There already exists an official Islamic debate thread here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=261564

But I thought I would make another thread so that the Muslims on Gaf have a space to introduce themselves without fear of debate and so we are known to each other. I have ended up PMing with many people, so this just saves my inbox from being full lol.

So just a respectful request: please don't turn this into a debate, either between each other on sectarian grounds, or from non-Muslims to us. Non-Muslims are welcome in the thread, but if you wish to debate please go to the Islamic debate thread :D

I also ask that if someone does bust in here looking for a debate, that we ignore them. :D Thanks.

So starting with myself. My previous name is Will, though I have taken the name Zahir for those who wish to call me an Arabised name :P I am a white convert from Australia. I have been Muslim for more than four years now, I took my Shahada in Ramadan of 2006. I am now 24.

I have been married for a year, my wife is from Bangladesh. I live in Sydney, South East.

I hope this finds you all in the best of health and iman. Who are you? Where you from? :D

Also

Asalaamu Alaykum Wa Rahmetullahi Wa Barekatahu :D

وعليكم السلام ورحمة الله وبركاته

Muslim living in the US. Los Angeles California to be exact.

Atheist here living on the Central Coast (NSW) Australia.

Not here to wreck thread, was wondering how you became a Muslim living in Aus? Is there a large Muslim population where you live?

What is the primary Social identity that you all identify your self with? Your Religion, Nationality, something else?

I'm a Caucasian of Polish and Irish Decent, Living in the United States, who's family has been born in the United States for the last Century, with no strong religious background, and identify myself primarily as an 'American' (Citizen of the United States)

Wow, another Muslim Australian on GAF? Never thought I'd see the day. Though unlike you I was born Muslim and my parents are Lebanese. Live in Melbourne.

Always interested in hearing about converts. So far I've only met two Australians who've converted and they had really awesome stories to share. Do you mind sharing a bit about yours?

G'day, I met a Muslim through Uni and through him met his Sheikh and then came into contact with the community. There are certain Muslim ghettos in Sydney where the community is quite prominent.

Where on the Central Coast? :D
I'm Tahir :) Born in America, parents born in Montenegro. I'm Albanian.

Pleased to meet you Akhi :)

I think that it is difficult to simplify identity too much. Identity often comprises of many contradictory and symbiotic notions and things.

I would say that I am culturally 'Aussie', but that is confused by the way I dress and the phrases I use. Politically I have a shared allegiance, on a personal level I live my life according to the Sha'riah, but on another I live following the laws of the country I am in, which is part of that. I would view, say, upholding the speed limit, as an Islamic duty for example.
Muslim living in Indonesia. Bandung, to be exact.
Cool :) I never got as far west in Java as Bandung. Hopefully heading back there at some point so never know, might run into you :P

Nice :) is it hard to find halal food there?

Ah ok, so are your parents/siblings/wife etc religious? If so, are now also muslim?

I live at Holgate (obscure acreage area), it's close to Erina and about 20min from Gosford. You know the area?

Nice :D where abouts? My parents live there so I go down there a lot. It is a small community so you never know, I might know people you know. I hang out with a couple of comedians from down there (Aamer and Nazeem), along with people like Waleed Aly :)

Sure thing, though it is kind of hard to compress the story... then again it isn't as interesting as any I've heard, one brother I know is Indigenous and a Bra boy, the brother found Islam and then found out he was Ahlul Bayt :-o crazy crazy story.

I was a very virulent atheist for most of my early life. I was studying at uni and had a sociologists interest in religion. I looked into all of the different faiths that I had access to with a kind of morbid curiosity.

I met a brother, Karim, through uni and started quizzing him about his religion. He didn't feel comfortable to answer some of my aqidah questions so he asked me if I wanted to come to a talk that was going on at the time. It was Ramadan.

So I rocked up to a class being held in Auburn in a basement lol. The teacher there was Sheikh Naeem Abdul Wali, a white convert who studied in Fatih in Turkey. I found that the aqidah of the Muslims was a sledgehammer to so many paper walls of my understanding. This is not to mention that the pious people amongst the Muslims had a moral character I had never seen.

Everyone has some idea of what they would like to be, but with most people I knew, and certainly with me, there was a huge gap between what that was and how they were. However amongst these individuals, there was no gap. They had such a beauty of character that I was awed. It strikes me to this day. A humbleness, a selflessness but also a strength.

I went to classes every day from then on, then after a two weeks, the Sheikh came up to me and asked me 'so why aren't you Muslim yet?'. So I took Shahadah in the basement with Karim and him. It was the greatest moment of my life. The fulfilment of the fitrah was such a deeply moving thing.

Since then I have never looked back, though we all have our set backs. I met my wife 6 months after my conversion, and so the other half of my religion was fulfilled. Most of my friends ditched me after my conversion, though it went both ways (I used to drink and party alot). The exception was a mate who when I converted asked me 'does it make you happy?' and I said yes, so he said cool, and we are still friends. Praise God for that.

My parents are both historians and were cool with it, though when I went to the Blue Mountains for a 'deen intensive' they had a bit of a freak out. My grandma was a hardcore Irish Roman Catholic and disowned me though. In general the rest of my family saw that the change was a positive one in me, I stopped partying and got serious about my life.

AlhamduliLlah.
Ah ok, so are your parents/siblings/wife etc religious? If so, are now also muslim?
My parents were raised religious but don't have a specific faith now. My sister is an atheist. My wife was born Muslim and was getting into the religion when I first met her.

An old housemate of mine was from Terrigal, and the wife and I went up the coast for our Honeymoon, we like to go up there every now and again. It is a beautiful place in some areas, though my housemate really dissed how it was to live there.

This maybe should have been in the Islamic debate thread but this seems to be a more laid back thread so my dumb question seems slightly more appropriate here: Do you guys listen to music and to be more specific contemporary music? :P I cannot remember the Islamic stance on singing and musical performances in general but I think it is forbidden in Saudi Arabia and maybe Iran? So I wonder what the Islam says on the topic and if it's one of those things that's up for interpretation then what's your take?

Thanks for answers in advance :o)

Is there any chance you could send it to the debate thread? :) It will still involve discussion, as the laid backness is partly because of the lack of debate :D

My thanks!

Will do.

EDIT: Googled and found this pretty comprehensive response. I'm sure there's more to the topic but that gives me an idea at least :o) The reason why I asked is because I live in an neighborhood with (I think) majority Muslim inhabitance and I frequently seem to stumble upon what seems to be Arabic music playing.

I'm not really a Muslim but I used to perform the adhān in my old downtown Atlanta neighborhood, at the encouragement of friends who belonged to the faith.

<== Pakistani, 30, live in NYC. From 0-15 years old = devout Muslim, 5 times a day prayer, 3 times read Holy Book, etc.

From dad's death in 1995, from the age of 15, now I'm 30, I became aware of the real world and realised religion wasn't for me

Gave Up on Islam, right now consider myself Agnostic, moving towards Atheism

Hell half of my family is agnostic with only a basic primer coating of being called a Muslim
No pork, drugs, alcohol, or the rudimentary stuff associated with it, but with it, no prayers or holy book, or hell even go to Mosque to pray
(I live 1 block from a Masjid, haven't taken a step in there for 15+ years)

I can not follow something that wasn't a choice but more of a brain washing mechanic to keep the "Herd" in check

I love philosophy of religion, some very poignant views, but I can not go back to something that I consider detrimental to society

These seem like things that are meant to inspire debate. Thankyou for posting but forgive a lack of reply.

Not trying to, just saying what led me to it

I apologies if it looks like I was trying to create something, insinuate, just saying what moved me away from it

<--- 25 year old Bahraini here. Raised as a "regular" Sunni. In school, due to secterian issues, teachers never taught us much about Abu Talib, Al-Jamal, or Siffeen. Years later, I learned about both the Sunni and Shia view which helped me form some conclusions. Due to Western influence, I always leaned toward Ash'ari ideology. I did become a Salafi after reading Sharh Al-Aqeedah Al-Wasittiyah in my college days. Soon after, I chose to forget everything I learned in school and learn the hard way. It is much more rewarding, I believe, but sometimes rejecting ideas that you've been brought up with are pretty tough.

Hold on to your friend here. Muslim or not, hold on to him/her. This--this is the character of a true friend.

Oh, mind sharing some tips? I've been having difficulty trying to find a muslima in my own city, hahaha.

Visit the Teh 63 in the BIP everyday and pretend you like the horrid bitter tea they are serving there hahahaha. After doing this for a day or 3 ask her out.

As of last night, my countries census counts me as a muslim. I guess I get to check in here. I ticked 'Buddhist' last time and intended to be a mormon this year but the option wasn't there.

Wasalaam bro! I know you've only been here a short time, but already respect your contribution.

I'm a Muslim based in London here. Born and raised in the UK, originally from Bath (a very quaint old fashioned posh little Roman city) and later moved to London for Uni and later work.

Good thread :)

Haha lol. A friend of mine (Kirsty), some leftist poet English graduate came to visit us and tore my census apart! She was like, nooo Naim, don't fill this Big brother BS out. I was like, OI! I could get fined cos of that! She was like, meh, all for a god cause. Lol.

Never before in my wildest dreams I have ever thought that I will get advice like this in NeoGAF, of all places.

Hahahahah.

Well, might as well check ;)

I have corresponded with you before, but hey again :) Why do you link Western influence with Ash'ari aqidah if you don't mind me asking and not to start a debate.

Palestinian muslim living in California.
Pleased to meet you :) lots of Californians it seems. Well at least 2 lol.

'm not really a Muslim but I used to perform the adhān in my old downtown Atlanta neighborhood, at the encouragement of friends who belonged to the faith.
I have a personal preference to being the Muezzin over leading the salat. I guess it is the non-Arab convert in me? :P

Do you have many Muslim friends? I find that non-Muslims that spend a lot of time with Muslims end up picking up many of the mannerisms, whether they like it or not.

Indeed :) he is a gamer too, got me on NEOGaf lol.

Haha.. welcome then :P expect to have an unexplained interest in studying law/engineering/medicine, getting angry when you see women driving and become a magnet for 'random' security checks.

Well, the opinion that God was everywhere/no where was something I think I picked up from Christianity. Interpreting divine attributes to metaphors as well. Hahah, really hard to talk about stuff like this without being sucked into a debate. =p

Ha ha! I nearly did exactly that until someone advised me of the fine :)

Cheers man. I don't feel any different yet but I didn't shave this morning, that has to count for something. Baby steps.

Have fun you crazy cats!

Yeah lol. I'm Ash'ari :P So we'll leave it at that for the sake of keeping the thread intact.

In the states there are lots of murders of census workers :( one got hung with 'fed' written across his chest :S

Haha, as long as you're not brown... or Brazilian, you should be right. When I don't wear a khufi or a turban, people just think I'm a bikie :P

Haha, yeah of all places... and from a Dutchy even.

Anyway, she was a sweet beautiful girl. It didn't work out though because of the differences. Not because she was muslima though, rather because she was pretty traditional Javanese.

Ugh. The census information is part of how the government decides what public facilities are needed in what parts of the country. Hospital allocations, recreational buildings, that sort of thing.

It is also entirely seemly and right for a government to be able to know how much of its population are of what faith, what background, what career. How else would they best serve their population if they do not know their population? Most people don't put in the effort to meet their local MP and make their needs known so such things are necessary.

I'm opposed to (publically installed) CCTV, national ID cards and other "big brother BS", but the census actually has good use and not filling it out/filling it out incorrectly is simply petulant.

(Complete apologies about potential derail. If a conversation strikes up over this I promise to spin it out into its own thread asap)

Born and raised in England, west london, 3rd generation British-Pakistani. David Brent from the Office drove past my house in the Christmas special. Watch it and you'll know where i live :0

Muslim, born and raised in the southern part of the Netherlands. My mom came at her 7th year and my dad around 30. (although he traveled across europe for his job before that)
There are quite some muslims here but there isn't really a community though, most people live their religious life individually.

More that my new lifestyle was incompatible with theirs. I don't drink, I don't date and I do not view being alone with women as appropriate. This can make socialising hard, as often such things are involved.

Haha. He only drives past one house? (I haven't seen it)

Be careful akhi, someone might stalk you!

Lets hope this changes, we are all siblings after all :D

Did you do a lot of those things before converting? I read you already mentioned drinking, what of the rest?

It is not appropriate to talk about my sins. Lets just say I lived like most non-Muslims my age who study at University and have a wide friend circle.

Well, they are building a pretty big mosk now so that's a good sign!

Whoops! I mis-read you akhi :(

I thought you were talking about Gaf lol. You can get mosques built there? Awesome. It is like pulling teeth here. We have to basically own the whole suburb before we get approval lol.

Born and raised Muslim here. I was born in Scotland, lived in Pakistan for about 5 years and I have been living in the US since I was 5 years old. Although I have visited Pakistan quite a few times. I live in North NJ.

I'm angered at being forced to fill that thing out , a fine for not doing it wtf is that shit, the goverment fucking hates us. i fucking hate the goverment.

1 grand jeeeeeeze
