Today Show Thinks Adult Gamers Are Weird

Dudes who play video games in their 30s and beyond? What’s up with that?! That’s the question posed to the leathery co-hosts of the fourth hour of Today, Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb, who explain that, well, that’s just weird!

Gifford, Kotb and advertising exec/dude advice giver Donny Deutsch – author of The Big Idea: How to Make Your Entrepreneurial Dreams Come True, From the Aha Moment to Your First Million – dispensed the following advice to someone concerned whether it’s “OK for men to play video games in their 30s and over”.

“No, that’s weird,” Gifford says, adding “Xbox.”

“No. The answer’s no,” contributes Deutsch, “When you’re in your 30s, there should be something more on your mind, your attention, than video games.”

Gifford and Deutsch apparently agree that it’s perfectly fine to play them with your kids, with Kotb clarifying that “those weird ones in the basement”, that’s a no-no.

The Entertainment Software Association reports that the average game player is 37 years old, the average age of the most frequent game purchaser is 41 years old, and that 29 per cent of Americans over the age of 50 play video games.

So, there you go, adults past your 20s. You’re a cellar-dwelling weirdo. Now you know.

Bugger, I'll only be able to game for another 6.5 years.

These idiots are obviously too old to be saying stuff about this. We grew up with this, therefore it'll likely be part of our lives forever. I'm sure females our age who also grew up with video games will understand.

Gaming is here to stay. The generation that grew up with Atari and NES will be gaming until the day they die, and the same goes for every generation thereafter.

I've called my girlfriend, asked her opinion on this, she laughed out loud, then told me she was OK with it just so she got more gametime in.

Screw you Kathie Lee Gifford!

Women getting dating and relationship advice from the Today Show, Tyra Banks, and other shit is like the equivalence of men getting dating and relationship advice from AskMen.com.

I like the "mind should be on other things"'part. What "other things"? Like every male older than 29 should all have the exact same goals/hobbies. They're just mad because they are shallow, boring people who never get to do cool shit, like playing games and not giving a fuck what television hacks think.

Good luck with that.

Yes. Like Sex & The City. Grey's Anatomy. Desperate Housewives. As The World Turns. The Bold And The Beautiful. Shopping. All perfect examples of how women lead by example.

Yup. It's one of the reasons I find people like this so entertaining. I wonder if people who grew up with silent films felt the same way about talkies.

Need to look at this guys credentials. Probably a bunch of bullshit pop psychology. That shit gives psychologists as a whole a bad name.

Hey, you don't see me bitching at grown ass men and women who sit on Facebook for hours each day tending their virtual farms. My sister, who is 40, married with a kid occasionally wakes up in the middle of the night to hop on Facebook and "feed her fish."

So shut the fuck up, Kathie Lee.

Sorry babe. No gaming, no you.

Not because gaming is *that* important to me... but because anyone that close minded will not make a good match for me.

I would worship Kathy Lee's feet. I'd be her slave sucking her toes and have her walk on me.

I used to fap to her pictures in Woman's Weekly back in the 90's.

Sorry but if you like the type of play you got in the arcades or on the NES you're screwed these days.
I'm more talking about new release though, doesn't stop people that liked these types of games from playing said games.

I don't agree with her (obviously, I'm in a gaming forum) but I think there is still the idea that video gamers are socially awkward nerds who sit around all day in their mom's basements and do nothing but play video games.

I can see why from a non-gamer would see that as a bad thing if they were uninformed. It's like that for a lot of nerdy hobbies - comic books, Warhammer, anime, manga etc.

I can't lie. I generally don't tell people I play video games as a hobby and I'm the nerdiest of all gaming nerds - I exclusively play PC games (haven't touched a console since the Sega Saturn). Also, despite my large Steam library, I feel like it would be disingenuous to tell people I'm a gamer because I don't have time to play games like I used to.

At least once a month there are people in the gaming section complaining that they're losing interest in the medium.

That said, I don't really know how one can "grow out of" gaming. Its like implying that someone can grow out of books or television. You can lose interest in certain games, but not the whole medium. I think that more people are losing interest though because the industry seems to be getting dominated by shooters and simulation games. Those who are losing interest may be more interested in platformers, action games, fighting games etc.

Why are you limiting video games to arcade-style games? Video games are getting more popular, reaching a wider audience, and branching in unexpected directions. Mario can stand beside Angry Birds, Farmville, Scrabble and all the rest. It doesn't matter which specific games you like, just about everyone is playing something, and that's only going to grow as technology becomes more common.

local multiplayer kinda sucks now so i mostly play board games instead :p

The irony of this is that those "experts" are probably going to be on the losing side of the argument as time marches on.

Well, at least they'll slowly destroy their own shallow influence on society without us having to lift a finger or press a button.

I was just introduced to Telephone Pictionary. Next these people will be telling me that men can't play that amazing game, either.

Don't put words in my mouth, I'm only talking of people who like gaming as it was before the whole cinematic crap came. It's not a question of whether or not they can coexist, it's a question of they're not making these games anymore with rare exceptions.

Reading gaf on my phone so I didn't even notice it was Donny douche. The guy knows nothing about relationships or gaming other than some bullshit stats. Pop psych wins the day cause the mindless masses eat it up though.

Cinematic crap? Do you mean games like Mass Effect, Call of Duty, Uncharted, and other big-budget games? Because there are a lot more games that aren't in that mold (anything downloadable, indie, or mobile) than are.

Oh this, so hard. Socially acceptable trivial shit is fine!

My gf couldn't give 2 shits, she actually works in gaming (mobile side, marketing) but as I am 31 I feel I can say "bullshit" to them.

I have friends older than me with several kids who still get time to play games when they can.

The opinions of out of touch, shallow old women who think all men should fit into their narrow view.

Playing videogames is no more juvenile than going shopping, or consumerism in general. Good luck telling women that that is unacceptable after age 30, however lol.

What do they think should be on my mind besides videogames or whatever else I so choose?

haha yeah that's a fun game, especially when you've got a big group of people

Actually I meant crap like the stuffs we used to get with big cinematic at the beginning and crap gameplay in between but I can use your definition too.
And if you know where I can find games that don't control like shit and are closer to your usual sidescroller be my guest.
