Sony cancel a number of games across UK studios

Studios affected include Eyepet and SingStar dev Studio London, Wipeout developer Studio Liverpool and Evolution Studios, who are set to release Motorstorm Apocalypse in the UK this week.

“It has been decided that production on a small number of projects within London Studio, Studio Liverpool, and Evolution Studios will be streamlined or closed due to a portfolio review and project prioritisation,” Sony said in a statement.

“This decision was made following an internal review of all games and it was deemed that with the incredibly strong list of exclusive first party titles coming up both this year and in the near future, resource should be reallocated to enhance those projects closer to completion.”

It added further: “The affected first party studios have been and will continue to be vital assets within the WWS family, and have a history of producing genre defining games such as MotorStorm, WipEout, SingStar and EyePet. This decision will have no impact on the role that our first party studios will play in the future of all PlayStation platforms.”

SCEE wouldn’t comment further on the matter.

Hopefully jobs won't follow.

Has Sony, in the past, fired folks from Studios in the UK? I can't remember.

Hopefully won't cause any layoffs. Just shifting some development to NGP I hope. :)

Given the "project prioritisation" comment, that'd be by guess also.

It sounds like they're going to become helper groups for Sony's other studios. Probably something needed to change though considering that Sony's casual software and Motorstorm sell very poorly.

Eh? So there are games cancelled but it doesn't say which games?

ARE WIPEOUT AND MOTORSTORM CANCELED?!

Motorstorm: Apocalypse isn't going to be cancelled this close to release.

Helper groups don't make money, I wonder what projects they were working on before the cancellation.

They are most likely games you've never heard of - unannounced games very early in development - so they're not going to tell you what they are. There's very few publicly announced games from these studios at the moment.

Motorstorm Apocalyspe is obviously not cancelled. I doubt Wipeout for NGP is, but obviously it's further from release so I guess it's always a possibility.

You might wonder why they're making a public statement then, but I think it is because this is all nicely coded language for redundancies and there was whisperings of it as a result of meetings being held. And so they felt they had to make a statement about it. MCV's article reports on this:

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/43417/Jobs-in-danger-at-Sony-UK-studios

Staff across Sony’s UK studios are anxiously waiting to see if they will be spared from a restructuring process now underway.

Sony Liverpool, Sony London, and Evolution Studios will each be affected by the reorganisation, Sony has confirmed.

Unannounced projects will be “streamlined or cut”, the firm said, though added that Guildford-based Media Molecule will not be affected.

This afternoon, meetings were held at a number of Sony sites to warn staff of redundancies as the group reorganises its output, sources close to the matter told Develop.

I wonder if Sony London includes Cambridge or not. They seemed to be hiring up for more than one project (a PS3 one and they're working on Killzone for NGP), and it'd be a shame if they were, yet again, held back from making that big PS3 game they've supposedly forever been aiming to make.

Kinda sounds like they want to make sure they don't have any delays in other games coming out this year and are killing off projects on the drawing board or have just left the planning stages.

I won't cry if SingStar or Eyepet are lost forever, but I doubt they'd retire WipeOut or Motorstorm.

But yeah, hopefully everyone will remain employed, as they need to be around to finish those vehicular NGP games (that they better be making)

Games get cancelled all the time and we never hear about it or knew they even existed. As gofreak says the interesting part of this news is why Sony are announcing it.

I hate the word "Streamlined", which just means they should have just cancelled it if it wasn't going to be the original vision.

It's been well over three years since I heard from 'people' that Sony Liverpool and Sony Cambridge has 'jaw dropping' PS3 games in development and would soon see the light of day.

That day never came.

If they weren't dead before. They are now.

:(

Oh shi.

FFS Sony, just let London and Cambridge make a big budget PS3 game. Heck, let Liverpool do something else other than WipEout.

This makes me sad. :(

It's like Go Freak said, these will more than likely be very early in development projects which we know nothing about.

The amount of games that are canned that you never hear about is shockingly high. Some are still in concept stages, others are well into the development cycle, yet never announced.

I am worried about jobs, but seeing as though all these studios are hiring, I'd imagine they'll be moved onto new projects.

Indeed. I am trying to get some info from people I know, but not had any replies to my texts so far :(

Cambridge and London are actually separate AFAIK, so I will presume they're unaffected here.

In fact, IIRC, Cambridge may have gained staff after the last restructuring.

Liverpool though - yeah. I hope it's 'just' that work on a farther future project has been cancelled so they can all row in behind Wipeout on NGP. Afterall, Sony even mentions Wipeout in their press release as a hallmark franchise, so presumably they haven't gone and cancelled fresh work on that franchise (!)

sounds to me like they are going to be collaborating on a few high priority projects to get them out the door, before launching the studios independant games...

Sony: "Listen guys, we have almost a major exclusive launching every month this year, kick back, relax, why don't you go help out your buddies accross the street with their mega title for the holiday season... There's no need to rush your own projects now... plenty of time to get that done later...."

That's what it sounds like...

Peter Dille Leaves Sony
Peter Dille helped launch both the original PlayStation and the PS3, but now the senior vice president of marketing has left Sony.

Industry Gamers reports that Dille has left the company, but it's not know where he's going or why he's resigned. Sony has confirmed Dille's departure and added this generic statement:

"The leadership of our marketing effort is a key to the continued growth of the PlayStation brand, and the deep bench of executives and marketing team at SCEA will continue to drive the marketing function in North America until we establish a replacement. We wish Peter well in his future endeavors."

Dille spent some time at THQ between two stints at Sony, so perhaps he'll return to the company a third time in the future.
Wtf is going on.

In this context streamlining generally means budget cutting as opposed to heavy design changes.

No company would do that. You always have stuff on the table, sure you may be in full swing with one project but there will be other projects on the go all the time.

Pretty sure the statement read "closed" projects. They will shut down projects that might be a conflict of resources and shift attention to major titles that are close to completion. Very important part of project and product management.

Exactly my point my man, exactly.... I was doing a rough translation of the below:

“It has been decided that production on a small number of projects within London Studio, Studio Liverpool, and Evolution Studios will be streamlined or closed due to a portfolio review and project prioritisation,” Sony said in a statement.

“This decision was made following an internal review of all games and it was deemed that with the incredibly strong list of exclusive first party titles coming up both this year and in the near future, resource should be reallocated to enhance those projects closer to completion.”

I wouldn't take that as doom and gloom for the studios...

So Polyphony remain untouched despite the lengthy process of GT5, yet Evolution delivered three HD racers in that time, Liverpool got two PSP WipEouts out the door and WipEout HD. Yet they get shafted? Fucks sake.

Evolution studios is useless, shocked that Sony have not closed shop with them as of yet but besides that cancelling games is hardly a shocker. It could simply be a case that the UK studios are too big for their output so Sony are cutting the excess however by the sound of it, projecrs are being cancelled however employees are simply moving to help out on bigger games. Sony just purchased Media Molecule not long ago so it's not like they have suddenly thought they have too many studios and the time has come to close some of them. My thought that the UK studios have too many employees goes completely out the pan though knowing that the HOME team is expanding, Studio London has something stupid like 250 employees I believe.

Imply come logic and understand why that is the case. Hint: 6.3 million and 5 million prologue

PD is one of Sony's most profitable studios, they don't really help you make your case.
