Rock Paper Shotgun said:
Gemini Rue, a dark, sci-fi adventure game that won the Student Showcase award at 2010′s IGF is coming out next month, and it’s looking tight like a baby in a bottle. Have a gander at the trailer after the jump. If all point’n'click games could be as dramatic as this, I might, y’know, sometimes play one of them. I actually got the chance to try Gemini Rue at last year’s EG Expo, and it reminded me of Snatcher and the Blade Runner game in all the right ways.

Here’s the official plot rundown:

Azriel Odin, ex-assassin, arrives on the rain-drenched planet of Barracus to find someone. When things go horribly wrong, he can only seek help from the very criminals he used to work for.

Meanwhile, across the galaxy, a man called Delta-Six wakes up in a hospital with no memory. Without knowing where to turn or who to trust, he vows to escape before he loses his identity completely.

As fate brings these two men closer together, we discover a world where life is cheap, identities are bought and sold, and a simple quest for redemption can change the fate of a whole galaxy.

And the features list:

Features:

* Over 60 hand-drawn backgrounds
* A moody, film noir atmosphere
* Control both Azriel and Delta-Six
* An innovative investigation system
* A gripping sci-fi mystery
* DVD-style commentary track

And according to Blues News, if you pre-order Gemini Rue (EDIT: And pay an extra $10) you’ll get yourself a limited edition CD of the game, too. After that it’ll only be available on the imaginary bullet train that is Digital Distribution.

I think I first saw mention of this game on the GAF a few months back, and it's been on my radar ever since. GR looks like a modern day Rise of the Dragon.

Really, really excited for this one.

Film noir atmosphere? Sold -- after finishing Ghost Trick, I'm in the mood for another text/adventure game. :)

Edit - Where can I pre-order the game?

Why is cyberpunk always dark and gritty? Maybe I'd like to play a game as a paper delivery boy who hacks opposing paper boy routes.

"Azriel Odin" is really what they came up with for a name for the main character? That certainly gives me faith in the rest of the games writing.

Are you the laughing man? >:

Wait, if I get the CD version for $10 more, it says it won't ship until early March... do I still get to download it on release day?

In the meanwhile, those who like P&C adventures should try The Blackwell Legacy.

"Your product will be shipping in early March, just after the game is
released on February 24th. But you won't have to wait to play the
game. In addition to the CD, you will receive immediate access to
the download version so you can play while you wait."

yeah.

For some reason I read that name in Jeff Green's nerd voice. Perfect.

Looks sweet, though I first thought the hand drawn backgrounds description made it sound like it would be the Snatcher or Rise of the Dragon style presentation.

...yeeah, cliche central. I'm sure most people wont mind, apparently there are many who think 999 has great writing for gods sake.
Still, I admire these modern-retro games and will still buy it, bad writing or not.

At first I wanted to write "look at these graphics, bleh" but then I watched the treailer and stopped caring.

It isn't. Cyberpunk is simply the view from below/street level (the punk) in a technological setting (the cyber)*. Your happy paper boy route is totes within reality. I couldn't name names off hand, but there have been non-dystopian/bleak cyberpunk works. Perhaps not so much in videogames.

*So, incidentally, a story set in a cyberpunk world but focusing on the top, the corporate, the political is technically not cyberpunk but simply sci-fi thriller. Line can get awful blurry, though.

EDIT -
Yeah, "Snatcher meets Blade Runner" is such a tautology. It makes my eyes hurt reading it. And to be honest, I'm not seeing any of either in this game, aesthetic similarities aside.

That said, it looks damn tasty. I want and will have.

Enjoyed the demo, but why isn't this on Steam?! There are PC games outside of Steam?! What is this.

Also, Azriel Odin. ROFL.

this game is awesome. If you liked point-and-click adventures in 90s BUY IT. I'm doing it as soon as my pay hits my bank account.

This is basically cyberpunk noir with great music and unusually solid VA for an indie game.

also I don't if it is appropriate to say about point-and-click game it feels polished.

Tried the demo out last night and the first thing I noticed is that a lot of the voice acting is pretty bad. But despite that, I still enjoyed the rest of the game quite a bit. I think I'm going to have to buy this game. Unfortunately, it's going to sit in my backlog for a little while. But next time I feel like playing another adventure game, I'll happily play this.

Ars Technica reviewed it:

It uses a formula that's already well-established and doesn't veer from the course. What it does so well is accentuate the strengths of that formula by presenting a gripping narrative coupled with a convincingly beautiful presentation. It's a love letter to adventure gaming, but at the same time it stands up as a thoroughly enjoyable modern release.

Verdict: Buy

Bought the game, I think its really important to support people who produce Adventure games, it's one of my favourite genres and it's great when independent people make amazing projects like this one

Bought it purely based on the Blade Runner reference, seeing it was an adventure game and seeing 1 screenshot.

I hope I'm not disappointed. Interested to see the depth of the dev commentary.
