I came up with this idea as to formally announce and present to other casual hip-hop albums a list of albums that best represent the year's best. If you pay attention to all of the releases including those that were freely distributed then going through the year then sorting through such a list would present a daunting task.

****Voting System****

Point System - *Voters are awarded a total of 20 points maximum to distribute. They can give a maximum of 3 points to any singular album with a minimum of one, obviously. Voters can either distribute their twenty points across a selection of ten albums or if they cannot think of ten albums they can choose five, but will only be granted ten points to distribute.

Example
(MY VOTE)
Kanye West/MBDF - 2
Versis iLLCANDESCENT- 2
Roc Marciano/Marcberg - 2
Skyzoo & Illmind/Live from the Tape Deck - 2
Strong Arm Steady/In Search of Stoney Jackson 2
Kno/Death Is Silent - 2
Add-2/Tale of Two's City Vol.4 - 2
Deacon the Villain & Sheisty Khrist - 3
Apollo Brown/The Reset - 2
Big K.R.I.T/Wuz Here- 1

(Correct Random Short List Example)
Nicki Minaj/Pink Friday - 3
B.O.B/The Adventures of Bobby Ray - 3
Gucci Mane/The Appeal Georgia's Most Wanted - 2
Lil Wayne/I Am Not a Human Being - 1
Kanye West/MBDF - 1

NEW RULE CLARIFICATION - CHOOSE EITHER FIVE (SHORT LIST) OR TEN (LONG LIST)

WHY? - To encourage you to list ten, and increase variety

Rules - Carefully examine the point system, if you don't your vote will not be counted and you might as well not bother posting. Also, albums must be from the hip-hop/rap genre and have been released in 2010.

Counting- If it's not too strenuous every single album voted in will make its way into the OP. However, the top 25 will be greatly distinguished from the rest.

******VOTING ENDS MONDAY, JANUARY 3RD*****

Edit: Write-Ups Are Encouraged

I thought Shinobi was gonna do this and we were gonna do write ups instead of voting?

And come on man, you could at least host the images elsewhere!

Reply #1 - Write-Ups are nice, but I think this would make it easier to present to the newbs

Reply #2 - I think you're underestimating how long that would take

Kanye West- MBDTF: 3
Big Boi-SLL:The Son of Chico Dusty: 2
Freeway/Jake One-Stimulus Package:2
Curren$y- Pilot Talk: 2
Dessa- A Badly Broken Code: 2
Kno- Death is Silent: 2
Kid Cudi-MOTM 2: 2
Marco Polo and Ruste Juxx- The Exxecution: 2
Statik Selektah- 100 Proof: The Hangover: 2
Eminem- Recovery: 1

My honorable mentions: Rah Digga's Classic, Wu Massacre, Seared Foie Gras, SAS's In Search of Stony Jackson, Shad: TSOL, The Roots How I Got Over, Janelle Monae's Archandroid, and Yelawolf's album... My top ten turned out to be a little bit more mainstream than I expected

Overall, great year for hip hop imho- I'm working on my top 5 album writeups right now

Hell YES
Yeah I didn't realize mixtapes were fair game... I guess J Cole would prob knock Recovery off my list, and I think its def objectively "better" but as a huge Em fan, i really like how Recovery has Em back on track and making more music... It goes on my honorable mention list

Actually, I'm thinking I'm probably gonna do a write up of my 5 fave albums, and my 5 fave mixtapes, so that makes things a lot easier:D

Arright Arright

Kanye West-MBDTF-3
J. Cole- Friday Night Lights-3
Kno- Death is Silent-2
Damien Marley & Nas-Distant Relatives-2
Shad-TSOL-2
Lloyd Banks- Hunger for More 2-2
Curren$y- Pilot Talk 2-2
Big Boi-SLL:TSOCD-2
Eminem- Recovery-1
T.I.- No mercy-1

I'm going to start rehosting all of the images row by row shortly...Give me a little time I gotta grab something to eat.

I don't think Free Agent should count, I was mistaken it's not really supposed to be out :lol

I still have to listen to Chiddy Bang's The Preview so my list could change too...As long as you have your final list in by the 31st you are good.

Kno/Death is Silent - 3
Dessa/A Badly Broken Code - 3
The Roots/How I Got Over - 3
Atmosphere/To All My Friends - 3
Grieves/The Confessions of Mr. Modest - 1

If you choose five albums, you only get ten points man. I know it seems silly, but it would really would fuck up the weight of the point system if it wasn't this way.

I',m in.
I'll also do a write up, but I'll wait a bit, maybe we'll see some more albums.

Oh, and I'll be quoting every list without Teflon Don on it and call it a crappy, wack list made by a man with no taste.

I'll allocate my god damn 20 pts how I feel like thank you.

Freeway & Jake One - The Stimulus Package - 3
Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot The Son Of Chico Dusty - 3
The Roots - How I Got Over - 3
Gorillaz - Plastic Beach - 3
Reflection Eternal - Revolutions Per Minute - 2
Nas & Damian Marley - Distant Relatives - 2
Curren$y - Pilot Talk - 2
Strong Arm Steady - In Search of Stoney Jackson - 2

Dessa - A Badly Broken Code
Label: Doometre
ifa90x.jpg

I've got a crush on this lady. She can sing, she can rap, she can WRITE! I've been looking forward to this one for a couple years when I first heard her Mineshaft EP from a 2 or so years back. Had this entire album on repeat for something close to 3 weeks non stop. Just smooth and buttery. My favorite cut? Matches to Paper Dolls but Poor Atlas, Seamstress and Dixon's Girl (WATCH THIS VIDEO) are always serious contenders. This is what a well balanced independant album sounds like it. It's melodic, great lyrics and absolutely zero fluff/filler. Better yet, it's all coming from the heart, from crew joints to broken hearted slow jams. This was a great year but I'm constantly coming back to this one.

Freeway & Jake One - The Stimulus Package
Label: Rhymesayers
13z78g0.jpg

Never been a fan of Freeway and pretty much just bought this on the strength of Jake One's previous album/production credits. I was not disappointed. Freeway keeps it simple throughout on the lyrics side but he goes well with most of the beats here and some great features by Raekwon and Bun B really bring the album up. One highlight being the Bun B featured track "Sho Nuff" and my personal favorite on the album, "Never Gonna Change." Jesus christ that beat. Glad I got the instrumentals with it! Also, one of my favorite packagings since P.O.S. Never Better last year.
The drums on this record shit all over every other record produced this year. Seriously, if you're not nodding your head and smiling along with the snares in "Never Gonna Change" go fucking kill yourself. Jake One is laughing at your favorite producers right now. The production on this album is the equivalent to that good coke you get once in awhile. The kind that has you up 6AM the next day wishing you could come back down and stop locking your jaw up.

Kno - Death Is Silent
Label: QN5
1BjXt.jpg

One of my most excited releases of 2010. This was a long time coming and it did not disappoint. The production is sublime. Everything sounds right, none of it is muddy or horribly mastered (like a certain other high profile release). You'll often find yourself at a loss trying to figure out where samples end and drum machines/actual drums begin. Everything compliments each other. Some of the lyrics are a miss (Kno's verse on "I Wish I Was Dead") but it's negligible when everything else is perfect. I don't even want to make it sound like I'm slighting Kno in the lyric department either, he's great on almost every other song and actually goes to great lengths to differentiate his flow and structure and EVERY song. That's part of what makes this album so special and great, just the amount of love and care that went into it. Nothing on this record is half assed, or just thrown together. It's all deliberate.

Diabolic - Liar & A Thief
Label: Viper Records
x6j72u.jpg

Another great surprise! Diabolic is a close friend/affilliate of Immortal Technique and hearing that name you should have an idea what to expect. Some great lyrical gems here and darker themes on pretty much every song. My favorite being "12 Shots" which I won't spoil for you (SERIOUSLY GO LISTEN, CLICK THAT LINK). Album was timed perfectly and came at a time when I really needed something a bit more anger and frustration fueled in my life.
There were quite a few NE conspiracy rap albums that dropped this year but this is the one I keep coming back to (Season of The Assassin too, but to a much lesser degree) mainly because this is Diabolic's debut album and he sounds a lot more genuine and meaner here than everyone else.

Waka Flocka Flame - Flockaveli
Label: 1017 Brick Squad, Warner Bros., Asylum
9wKt0.jpg

This is the hardest album I've heard in years. It's not lyrical at all but this is the same kind of fuck you angry black music that blew rap up in the 90s. Flocka's enthusiasm is infectious and he carries it on every single track. If "Stimulus Package" is lockjaw solo coke music, this is coke with your weed oh fuck i just killed a pint of jack wake up in the drunk tank hope to god he isn't pressing charges music and it never felt so good. Turn up the bass and dumb the fuck out. Heavy rotation
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89Fyq4U9ptA

Strong Arm Steady - In Search of Stoney Jackson
Label: Stones Throw Records
300hao1.jpg

This album kinda blind-sided me. I was familiar with SAS but never heard an entire album by them before but with Madlib on the boards how could I say no? Glad I couldn't. This album flows like no other, every verse on this album feels like it fits. I don't think Madlib could have done better on production. Madlib's production hasn't sounded this fresh in a minute. This is amazing Sunday evening driving music. Best of Times Music Video.

Freddie Gibbs - Str8 Killa EP
Label: DECON
HIXbk.jpg

One of the most promising rappers coming up right now, Gangsta Gibbs never seems to disappoint. Along with his knack for story telling , his flow is one of his greatest talents. He switches it up constantly, he can do it fast, laid back, you name it. Helps that the selection of beats on the EP are varied and different but he adapts to them perfectly.

The Roots - How I Got Over
Label: Def Jam
qaVj7.jpg

I wrote a short review about why I think this is an incredible album for a friend's website so here is a link to my blog, linking to that site.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32Qr5oKKP-M

Curren$y - Pilot Talk I
Label: Def Jam, DD172
zUPGM.jpg

Think about the nice alcoholic beverage you've ever had. It's probably refreshing and a little sweet. Now think about drinking it on a beach somewhere in the Caribbean or in the Mediterranean. That's what this album is like. It's sequel, Pilot Talk II, is like the joint you smoke after that same drink while the sun is setting on the same beach, just reflecting.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNdADnQC-1s&hd=1

Honorable Mentions:
Vinnie Paz - Season of The Assassin
Dj Muggs vs Ill Bill - Kill Devil Hills
Asher Roth. Seared Foie Grois
Blacastan - Blac Sabbath
Black Milk - Album of The Year
Curren$y - Pilot Talk II
Apollo Brown - Reset
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (Would have been on the list but I ran out of points and I know alot of dudes will be doing this so It would have been unfair to take something off my list)
Eternia & Moss - At Last (Again, ran out of points but I know Shinobi will be repping it!)

If you're new to GAF-Hop, if you do one thing in this thread, PLEASE, PLEASE listen to this track and pay attention to the lyrics:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KcxmmJuk5g

One of my highlights of this year. This track just shocked me.

Big K.R.I.T. Wuz Here - 3

Yelawolf - Trunk Muzik 0-60 - 3
wzTiW.jpg

Rick Ross - Teflon Don -3

Kanye - 3
TXA4c.jpg

Big Boi - 2
Cudi - 2
Drake - 2
Flocka - 2

My big let downs were Bun B and Pimp C. Trill OG sounds like a Bad Boy record. Naked Soul has some bangers, but a lot of it has that weird posthumous 2Pac album feel. UGK is one of my all time favorites, so this was kind of a let down. Thankfully, it sounds like Big K.R.I.T. is filling that void with a finesse. Glass House sounds like vintage UGK. I'm talking pre Ridin Dirty. Country Shit, Viktorious, etc. I really hope he can top it. Aside from some mixtape filler, it could have been a 5 mic album.

Rick Ross came out of no where. I'm pretty much indifferent to his older stuff, but the combo of his voice/flow over the fantastic production and engineering makes it such as easy album to listen to. Really well crafted album. Never thought I'd be hyping a Ross album. MC Hammer and BMF cemented it. Just pure energy right there.

Yelawolf album is great. Some of the best thematic southern shit I've ever heard. Damn near flawless.

Toku just threw shots at Ye, put Flockavelli in his list and broke OP's rules in the same post. TOKU DON' GIVE A FUCK, HE DO WHAT HE WANTS.

How can I get hip to Kno? Any mixtapes? I clicked a couple YouTubes vids and the production is crazy.

He handles all the production for CunninLynguists but they don't really do mixtapes. Here are some must hear CL/Kno tracks:

I spent my 20 pts well. I'm giving my pts to albums I felt deserved it. Fuck padding my list out.

It's not about flaming man. Don't let anyone tell you what to give your points to just like how you shouldn't let others dictate what's good. Flockaveli got heavy rotation from me so it's getting two motherfucking points.

You're the one dictating what's good...By giving out a five your top vote would count more than anybody else's. :lol The point system is there for a reason, although it is admittedly a little convoluted. However, given that I came up with the system and started the thread I am allowed to play "Dictator," for the time being unless a mod decides otherwise.

Also you can express yourself in your write-up, which is excellent, and with the large albums covers you included

Okay, don't count my post then because I have interest in making the list bigger/not weighted.

Actually by letting people give out as many points as they want it would maybe allow some lesser known stuff pop into these threads. Otherwise this list is going to end up with the 25 artists dudes talk about ad nauseum already, and all this is is a place for you to tabulate votes and play dictator on other people's opinions.

For example: The new Slim Thug album totally bangs, and it'll probably go underrecognized on here under the swamp of everyone tugging themselves to Kanye, J. Cole, Kid Cudi, et al. in yet another thread. I should be able to give it all 20 points if I really want to up it. People are more likely to stand up and give something a shot if they write up something good about the album and ride for it with every one of their points.

Just saying.

Not true you can spend your points on whatever you want, if you want to put something lesser known up there go ahead. However, the objective of this thread is to make a list. And this should be a team effort, not a Toku effort, nor a Lambtron effort.

Kam you're my dawg, but you actually spent one point too many. I'm only pointing this out because I think you tried to stay within the rules.

Basically what I was trying to express but failed to. I was originally gonna give Dessa's album 10 pts but there were a couple other albums I wanted to feature.

I can't spend my points however I want if I'm limited to giving 3 points maximum to an album. If you wanted this to be a team effort you should have asked for advice in how to tabulate votes instead of telling people who challenge the method which was laid out that this is your thread. :)

The Illz - In Between Video Series - 3
Atmosphere - To All My Friends - 3
The Roots - How I Got Over - 3
Kane West - MBDTF - 3
Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma - 3 (does that even count?)
El- P - We're All Gonna Burn in Hell 3 - 2
SkuF'L - Welcome To My Block - 2
Eminem - Recovery - 1

You can pick whatever albums you want to be on the list, within the point restrictions. There is freedom, as much freedom as any balanced system will allow.

I was just curious if that even counted as Hip-hop, it's such a departure from the genre it's almost it's own thing. I still think he fits in with the other hip-hop instrumental artists like RJD2 and Blockhead though, so I thought maybe I'll keep it in.

I been smoking, and I read your point system rules again. The way my smoked brain understands it: I need to pick one more album out so I've got 10 albums on my list, so I can use 20 points. I've got 9 albums right now and 20 points distributed. But you said I spent one point too many.... Is this how Lil B feels all the time?

EDIT: I finally got it. :lol

HiResDes said:

I'm fully aware of that. What I am saying, and you are apparently missing, is that within these restrictions, it still makes it difficult to give an album an appropriate amount of praise. When I like shit, I do my best to spread the word about it. Being able to weigh more points on an album basically lets me or other people in the thread do that.

I mean, whatever, I'll give you a list, but the sample you get is not going to be an effective representation of the pulse of the hip hop listeners on the forum. Just going to be a circle jerk for the usual suspects.

Kno - Death Is Silent - 3
J.Lately - El Mananero - 3
Yelawolf - Trunk Muzik:0-60 - 3
Skuf'L - Welcome to my block - 2
Atmosphere - To all my friends... - 2
Royce Da 5'9 - Bar Exam 3 - 2
Nick Nando - The carryout 2 - 1
The Roots - How I got over - 2
Shad- TSOL - 2

I was thinking about modifying the rules and have considered what a daunting task this is going to be for all us. But here's the final idea. If there is enough variety in the voting I'll expand the list to include the top 50 albums. And the final idea is going to be include each and everyone in the OP within the mosaic I have created with clickable links to either Amazon or for mixtapes download links. :D

My preliminary list of 5. There are a few more albums I'll listen to before years end.

Kno - Death Is Silent 3

Tightly woven without the over indulgence and excess that you might expect from a producer-rapper
Conway
. Fantastic beats and and some brilliant verses. The album stays on topic as hard as that is to believe. The features (Tonedeff, oh shit) only supplement what Kno was trying to build. I have to say, the transition from They Told Me to When I Was Young has to be the biggest swing from depressed to happy I've ever had listening to an album. Kno's verse on I Wish I Was Dead fell a bit flat but I'm willing to forgive since it was somewhat compelling. I can't wait for the next Cunninlynguists album.

The Roots - How I Got Over 3

I'm not sure what to write up about this. It's the same old good shit. Phonte and Blu feature in a few tracks and I feel like they complement Black Thought really well. The main reason I've included this so high up is because of the track Now Or Never which helped me get my lazy ass in check. The album is very solid but the last two tracks don't seem to fit in. Not bad, just out of place

J. Cole - Friday Night Lights 2

I bumped the hell out of this the week it came out. It felt like an actual album compared to The Warm Up which was a mix of original beats and rapping over pre-existing stuff. My highlights of this are 2Face and Farewell although the whole thing is incredibly solid aside from Best Friend which I skip pretty much every time.

Kanye West - My beau..long ass name 1

Good album. I still don't dig the autotune at the end of Runaway. I can't accept that kind of mess in the middle of an album. It isn't a symphony where I can enjoy the instrumentation, it's the same simple ass beat with crazy warping of Kanye's verse for an extra 3 minutes. This isn't the first time someone has used a piano in a beat Conway.

Chris Rock as funny as he is didn't need to contribute to the length of Blame Game, make it a postlude or some shit. This isn't groundbreaking, people choose not to make long ass tracks where nothing is happening for a reason. I was looking at Kanye's Lastfm page and people are calling this shit Prog-Hop :lol

I may sound mad but I really dig the rest of the album. It def needed an executive producer though.

Big Boi - Sir Luscious Left Foot The Son of Chico Dusty 1

Not breaking new ground anything but it's enjoyable to listen to. Big Boi managed to make Gucci Mane not sound like Gucci Mane, that's an achievement in itself. The beats on this album are fan-freaking-tastic. I like it a bit more than Speakerboxxx.

no write-ups now cause i'm lazy. might come back and edit later

Kanye West - MBDTF - 3
Waka Flocka Flame - Flockaveli - 2
Kid Cudi - MOTM2 - 2
J. Cole - Friday Night Lights - 1
Big KRIT - KRIT Wuz Here - 3
Wiz Khalifa - Kush & Orange Juice - 1
Drake - Thank Me Later - 2
Curren$y - Pilot Talk - 2
Gucci Mane (Diplo) - Free Gucci - 2
MellowHype - BlackenedWhite - 2

Friday Night Lights-J.Cole 3 points

Recovery-Eminem 1 point

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy-Kanye West 3 points

How I Got Over-The Roots 2 points

Death Is Silent-Kno 3 points

Man on The Moon 2: Legend of Mr.Rager-Kid Cudi 2 points

Live from the Tape Deck-Skyzoo and Illmind 2 points

Mood Muzik 4- Joe Budden 2 points

In Search of Stoney Mason- SAS 2 points

I might switch out or change it around once BoB's tape comes out, because if its anything like Beast Mode, then its gonna be a 3 pointer lol.
