Released in 1987, the year of the godly Predator, The Running Man is based on a novella by Richard Bachman. Many of you will know him by another name: Stephen King. Or as he likes to refer to himself as: Uncle Stevie.

Wassup.

The story was pretty far ahead of its time for seeing the rise of reality television and how it would consume the world's attention. Of course, that was until it started to star The Austrian Oak.

Led by the host Killian, the Running Man is a televised reality show where criminals are set loose in an arena then hunted down by the more popular stalkers. Of course, what Arnold movie would be complete without Arnoldisms.

Killian, off his stint of hosting Family Feud.

Fireball (not even Jim Brown is badass enough to survive Arnold)

Captain Freedom

One of my favorite things in this movie is how Killian is one of the few Arnold villains to NOT be intimidated by his catchphrase. He just casually plays it off...

I'll be back!

Only in a rerun.

MORE ARNOLD LOVE:
Total Recall
Predator
Commando
Conan the Barbarian

More Arnold love to come.

Man a movie based on the actual book plot would be amazing. Though I bet they would change the ending :(

This and Commando are 2 of Arnolds worst big movies. They are just too cheesy to be taken seriously. The "Only in a rerun" line is fantastic though.

The worst part is that The Running Man as well as The Long Walk are 2 of my favorite Stephen King stories and this movie was nothing like the dystopian corporatist view of the future that Stephen King wrote

Cheesy, but awesome for the same reasons. Just over the top and crazy.

As for the King story, it is awesome. The movie pales in comparison to it, but is still a lot of fun.

Such a bad post it doesn't even deserve the wrong.gif

Amber: They're running men. Last season's winners.
Fireball: No. Last season's losers.

So you are telling me that you thing The Running Man is superior to Conan, Terminator 1 and 2, Total Recall, Predator, and True Lies? Because I would disagree with that sir.

I can understand why they changed it. That movie would have been far more expensive to make. But damn it would have been great to see on screen. And that ending. You probably couldn't get away with that ending in a movie today, but the ending of the original story was so epic.

But you said among his "worst big movies", which it is not one of. There's that movie where he has a baby, the one with the Penthouse chick, the one with Rappaport, and the one with Sinbad. All of those are worse.

It's good but not God Tier.

That's not what I meant by big movies. I meant Arnold big movies. The movies you mentioned are not big movies from Arnold. Maybe if you said Twins or Last Action Hero those would count. But those aren't even real action movies. One is a comedy and the other is satire.

This. Saying Running Man is one of his worst movies is crazy.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu-- I didn't know this!

I love this movie. I love Commando. I love Total Recall. I even like The Sixth Day and Last Action Hero. I just love Ahhnold. No matter how good or bad the movie is. I love it.

Is this on Blu-Ray? It is! And it's $9!

I'll never forget one of my first dates as a kid I took a girl to see Throw Momma from the Train at the Culver Theater in Los Angeles (now the Kirk Douglas theater). Ironically the Culver Theater was walking distance from the old MGM building (now Sony Pictures owned) which was the main skyscraper in The Running Man (tower digitally added in). The old theater's projectors would often fail, and in this instance we were denied Throw Momma, and offered seats in another screen to watch The Running Man. I was 11 at the time and what is this? Oh nothing, just a fuck awesome action flick that would instantly become a personal favorite. Great thread.

Still funny--the sad part is I can totally envision this on Spike one day.
Well, we have "Hole in the Wall" on Fox... er Cartoon Network. You know, that channel that doesn't show cartoons as much anymore. Fuck I hate Network Decay. (Refraining from posting the TV Trope link, look it up if you have a day to waste.)

This movie, and others from that time, simply predicted the future of TV. At the time, it was to be funny. But now that it's actually real, it's just sad. I keep waiting for whatever show it is with "I'd buy that for a dollar!" to be made.

Man I had never seen this movie up until about 5 years ago, I was in Walmart and saw it in the $5 movie section. I had only vaguely heard of it but the tagline sold me immediately, "A game nobody survives. But Schwarzenegger has yet to play." In my mind Im all like fuck yea.

Such an awesome movie, so many one liners, Arnold making jokes about his Hawaiian shirt, Fireball being a hothead. A+ stuff.

So whats up next True Lies and Raw Deal?

I wasn't aware about the fact the movie was based in the book from S. King. I was probably 7 or 8 when this movie was released, but still today is one of the movies I can watch it over and over again.

There is a French movie based on the book, that is probably more faithful :
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084540/

I have only fuzzy memories of it, but it felt much more realistic, with the "hunters" being regular civilians and not villains out of a Batman comics.

By big I thought you meant "heavily promoted studio movies where the marketing focuses on Arnold Schwarzenegger", so that you were excluding Hercules in America and his weightlifting movie and stuff where he cameos.

Even if we are talking straight action movies, Eraser and The 6th Day are worse, and only Eraser is "bad". His batting average is pretty fucking stellar when he stuck to killing shit.

Someone already made a Raw Deal thread the other day. It appears that a Last Action Hero thread has appeared as well.

There are two left I want to make over the next two days. We have entered Holy territory with Arnold now. We are getting into the Arnold+James Cameron team ups. The first will either be Terminator or True Lies.

I PMd Sculli about a Terminator 2 thread, but it is only proper we wait until later in the year for that one since it is the 20th Anniversary.

I'm not sure why Maria Conchita Alonso was ever given work, let alone made to act in a cinematic masterpiece such as The Running Man.

And my favorite line? "Sorry, I got to go score some steroids."

Easily one of King's best books, along with The Green Mile. Absolutely was blown away by it when I was fourteen, it was quite honestly unlike anything I'd ever read before, and I had read a lot.

Why why why is this thread about the action movie?

as well as "Das Millionenspiel" (1970)

The funny thing is that actually some people believed the show was real. And while most viewers were shocked, a few liked the idea and called the broadcast station because they wanted to become a "hunter" :lol
