirmed?

If you ask Capcom and Aksys/Arc System really nicely, they may update LP1:CE and BB:CT PC for you. But Shadowrun is fucked now that FASA is gone unless MS (the publisher) do it their damn selves.

I just re-bought shadowrun recently too. I cant be the only person who is saddened by the possibility of going online to play it and just have loud noises coming through the speakers all the time :(

Hey can i get a rez!? *LOUD NOISES* Thanks! *LOUD NOISES*

Fuck, this shit breaks my smb network shares. No more GFWL games for me then.

I don't play any of the cross platform games but I am surprised the improved codec has resulted in such problems. Must be a kick in the balls to the communities involved.

Was I the only one to notice they misspelled "BlazBlue"?
I called the game "blaz blue" as in rhyming with "raz" and the nerd at the game store corrected me and said "it's pronounced Blaze blue"

I used to do that same thing. I can understand why they misspelled it.

I thought this update broke all chance of that (since it's updating the codec)
I think those only affect in-game codecs. The private chat (ie PC to Xbox 1-to-1 chat) should still work?

No. They are killing chat between the PC and the 360. However, the chat between PC players still works, as the chat between 360 players still works. I don't see how this affects Shadowrun so much if the 360 players prefer to play among themselves since PC players always destroy them.

Looks like me joining my friends party chat while I'm playing Dawn of War is never going to happen.

PC players have no choice but to play with 360 players. There are no PC servers. So it effectively kills the game for us since we can't communicate.

It's a mild improvement but more still needs to happen, sounds good about live keys if i'm understanding it right, you can with future titles now register the key with a few gamertags as long as they are played on the same computer?

Can't you just use Vent/Teamspeak/SKype/etc ?

Not ideal of course, but the alternative was no previous games get the upgrade so its a hard call to make. The Xbox chose one direction, the PC the other, I'm not sure which is best, though they probably should have been coordinated. Its only really Shadowrun where its going to make a big difference and since that's a MGS title maybe a title update is already in the works. I'll let my contact know about the concern though.

I'm going to ask for clarification on this, I should have a definitive answer for you by the end of next week. I agree, its a little unclear.

.

The issue is that the chances of another PC player being in the game with you are about 0. So you're playing with a team of 360 players. And if you can't talk in Shadowrun, you might as well not be playing. It's a very team orientated type of game.

There's a solid quick positioning and text prompt system, which is used extensively, but still most players now are pretty high level and to coordinate properly requires communication.

Like I said before, they've effectively fucked PC Shadowrun players. Proper fucked.

Fuck you MS.

Party chat should use the new codec on the 360 just as it does on the PC. Its the ingame chat in older Xbox titles which are affected.

Does anyone even play Shadowrun any more? There are far better FPS games on both PC and 360.

Yes, and I wouldn't say far better. Shadowrun is unique. There just aren't any other games that get the magic/tech/weapon balance that Shadowrun has.

Shadowrun is still one of my favorite online FPSs. Very unique and strategic. I guess you can knock off that strategic part when the codec arrives, though.

Also, it helps prevent people from being able to go online and earn achievements with pirated versions of GFWL games. What an awesome fix. Combat piracy and actually improve the user experience in the process? Microsoft's idea?

Is this real life?
