NYC man gets ticket, passerby cracks joke, cops SWARM

New York City's War on Bikes results in some collateral damage in this new clip shared by NYC the Blog, which shows a Brooklyn cyclist pulling up to a friend's apartment, but riding from the street onto the sidewalk as he approaches the building. Even those "few seconds" were illegal, especially in this strict climate for riders, so the NYPD pulls him over. As a few neighborhood guys walk by, they tease the cyclist about his silly crime. One police officer takes issue with the banter and that's when things get ridiculous.

"Riding on the sidewalk, huh?" a guy walking by laughs. "You a grown man, you know that's against the law," adds another man. "Mind your own business," the cop shouts back, and the smart-ass makes his first mistake, countering with, "I wasn't even talking to you!" From there it's on, and pretty embarrassing for both sides, but mainly the professionals.

Friends of the ticketed cyclist are filming the entire thing from a balcony.

The rest really should be watched in the video above, but as the passerby becomes more flabbergasted at the aggressive attitude of the cop in sunglasses, it spirals into a full-blown situation in which five officers, flanked eventually by two cop cars and one NYPD van, arrest a guy for having a big mouth -- basically for being annoying -- and then getting outraged.

The scene gets more chaotic as other people from the neighborhood gather around and the man being arrested claims he's pushed by an officer.

According to the video description, the man was eventually charged with "harassment, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest." The guy who started the whole thing by riding on the sidewalk (for a split second, his friends claim) stands in one spot through the entire thing.

It really is disturbing.
 
Cops went wrong by even taking him seriously in the first place, the guy went wrong by not listening and retaliating. Cops are definitely the ones that took it to far.

People are stupid assholes, this is what happens when one of the assholes has authority over another one. Stupidity ensues.

Arresting cop may have been having a hard day. Normally you would be cursing, but instead he abused his police powers to validate his anger by claiming disorderly arrest.

Everyone over reacted. The cops over reacted to the guys comments/requesting more cops and the guy just shouldn't have said anything, whether it was true or not.

A whole lot of stupid.

Why is it we get the bad cops always cop on film, but never any of the good cops?
 
That's horrible. They are the supposed professionals and they can't handle someone making a joking remark to a guy on a bike any better than that? No wonder they resort to pepper spraying kids. Even if the guy shouldn't say anything to the guy on the bike he was a good distance away when the cop made him stop.

The guy shouldn't have said anything, but I only say that because you're eventually BOUND to have a douche of a cop somewhere along the way who will do exactly this.

Also, the guy couldn't bother to hold his phone sideways? Sheesh.

I for one will feel safer knowing I can ride my bike on the sidewalk without being mocked by a passing wiseacre.
 
I don't know what the particular laws are because I've had zero dealings with police, but I always had the understanding that if a police officer asks to see your ID - you give it to him. I don't know whether you can legally refuse or not, or if the the police officer has to give a valid reason first why he needs to see your ID.

I did learn from a defense attorney last week that you can refuse all field sobriety tests, including the portable breathalyzer and you can demand that they take you to jail or a hospital for a blood test. You won't get your license suspended unless you refuse the tests at the jail or the hospital, but you can basically tell them to shove those field sobriety tests up their ass.
 
resisting arrest seems kinda stupid since there wasn't much "resisting" going on. then again, I can't hear the audio thanks to my hair dryer.

from the video, I guess stupid all around.

I think he's saying if it was a white guy, it wouldn't have escalated that far. I actually kind of agree. Apropos of nothing. I mean, the guy who actually ADMITTED to a crime is just standing there with his bike, uncuffed.

To be fair, maybe in the area he lives, he's experienced/seen a lot of aggression from young black men on the street? I know I have. Then again the black community seems to be the largest ethnicity group where I live
 
And to make it worse there is a what the video is calling a drunk guy wandering like 50 ft from all this in the middle of the street. Two cop cars and a van with like 7 officers to handle one guy for making a throwaway comment to a guy.

whats with the crackdown on cyclists? is it for safety reasons or something? i wanna get a bike this summer but i dont wanna have to keep worrying about doing little things that will result in ticket after tickets.

Right but they are the instigators. What happened afterwards occurred because they needed to get involved with something that was none of their business. Was an injustice done to the biker? Based on the description... no.

It shouldn't have been bought up in the first place but I guess it was inevitable.
 
I laughed when they were trying to direct the police's attention to the guy who was obviously high/drunk crossing the street.

I'm not sure, but I remember NY trying to pass a law that makes it madatory for cyclists to get a license. dumb shit, really

Never saw him resist anything in that video. He gave them his ID, they cornered him, called more cops, and at that point everyone else is completely baffled by what's going on.
