Human slavery is a buyers market right now.

there was that news story just this week about a doctor in the UK keeping a slave, she fed her 2 pieces of bread a day and summoned her with a bell, occasionally letting her call her family overseas, but never letting her out the house alone

$90 is insane. I can't imagine how many times I've spent that kind of money without a second thought. Bizarre.

At this very moment, between 12 million and 30 million slaves are working around the world. That’s according to low and high estimates from sociologists and the International Labor Organization.
I'm honestly surprised that 30 Million is a 'high' estimate.

The reason for this price slide: a massive boom in the world’s population, especially in developing countries, has increased the supply of “slaveable” people.

And this has basically turned a human being into a cheap commodity – Bales says like a Styrofoam cup that’s cheaply replaceable if damaged, “If they get sick, what’s the point of paying for medicine – it’s cheaper to let them die and acquire a new one than it is to help the ones you’ve got.

Maybe I'm just naive, but I find this shit genuinely shocking. I thought we (as a human race) were past this BS. Guess not.

Where does slavery still exist?
Europe, Russia, Africa. Everywhere really. Its huge business in former Soviet countries where a lot of women get tricked into being sex slaves all over Europe.

This was the plot of the flick Eastern Promises. Pretty brutal movie.

In the US and most Western countries? Sex market (really sketchy massage parlors, etc) and some agricultural labor.

In the developing world? A depressing amount of areas.

This is the problem of having too big of a population.

People become so much more expendable.

India has a large amount despite the current way of entrapment being made illegal 30 years ago (Tell them they will have job if they come with them, give them a starting loan of often less then the equivalent of $100, tell them they must work till they pay their loan off, have their family working for you for decades)

my wife knows someone who's husband is working on some rich guy's land for last 20 years because he can't pay him $ 500 that his father borrowed from rich guy. he only comes home once a year to see his family.

Depends on how you define it. Sex slavery and debt slavery are the two most common forms and they are common not just in the developing world but in the West too. My wife worked with an organisation that looks into Asian women in precarious employment... not nice stuff!

The only place that really has old school slavery are some parts of Africa, Mauritania is one I think?

However in general subsistence wages mean that most people are slaves in everything but name in a huge amount of countries in the world.

Cool slavery anecdote. Your wife going to say anything to the authorities or is she cool with inhumane practices?

Slave or a copy of Homefront?.... Hmmm decisions, decisions...

enh, I'll take Homefront.

I'm sure if you wanted a slave in a modern country they'd come at a higher premium than $90. Third world drags the average down hard, I bet.

Which is a shame, because I hate doing the laundry.

If you are talking PC, take the slave.

Then free them :D
Not a bad idea... I might ask them to do the dishes first, though :P

Weren't there slave stories in the US also?

So it just isn't rampant only in Eastern Europe Block or South Western countries

I know some GAFfers posted stories on that Rich Beverly Hills type wife who had "adopted" a 10 year old girl, but really was there "housekeeper" slave who lived in a pantry compartment and did all these ridiculous things

Everywhere. There are probably tens of thousands of slaves in North America alone.
20,000 tricked/captured crossing the Mexican boarder every year. Most of them sold to Americans and Canadians.

In a lot of countries the distinction between slave and servant is very thin. I know I found it hard to get used to my wife's family having servants. They send them through school and pay them as well as feeding them and housing them, along with giving them money when they get married.. but still it was weird.
