So as a Brit with no interest in NBA, what did that game do so wrong that made it the worst of the worst?

It didn't manage to release. First time in forever that EA failed to release a NBA game in every year. It also killed the development studio.

It "finished development," was printed, packaged, and shipped. Then a demo came out that showed the game was so bad and so buggy that EA had to recall all the copies at a massive loss and cancel the game POST-PRINTING.

APB failed so hard that it failed to be the biggest failure of the year.
Ha! I like that.

Really, FF XIII that bad? Wasn't around when it released so missed the threads. Can't possibly be worse than X, no way!

Kinect should have been #1 but you can't argue with NBA Elite either.

Also, nice to see FFXIII getting the routing it deserves - truly the worst possible direction for the series.

I can't really argue with the results. I haven't played those games, but I'm sure they were fails or whatever.

Fable 3 is technically the worst ever made, but thankfully not enough people on GAF played it to care enough to vote for it.

I think we may have to revote now that the Oddbox was released
It may split votes between the actual product and the CEO trying to defend it in the OT unless they are counted as one.

I'm surprised 13 beat out 14.

I mean, even if you assume the worst criticism about 13 is true, it's still league's better than even the best possible assessment of 14.

More people experienced 13's failures first hand.

It's all about relative expectations. People knew FFXIV was a MMORPG, and that set their expectations low. MMORPGs are a rather dejected genre for many fans, and for some it's not even considered a "true" Final Fantasy game (whether that's right or not, not my view). So when expectations or low or you "ignore" the title, it doesn't matter if it ends up not good or not and so there's no motivation to vote for it.

If you sat there and anticipated FFXIII, announced for so long and the premium RPG for the next-gen that SquareEnix wanted it to be and the next in the long storied franchise, it would have felt like the bigger fail by a long shot.

People asked the same about Kinect. How can Kinect be a failure if it was viable financially? But the metric is different depending on how you approach it. If you think the technology is bad, then Kinect might be considered a worse failure than NBA Elite because NBA Elite zapped itself out of existence but Kinect will continue to infect the gaming industry.

FFXIII made people feverishly anticipate it for five years and then was completely terrible. I doubt even a quarter of the amount of people anticipated FFXIV to that same level.

Aside from the audience difference, more people just plain cared more about FF13 being bad than they did about FF14 being bad, even considering the difference in what "bad" means there.

Well if you say it like that, sure it looks bad. :lol

Yeah, I can buy that, except that FFXIV was the next generation of the number 2 MMO of all time so I would think that expectations for the 1-2 million target audience would have been as high or higher than "just another game" in the FF series as in 13.

I don't think even the 2nd highest MMO of all time really matches the accumulated gamer credibility that the offline Final Fantasy series has built over the years, and I think even in GAF's reaction you could see that was the case. For example, I remember specifically in the FFXIV initial reveal people were like "OMFG FFXIV" and then when the trailer said "Online" there was a huge swelling of "oh...."

Not saying FFXI wasn't popular, or that FFXIV wasn't anticipated - see how close the votes were - just saying that at least on GAF and many other segments of the gaming community, FFXIII was clearly more eagerly anticipated.

I agree, I still don't understand how anyone can think FFXIII is a failure, it's still a great game.

can't say i have any beef with the "winners", all three failed pretty hard...

well FF13 was an all-right game but it failed to live up to people's expectations of the FF pedigree as well as all the hype from the initial videos

well it's not hard to understand

others think it's a shit game. A LOT of others :lol

A ton of people still to this day don't even know that FFXIV ever came out.

Is there a reason Square just doesn't bother to advertise their online FFs? There were commercials for XIII everywhere, but not one for XIV.
