WP7 Release Trailer!
ilomilo-WP7.jpg

For those that don't know ilomilo is an XBLA title coming to the 360 that also got made for MS new W7P. It was announced as an AT&T exclusive ( a weird announcement) and for now it's free. It's also one of the full XBLA titles with all the hooks and features that XBLA brings. It's this cute little puzzle/platformer from Southend Interactive in conjunction with MS Studios to make it a premier WP7 title.

Wow as someone who's never been that into phone gaming wow this was sort of a watershed moment for me. First off the game looks fuck'n GORGEOUS. Shit is fully 3d with a great art style that really shines through coupled with extremely catchy music. Oh yeah, and the game runs at least on my phone flawlessly. I haven't seen or experienced any slow down yet. Check out some of the screens!

Now I'm personally running this on the Samsung Focus which has the same screen as the Samsung Galaxy S line with is Samsungs "Super" AMOLED screen. Graphics just frick'n pop on this damn screen. Plus since the platform is new and MS has certain specs like all games it's running in native 800x480 which is awesome. Compared to all my time spent with my DS (as well as some PSP time and some iphone time on the older screens) it looks ridiculously good. It's also fully 3d. You can swipe left or right to change the perspective around to the 4 faces of the characters. Oh yeah and the game sound great too. Granted I haven't tried my grados or anything yet, but it sounded fantastic with the stock earbuds that came with the phone. Sound track is also very catchy ( everything reminds me of LBP in a way).

The key here is the fact that it's an XBLA game so it has all of the official XBLA hooks. I loaded the game up the XBL game app and load times were fast. Then you get the normal XBLA like menu setup. I swear it was just like playing an XBLA game such as Geometry Wars 2 or Shadow Complex. That also means you get XBLA leader boards as well as achievements.

Fuck I'm not even a gamerscore whore, but after I beat the intro level I got a little notification at the top of my phone like I would for a text. Instead of a text though it was like here's 10G cause you just unlocked an achievement! I was like oh shit this is pimp as hell! lol Couple that with the fact that everything uploads to legit leader boards as well, and I'm like woah now this is cool. When I backed out of the game to the Live App I was like hey w00t my gamerscore just updated while staring at my goofy ass avatar.

It also helped that the gameplay was great. The levels themselves are puzzles, but it's got a progression and unlocks. So it feels like a normal xbla game while allowing you to just try and level then dip out if you have to cause you're just playing on your phone. The only downside the game had was the fact that it IS a battery drainer.

Still it makes me want more high quality XBLA tired games on the phone. I hope MS really tries to leverage this fact. It also makes me thing hey Sony I know your not sure what to do with the PSP2, but after seeing how pimp it is to have my live shit on my phone having my psn shit on my PSP2 would be extremely compelling to me personally. It also makes me think this type of thing is definitely something I'd miss on the 3DS. I wasn't sure if it would be a big deal or not, but I was pretty much like wow.

Now I've played other cell phone stuff before and had fun with stuff like flight control, angry birds, and canabalt. Hell I play the flash version of canabalt on my PC from time to time if I just have to kill a few seconds. Plus admittedly though I helped my mom get an iphone 4 I've yet to play any iOS4 games with game center functionality. This totally felt fuck'n next gen compared to any of the previous gaming stuff I've ever done on a phone before. If MS can give me more of experience that match this sort of quality and functionality you can count me as hooked! :lol :D

Does the Focus have the same horribly oversaturated colors as the Galaxy S?

Never used a Galaxy S, but the Focus is gorgeous and I haven't read a single review that doesn't praise it and it's screen.

I hate you because even if I buy a WP7 I can't get this.

what why not?

It's an AT&T exclusive till the end of the year. It's gonna be available to everyone next year though. So you'll get it eventually but I'll admit it sucks if your not in the US or your on T-Mobile.

It's the exact same screen, but shit doesn't appear to have this issue as much. I'm assuming it's a difference in the OS in terms of WP7 verses Android 2.1. The screen fuck'n is ball'n with the OS especially when seen side by side compared to the HTC phones running WP7 with a regular LCD screen. There's a reason all the reviews said the screen was THE reason to get the Focus if you wanted a WP7 in the US.

Visually the screen fuck'n owns when playing this game. If I can I'll try and take some off screen pics with my camera if people would be interested to see. Beware my picture taking abilities suck hardcore though! :lol

Did you try The Harvest?

I haven't yet only because I've been playing this and Flowerz. I'll probably at least try the demo, but was gonna beat this 1st before I threw down my cash on another game.

Roughly every single game I played at PAX on the WP7 was awful, so it's refreshing to hear that there's some quality coming out.

Please do. I have no clue what all the hype is about.

see, the problem was that for a couple years people kept thinking of phone gaming as “phone” gaming as in Nokia Snake and not what it really was, simply: portable gaming.

get the stigma of the word “phone” out of there and it doesn’t seem so hard to imagine the quality we are seeing on these things.

yes, there are going to be differences in input between phones and dedicated devices like the PSP or DS but the fact the system happens to be a phone does not preclude the system from having some really great games.

I think the big difference was this game and The Harvest were both games that had 1st party ties with MGS. So they got the full XBLA treatment, and the quality bar was raised a little higher on these compared to your average game.

Don't get me wrong I like the free Flowerz game you can download too, but it's fuck'n night and day compared to ilomilo. ilomilo is light years beyond Flowerz.

Hey would you be interested in a short video? I could take a quick video capture of me booting up my phone into the live app, and into the game with my web cam real fast. Then I can just throw it up on youtube!

holy shit this game looks cool, how did I never hear about it?
Because you're among the many that don't visit my site. ;_;

You know you have worked too much when you associate WP7 with Work Package 7...

Game looks cool though. Very LittleBigPlanet style art, but cool concept. I like.

lol, how did they ever come up with those aesthetics?

1) battery is okay... it's not my mom's iphone 4... but it's good for a smart phone (not that I think smart phone battery life is well good LOL :lol )

2) OS is buttery smooth and I think that's because the OS is GPU accelerated which is why MS required a baseline spec.

So wait, a few days in and WP7 is already beating the Android gaming scene? :lol

To be fair MS can pull this off because they already have dedicated people involved in gaming in house unlike Google or Apple. They had all of their PC and Xbox knowledge they could use so it gives them a leg up out of the gate.

To be fair, MS can pull this off b/c the XNA framework can be compiled for windows mobile platforms

That too though I filed that under their PC/Xbox experience along with all of the live stuff. :P

Thanks for the nice comments on the video. I was worried it would be to shitty for people to care.

Played some during half time of the NFL game. I'm still amazed everytime I fire it up and just how good it looks and sounds. Gosh damn I can't figure out this fuck'n bonus level though.

I mean FFS I had them finally on the same plane a square away from each other with just a square of nothingness in between. OOOOh so close. Yet not. :lol

Funny, I just downloaded this trailer from the marketplace the other day and was thinking it looked pretty interesting. It's already out? When is the XBLA release?

I think it's coming later this month. I haven't downloaded the 360 demo yet, but I bet the demo would tell me.

The game looks great. I've had a Droid X for a couple months now and while there are some pretty 3D games available I just can't get over the lack of dedicated controls for gaming. I hate using onscreen d-pads and buttons, or tilting to steer, so many "normal" types of games are out. There are certain genres that work well with touchscreen controls, and those games are fun for a while, but I find myself craving platformers and the like, so I guess I will still be carrying a DS or PSP around when I go places where they might be handy.

I cannot wait to see how my XNA code works on one of these. Very excited.

This game runs EXTREMELY well, but I wonder how much that is because MGS made sure to help Southend optimize their XDA code to have a big game at launch.

As I said earlier I think later this month, but it's not set in store. It's one of those MS things. Southend and crew confirmed at the end of October though that it's for sure still coming and well it obviously is cause the WP7 game pimp's out a link to download the demo early.

Oh yeah I finally beat the 1st bonus level after the game. Maybe the big by my falcons help put me over the top. Also beating the bonus level scored meanother achievement!
