Which one of GAF's self-proclaimed PC gamers has the worst rig?

Ever since my 360 died a couple years ago I've been playing games on my PC pretty much exclusively even though I have a Wii and PS3.

However, my "gaming" rig is pretty turrible by today's standards.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 5600+ @ 2.9 GHz
ATI HD Radeon 4670 1GB
4GB DDR2 667 RAM

Surprisingly, The Witcher 2 is the first and only game that I deem virtually unplayable because it taxes my PC that much. But I know it'll only get worse from here on out.

I'm sure one of you has a much worse PC, though. Interested in seeing the results.
 
This might as well turn into a "What are your specs thread" ... which makes me wonder why there isn't one.

There's quite a lot of people in the Steam threads with modest rigs, from what I've seen.

Good proof that you don't need a super rig to be a PC gamer, I think!

But I wouldn't give away my super rig for the world. >_>

256mb x1600xt

Yes, I played Crysis on this thing a few years ago. It was actually fine! All low settings at a low res, but the ultra ninja gameplay held up perfectly. Portal2 was great on it, but I think that will probably be the last big PC release I play on this machine.

You beat my last rig. Up until about two months ago, I had a 3.0ghz C2D, Radeon 4850, 4 gigs of ram.

Not really a powerhouse by any means:

X2-7750 (2.8Ghz), 4GB, 512MB 4830, and the other usual fixings (although I have upwards of 6TB of drive space. don't ask).

It did, however, only cost me $500 three years ago, which was my goal at the time. I'm tempted to do the $500 PC thing again this fall because it's worked out relatively well.
 
I consider myself a PC gamer in spirit, even though I mainly play games on the console, partly because my rig is underpowered

E6420 @ 2.13 GHz (because when I overclock it to 2.8 GHz it gets too hot)

Bought this computer not intending to use it as a gaming PC. Ended up just upgrading my GPU and it has worked out pretty well for me so far luckily. :]

I can run SF4 at 60fps if I turn almost everything low and turn off the backgrounds! The Witcher is also somewhat playable at around 30fps.


But these games make my usually silent macbook book howl with hot air that I can feel on my fingertips. There are what appear to be brownish discolorations from this on the inside case, so I don't really play intense games on it anymore.

Yeah, if you're gonna game on an MBP you really need to maximize cooling. Back when Burnout Paradise hit steam I played that shit like 40 hours a week. I set my computer on top of an upside down iron skillet. It worked wonders, I went from overheating shutdowns every 45 minutes to perfectly stable for hours and hours and hours.

Right now I have this little wooden stand thing that I built so it has tons and tons of airflow.

has been a nice stable rig for 3 years now, looking to update in the next year or so.

plays pretty much everything but quad core hungry games @ 1920x1080 & ~60fps

I recently upgraded from a PC that was near identical to this. It ran everything at playable rates, usually the only thing I wouldnt turn all the way up was AA and AF. There were a few exceptions like Witcher 2. Would've taken a lot of turning down settings to get Witcher 2 playable. Some others were close to that area of unplayability like Crysis and Borderlands but I managed to run those at what I would consider playable rates.

On the plus side, it handled all of the multiplayer games i play regularly like tf2 and css with ease.

I want an SSD. To the ppl that have one, how much of a diff does it make?

I have enough RAM and the video card is pretty fast, but my CPU is now five years old and is beginning to bottleneck me.
 
i7 950, 6GB of DD3, MSI 460 GTX Hawk Talon Attack (horrible name, but has a high factory overclock and a Twin Frozr II cooler), and some western digital 1TB hard drive.

Only thing I see myself upgrading anytime soon is the video card. Waiting on a nice midrange card on whatever new architecture amd or nvidia have coming out.

3.0 GHz e8400 (want to upgrade to an i5 eventually, I think)
ATI 5850, stock (may try nVidia next since games always seem to work better?)

Uh...7200 rpm 650-ish GB hard disk?

What I really DO like about the 5850 is that it has actually been reasonably fast, quiet, AND reasonably cool, without me having to use aftermarket fans and so forth. My 4850 before this was super loud.
 
when my PS3 and notebook died on the same day last summer I bought :

got a GTX 480 a month later, Sandy Bridge in January, then finished a new watercooled casemod last month ... and I thought I had dropped this addiction 3 years ago by getting a notebook lol

ow FYI, Mafia II was unplayable with the 7900GT at lowest res minimal settings on that rig, it runs 60 fps with some dips with 1080p max except Physx when I put in the GTX480, and runs constant 60 at 1080p max everything with the 2600K
 
4870X2, Q9550 @ 3.4 GHz and 4GB of RAM.

Still pretty solid system overall, but I've been starting to think of getting a new system since my kid brother is looking to get a system that one can actually play recent games on. So I could dump my current one on him and get a completely new rig - maybe with a 120Hz monitor and the 3d vision kit.

Speaking of which - not that I've really looked into 3D gaming yet - but afaik AMD still doesn't have an equivalent to nvidia's 3D vision, does it?
 
TF2 says my video card is out of date and I only ever managed to load one game(the tutorial). So that's pretty bad right?

You probably have Intel integrated graphics.

My current rig is a bit of a monster cause I have a job to afford it now, but back when I was in school my rig was shockingly awful.

I bought this in mid 2005 (for BF2) and used it up until late 2009.

Pentium 4 3Ghz (775 socket)
1GB DDR400 (upgraded to 2)
Nvidia 6600GT 128MB DDR3 (pci-e!!!!!!)
17" 1280x1024 LCD Monitor

Even though I bought a 360 in 2007 I still spent most of my gaming time on that old trusty thing, playing CS:S mostly.
