WHAT IS "X-MEN: SCHISM"?
"X-Men: Schism" is a five-part X-Men event beginning this July, exclusively from Marvel Comics. Written by the acclaimed comics author Jason Aaron (Scalped, Ghost Rider, PunisherMAX, Wolverine) and featuring a different superstar artist for each issue (Carlos Pacheco, Frank Cho, Daniel Acuna, Alan Davis, and Adam Kubert), "Schism" is a story years in the making; one that will shake the foundations of Marvel's mutant heroes, and ultimately divide the X-Men into two groups: those siding with current leader Cyclops, and those siding with Wolverine. Once head-butting rivals, now brothers united in a common cause, these two heroes will clash over wildly conflicting methods, set against the backdrop of one of the largest threats the X-Men have ever faced. The outcome of "Schism" will determine the future of the X-Men for years to come, and thrust them back into the spotlight of the Marvel Universe in a very big way.

This is not a story about painting anyone as a villain, or about one side being right and the other side being wrong... We're dealing with two guys who have very strong principles, and very strong beliefs; they also have definite ideas about what the X-Men should be doing, and how they should be doing it. They just find themselves at an impasse.

-Jason Aaron, Writer
"Schism" is the X-Men's "Civil War." The biggest X-Event in a decade divides the mutant universe across distinct battle-lines and asks readers the question: Whose side are you on? And there's a reason "Schism" ends at exactly the same time as "Fear Itself." Next summer, the entire Marvel Universe will have its eyes on the X-Men.

-Axel Alonso, Editor In Chief

SO HOW DID IT COME TO THIS?
The events of "Schism" have been subtly building in the X-Men books for years now. Its roots reach all the way back to "House of M" and its aftermath, when Professor Xavier stepped down and Cyclops became the unofficial leader of a race on the edge of extinction. Tasked with ensuring the survival of mutantkind, Cyclops has been forced to make some very difficult and often contraversial decisions. He has moved his team across the country, from upstate New York to San Francisco. He has allied himself with Namor and Atlantis, and raised an island form the sea; called Utopia, its shores are open to all mutants seeking asylum. He has welcomed former enemies into the X-Men's ranks -- including the Master of Magnetism himself, Magneto. He has created a secret death squad, X-Force, and tasked it with exterminating those who would commit mutant genocide. He has led allies into battle against impossible odds, and sacrificed the lives of friends and even family, for pursuit of the "greater good." He has done all of this in the name of mutant survival, and with the "messiah" Hope now returned and the X-Men publicly viewed as heroes, Cyclops's goals now appear to be within reach.

Being shepherd to the mutant flock was far from easy, and Cyclops's decisions have on a personal level cost him at least one friendship (Beast has left the X-Men and rejoined the Avengers) and a son (Cable died returning X-Force to the present, after a mission to the future to save Utopia). Although he shoulders a heavy burden Cyclops has never been alone however, and is able to rely upon a diverse support group that includes his lover Emma Frost, his mentor Professor Xavier, and his most ardent acolyte Magneto. But through it all, there has been one mutant to back his every play, to offer brutally honest opinions and encouragement, to get his hands dirty when necessary, to rely upon to get the job done: Wolverine.

Wolverine is the one Cyclops turned to when his secret X-Force death squad needed a leader. Wolverine is the one Cyclops turned to when the hard things needed doing. And Wolverine has done those hard things, not without questions or reservations, and not without coming to blows on more than one occasion; but ultimately, done because he believes in and shares their common goals. He trusts in Cyclops and his vision, but that trust of late has cost Wolverine, and those closest to him, much. He watched as his X-Force teammates stained themselves physically, emotionally, and spiritually in the blood they spilled and shed for the "greater good." His closest and best friend, Nightcrawler, gave his life protecting the mutant messiah Hope from Bastion during "Second Coming." And in recent months, Wolverine has glimpsed the nightmares that await him in hell after an unnaturally long lifetime of killing, when his soul was sent there prematurely by an organization seeking revenge for loved ones killed by the Wolverine.

Despite all this, Wolverine remains a close and trusted ally, someone that Cyclops can still rely upon to carry out orders with quick and decisive action. But what happens when Cyclops gives an order that Wolverine can't -- or won't -- follow? What happens, when Wolverine no longer believes that the decisions of their leader are still contributing towards the common goals of mutantkind?

"Schism" is the story of what happens when that day comes.

They were never friends, but Logan has come to look at Scott as his general. He's come to respect him much more as a leader these last few years, as Scott has taken control and taken mutants to places they've never been before... Logan has always been the good soldier, sometimes maybe a little bit begrudgingly, but he's always been right by Scott's side and gone out of his way to do everything he could to bring about Scott's vision. Now they find themselves at an impass, and for the first time Logan says no. He feels the train has gone off the tracks.

-Jason Aaron, Writer

WHO ARE THE MAJOR PLAYERS?
==> Real Name: Scott Summers. One of the original X-Men. Currently leader of the X-Men, and unofficially of mutantkind. Fires concussive force beams called "optic blasts" from his eyes, directed through a ruby-quartz visor.

==> Real Name: James "Logan" Howlett. Recruited by Xavier from Canada's Alpha Flight program. Currently leader of secret X-Force team. Possesses heightened senses, retractable claws, and a regenerative "healing factor." Skeleton bonded with unbreakable metal called adamantium.

==> Real Name: Quentin Quire. A student at Xavier's during Morrison's "New X-Men" saga. Leader of the Omega Gang. High-level intellect combined with advanced psychic powers, able to influence and control others. Returns during "Schism" to act as a catalyst for the events that follow.

==> Enormous mutant-hunting robots created by Bolivar Trask. Comes in a variety of models, some more advanced than others. Typically armed with energy beam weapons, flight capabilities, and mutant-detection sensors. Revealed through preview artwork to play a role in "Schism," presumably in a massive coordinated attack on Utopia.

==> Member roster: Hope, Transonic, Velocidad, Primal, Oya, and Zero. Together known as "The Five Lights." Led by Hope Summers, they are the newest generation of mutants, their powers activated after Hope's awakening during "Second Coming." Preview art reveals they play a role, and theirs is the only series to cross directly with "Schism."

==> Founded by Professor Charles Xavier. Tasked with protecting a world that hates and fears them, in the hopes of one day being accepted. Roster and powers vary from member to member. Currently residing on Utopia, an island off the coast of San Francisco created with help of the Atlanteans. It is unknown which members will play a role in "Schism" aside from Cyclops and Wolverine, but the Frank Cho illustration below may give some indication.

From left to right, working from back to front:
Archangel, Mercury, Wolverine, Blindfold, Dazzler, Cannonball, Gambit, Magma, Psylocke, Namor, Sunspot, White Queen, Deadpool, Northstar, Aurora, Rockslide, Graymalkin (thanks 2th!), Colossus, Shadowcat, No-Girl, Lockheed, Dust, Storm, Iceman, Dr. Nemesis, Pixie, Rogue, Warpath, Moonstar, Surge, X-23, Magneto, Magik, Cyclops

WHAT DO I NEED TO READ TO FOLLOW "SCHISM"?
Good news, everyone! Unlike previous or currently running event books coming from Marvel or DC, there's not going to be dozens of "Schism" spinoff comics clogging up the racks at your local comic shop. "Schism" is a self-contained event, five issues long, and the only book tying into it from the current lineup of X- titles is an optional buy -- 'Generation Hope'. That's one comic, maybe two, that you'll need to purchase each month to follow along. And sorry, digital readers, but Marvel hasn't announced they're going day-and-date with this one, so you'll either have to wait or venture outside into the harsh sunlight to buy "Schism."

Now, on the subject of catching up. I've already laid out the basic premise and sequence of events leading up to "Schism," so you should be armed with a general grasp of things, enough to enjoy reading. Beyond that, how far you want to go down the rabbit hole is entirely dependent on two things: how long you've been gone, and how much time/money you're willing to invest. If money is an issue, then sites like Wikipedia and ComicVine can be invaluable resources. If you don't mind spending money, then the timeline I made for "Second Coming" holds up pretty well as a buyer's guide for graphic novels. And don't forget about Marvel's limited-time offer of one free month of its online digital comics service; it's a great way to catch up on important storylines for virtually nothing, and the paid service is a great deal as well.

Just remember though: "Schism" isn't a story about the past, it's a story about charting the future of the X-Men. As always, my advice is to READ FIRST, AND IF YOU LIKE IT THEN START BUYING BACKISSUES.

["Schism" is] ...a continuation of a lot of things that have been going on in the X-Men Universe for a while now. After "House of M" this is going to be the next big step for the X-Verse. There will be threads from a lot of the X-Books, but I also think it will be a book that you can pick up and understand the big events that unfold, and the reasons why they unfold are right there in the book.

WHAT WILL BE THE RAMIFICATIONS OF SCHISM"?
Well, for starters, how about this?

Marvel has recently announced that, following the conclusion of "Schism," the long-running series 'Uncanny X-Men' will end with issue #544, and be replaced thereafter with two new series: 'Uncanny X-Men' by Kieron Gillen and Greg Land, and 'Wolverine and the X-Men' by Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo. Together these two books will chronicle the aftermath of the mutant breakup, with Gillen's 'Uncanny' focusing on those who sided with Cyclops, and Aaron's obviously covering those taking up with Wolverine. And both writers have emphasized in interviews that this is a true and genuine split, with no fencesitters pulling double-duty on both rosters; "Schism" has been structured so that EVERY mutant is going to have to choose a side.

And while "Schism" is not directly crossing over with any of the current X- titles except 'Generation Hope', its effects will be tremendous and far reaching, and will result in long-lasting consequences for ALL books in the current lineup in the months to follow. Marvel's intention is for "Schism" to lay the groundwork for a major shakeup of the X-Men family of comics, and to lead directly into next summer's major Marvel event.

Schism will affect pretty much every X-book. Rippling out from that, going forward we'll see how it affects the entire Marvel Universe in a profound way. Certainly the entire Marvel Universe has been watching what's been going on in the X-universe for a while now, much of it with trepidation When thy see what happens in Schism, they've got to be getting a little more antsy. For the longest time, the X-Men kind of existed in their own little corner of the Marvel Universe. They handled their business over there, everybody else handles their business over here. We will definitely see that change. The X-Men will be thrust back into the midst of the Marvel Universe again.

-Jason Aaron, Writer

WHOSE SIDE AM I SUPPOSED TO BE ON?
See, that's just it -- there is no right or wrong side. According to "Schism" writer Jason Aaron, one of the ways this event will distinguish itself from "Civl War" (aside from involving mutants, of course) is that neither side can be clearly judged to be wrong. This is not going to be another case of friends finding themselves on opposite sides of the law, with each seeing themselves as "right" and their opposite number "wrong" and therefore as villains. There is no villain here, where Cyclops and Wolverine are concerned; there is only two men with identical goals, who by the end of this event will differ greatly on how they would achieve that goal. That fundamental difference, tragically, will tear the X-Men apart and force everyone to take sides, but at the end of the day Aaron promises that BOTH men present solid, sustainable cases for their methods.

It's that ambiguity that will separate "Schism" from past events.

I've even felt divided writing this story. I can see the strengths and weaknesses in both Cyclops' and Wolverine's arguments. When we first started talking about this story at one of the X-retreats we realized that we just got hung up arguing one side against the other. We had people in the room divided. Some of us thought, 'Why would this happen? This seems to be the right way.' Others felt the opposite. I think that means we're onto something. If we can't even get all these people in the room to agree on which side is right and which side is wrong, hopefully readers will be torn as well. We're creating a sticky situation here. It's not a black and white.

-Jason Aaron, Writer

...OKAY, BUT WHOSE SIDE AM I SUPPOSED TO BE ON?
*sigh*

Fine, here.

And in case I haven't whet your appetite just yet, here's an unfinished page from issue #5 by Adam Kubert, that's sure to get mouths drooling.

*SPOILER ALERT*

Now that's an OT. And that's an interesting sounding plot too.

THINGS THIS THREAD TAUGHT ME ABOUT THE X-MEN

1) Rogue's tits.
2) Emma Frost's X-Men name is White Queen. Huh.
3) Sentinels come in all shapes and sizes.
4) Magneto looks moody as all hell, cool
5) Rouge's tits. Seriously what is up with that

And yeah, I guess I'll have to side with Wolverine. Cyclops has too lame a costume to be allowed to lead any longer.

I thought she was always hot. Its just that touching her could kill you. Rogue will most likely end up with the side Hope is on anyways.

Anyone that was following xmen knew this would happen eventually.

Any spoiler on just what it is that causes the split between the two?
Nope, nor is it any one glaring and immediate "eureka!" moment according to interviews.

[Jason Aaron:] ...The first couple of issues of Schism give us a couple of incidents that really shows how this rift starts to form, and things start to unravel along the way. We throw around the phrase, as X-Men writers, “they fight to protect a world that hates and fears them.” And Scott says, we kind of use that phrase to death, until we kind of forget what it actually means. By the end of Schism #1, the X-Men are faced with exactly what that means, to have the whole world hate and fear you. It’s a tense situation, and we start to see cracks show being Scott and Logan for different reasons.
"Their relationship is not hanging by a thread when we start off...they're pretty rock solid," Aaron said. "Over the course of 'Schism,' something happens that makes Logan say 'We're not on the same page anymore."

Alonso said that an event will take the X-Men to an edge that their leaders will be split on whether they will cross, but it's not as clear cut as "One will kill and one won't" but a much more subtle thing. He likened it to "Civil War" in that regard. "These are two guys caught up in a moral quagmire, so readers will be able to pick sides," said Aaron.

Will drop pants for Sony.
Couldn't Professor X just jump in a tell them to cut the crap he is now in charge? Man, I don't even recognize the x-men anymore. I thought Colossus was with Magneto and ArchAngel was Angel now... oh man head hurts.

Everytime I see a comic (not a reader), the cleavages are getting lower and the boobs are getting bigger. I get the art style but getting a bit ridiculous now; if I was a kid my mother would never have let me read them if she saw these images, thinking it would was some kind of soft porn. But Schism sounds really interesting. Will get.

Comes from her time as a member of the Hellfire Club, who took codenames from chess. She just kept it after she left the group, AFAIK.

I'm with Wolverine. That contestable, stick-up-the-ass boyscout Cyclops can sit on one of Wolvy's claws and spin for all I care. ;p

Scored 3/100 on an Exam
They promised that both sides will have "equal arguments" and that no side will be good or bad with Civil War, see how that turned out. It sounds like Cyclops' side might be the one going "the ends justify the means" which is obviously the "bad" side.

Without knowing the details of their falling out, I just have to say that the major players of this series are ill chosen. It should be a shism between the "whatever it takes approach" of Cyclops and the "moral approach" of Storm. And to blame is, obviously, Wolverine's popularity.

Having said that, I hope to be proven wrong.

It's just that Wolverine works much better as a side-character. Just as Jack Sparrow should never be forced into the role of protagonist.

PS: I do hope Gambit will get something to do in this storyline.

wolverine has become a much better written character over the years. his birthday outing with spiderman really showed his potential in the right hands, while storm git screwed by being caught in reggir hudlins web and as such becoming a side character married to black panther.

I really liked Rogues red costume. It was my favorite since the mutant massacre/Australia times. I like her new one a lot though, and the hoodie one before this one.
Seriously, Storm should have been starting shit with Cyclops a while ago.
