Ubisoft Wants Driver To Be The Next Assassin's Creed

MCVUK put up a fascinating interview with Ubisoft today in which they revealed their ambitions for Driver.

MCVUK said:
Ubisoft bought Driver and its Newcastle-based UK creator Reflections Interactive from Atari in 2006, but the game hasn’t seen a fully-fledged sequel in the five years since.

Pannell added: “Despite the fact there’s not been a Driver game for over five years, it is still in the top five Ubisoft brands in terms of awareness.”

Ubisoft wants to build on that and turn the game into the driving genre’s equivalent of Creed, said Pannell.

“Of course Driver and Assassin’s Creed are two very different types of game, but they both have mainstream appeal and the ability to capture the imagination of a wide spectrum of core and casual gamers. The ambition for all our studios is to make games that have the scope, depth, lasting appeal, enjoyment factor and sales potential of games like Assassin’s Creed.

"From an investment point of view we are treating both franchises like true blockbuster titles, so the ambition is there.”

The marketing plan is still to be finalised, but the firm said E3 will play a big part in raising trade awareness as well as a mass market push.

“We have a real opportunity to take this mainstream due to the broad appeal of the franchise,” said brand manager Jan Sanghera.

“Driver is most definitely back and the marketing campaign will make sure it stays firmly on the map for this year.”

I'm sure this isn't what they are talking about, but...

When I'm on the road, I drive like I'm playing Assassin's Creed.

Never speed alone out in the open. Get into a crowd of cars and you'll never be singled out.

If you go alongside another lone speeder, you still have a 50/50 chance.

So, I take this to mean that Ubisoft believed a console transition would have guaranteed Driver to be as popular as Assassin's Creed. Yeesh.

They better have a very pretty producer to blind the audience of it's quality.

Assassin's Creed's success had nothing to do with Jade Raymond. Unless you think 8 million people were watching Ubi's E3 dev diaries.

I read that as Driver was going to be IN the next Assassin's Creed and I was very confused.

Also, the fact that this is only the second mention I've ever heard of this game (and the first was an article talking about games that will flop in 2011) does not bode well for it's success.

Wow, that was unexpected. I.. want to just laugh it off, but I love the original games too much

I don't know what to think now

Interesting... though I've never played a Driver game, so... is it only driving or is it open world or what? Are we talking GTA-clone or something more substantial?

This guy is off his trolley.

The first one was incredible, but since then Driver has been in constant decline, and there's little evidence this one is going to set the franchise alight again, as much as I want it to. It's probably best to let Tanner rest.

Is this that crazy-ass driver game that Idle Thumbs was talking about back in the day.
Where you're like in a coma and going on car chases but you can also fly around the city and possess souls and drive their cars?

Yes

WAT

So the game takes place in the mind of someone who is then empowered by the fictional avatar he controls? Maybe it will be like a driving Assassin's Creed, they could do crazy things with that concept.

As opposed to the constant run of the mill bullshit they release otherwise right? I'm glad they seem aware of it.

I don't think I have liked a single game design decision out of Ubisoft in the last 5 years. They do some things right but a million things wrong; it's the same for every franchise.

I've forced myself through every recent Ubisoft title I have finished. In my opinion they haven't made a triple A game in the past generation, Assassins Creed included.

I personally think that the original Driver was better than all of the Assassin's Creed games so I don't see any reason why this HD version can't also pull it off.

I agree with the first half of your statement, that the original Driver was a better game than all of the AC series.

The original Driver had a lot of the similar appeal of the later 3d GTA games and the later Need for Speeds. Time has left it behind.

Between Wheelman and the more recent Drivers, it's pretty obvious that you can't pull off the formula anymore. I suspect this game will tank.

Well to do that, they'd have to drop all Nintendo console support with the series and have a woman game designer push it.

I kid.

They have to make the game an experience which cannot be replicated by others, and unfortunately driving is pretty basic...and the story isn't making me froth with demand.

Some interesting features so far, though.

I remember Driver 2 was my most rented game as a kid. The ability to go around stealing other people's cars at the time blew me away. I don't think i really played the story mode.

As long as they keep Tanner in the car at all times (no foot traversal, no shooting people, etc) and keep the vehicle physics from being too arcadey, I think this reboot has a genuine shot at greatness.

But you're right about this game probably selling poorly. I really enjoyed the vehicle physics in the Mafia 2 demo but most people on podcasts seemed to hate it and that's how I remember the original Driver feeling.

Driver is the next Assassin's Creed. As in sequel.

Instead of Desmond Miles taking over the body of his ancestors, he finally finds that one relic which allows him to take over the body of all humans on earth. Which spawns a new series called Driver.

The only way Driver will be successful again, is if they focus on the driving and not make it a shitty GTA clone. Go back to the formula of Driver 1, set it in a lively city with a realistic physics model, and it has a chance of being good.

Instead, they shoehorn a weird explanation of why you can switch from car to car (coma... seriously?) instead of being able to manually get out of the car and switch.

They could keep the foot traversal in... but limit it to ONLY being able to travel from car to car.

I think this will break much of the appeal. Balancing your speed/aggression against your car's health was part of the magic of the original. Allowing people to switch cars mid-mission will only make the game worse. Plus, if you allow foot traversal then cops will need foot traversal and then players will complain that they can't shoot/kill the cops. It'll inevitably end up being another crummy GTA clone.

Driver needs to be about the driving. Nothing else.

The quick car transition is the core concept of the game. So that you can have intense, action packed races that involve massive crashes that don't break up the rhythm and speed (though you never jump ahead, so totalling your car has drawbacks, naturally). The multiplayer in particular is looking very interesting.

Driver definitely sounds interesting, but in terms of setting nothing can capture that feeling for me like Assassins Creed.

It's tough to compare the two though, what do they mean exactly? Mass appeal? Creative output? These questions are important.

IMO, for Driver to become sucessful again, it needs to stay away from the GTA comparissions. Focus only on driving, no walking stuff.
