To The Moon (PC) [Update: Release date Nov. 1, new trailer, OST]

Indie developer Kan Gao of Freebird Games is working on a very cool-looking JRPG-style adventure called To the Moon, and has released a debut trailer that does a great job capturing the emotional resonance his high-concept story is trying to achieve. To the Moon tells the story of Johnny--a man in the twilight of his life--and the two scientists who embark on a journey to alter Johnny's memories in an effort to help him realize an unfulfilled wish before he passes on.

Looks very promising and just by looking at the trailer it seems like they nailed the emotional aspect of it. Will probably buy it day one. :)

is there something to actually play gameplay-wise or is it just a series of really awkwardly animated low fi melodrama the whole time?

The trailer does look gorgeous, definitely more in line with the understated storytelling method of Mother 3 than the overwrought beats of Eternal Sonata.

I wonder what the "gameplay" portion will consist of, or if it will just be brave enough to have a semi-interactive story that you can explore and maybe make a few branching decisions with.

If the trailer really is evocative of the full game, I'll definitely support it for the sheer sake of letting the concept of visual novels gain any ground whatsoever outside of Asia.

The sprite art is beautiful, really reminds me of Chrono Trigger, but it looks like it's all original work, so I mean that as a compliment.

As long as the price isn't unreasonable, I plan to pick it up.

Looks gorgeous with those sounds, sounds gorgeous with that music! Just curious about the actual gameplay, or as mentioned, is it just more of a visual novel. Looks interesting for sure.

Laura Shigihara is also doing the music - same person that did the tunes for Plants vs Zombies. So that's pretty snazzy.

When you come to Japan, please avoid the section of the game store marked as Adventure.

The game I'm not sure on yet (it looks like typical genenric RPG maker graphics too).

But the music- OMFG- that music- omfg

Well I am interested.

EDIT:
The technology requires the doctors to step into the memories of the patient, which are reconstructed as interactive scenes. The doctors then gradually traverse backwards through memories of the patient's life until they reach childhood -- at which point, the wish of the patient in present time would be transferred over.

Along with the doctors' influence, the patient (as a child) could then lead an entire different life inside their head, working toward and fulfilling their dying wish themselves.

And if all goes well, they would wake up, having lived the dream life they never had, and embrace a brief moment of blissful fulfillment.

Shortly after, they'd draw their last breath.

Yeah the game is going to be pretty sad.

This looked awfully familiar until I realised this is the same guy who made The Mirror Lied, I kinda liked that one so I'll probably check this out too.

Maybe she's just credited for the theme song where it sounds like her singing :(. It'd be neat if she had more songs than that though, Plant VS Zombies had amazing music.

Good trailer. Definitely checking this out upon release. Moon / Space is cool stuff. Someone ought to page Chris Remo.

Released today. Played it for about one hour and I like it so far. The concept is interesting, story seems good, characters don't annoy me and there's some decent humour in the dialog. The music is really beautiful, but that's no surprise after seeing the trailer. Thus far it's pretty much exactly what I was expecting. Looking forward to spending more time with it.

I've just finished the game and couldn't find the other thread about it - it's incredible. It's so clever, so thoughtful, extremely funny and also heartbreaking. There are some scenes in particular, which I won't even put in spoilers here, that really upset me.

More of you need to buy this game!

So, I decided to give this a shot. I'm about 1 hour into the game and I must say it's pretty great.

If you have played The Mirror Lied (or even "watched" Do You Remember My Lullaby), you know what to expect: some sort of RPG/Adventure game with a sad, charming and emotive (even somewhat weird) story, awesome music and great retro graphics (for being a game made with RPG Maker, I'm quite impressed).

So, yeah, grab it. It's awesome. It's somewhat sad this isn't on Steam or something like that, so a lot more people know about it.

Unfortunately, the RGSS Player (engine) uses all kinds of proprietary Windows stuff (IIRC it uses DirectDraw and GDI+ for graphics). I don't know how it would perform under WINE, though - I haven't tried it in years.

I enjoy games like Call of Duty and Uncharted but i really wish more developers were able to make games that go into this medium and theme. It seems every game nowadays is trying to emulate a michael bay film. I hope in the future there are more games like this because i plan on playing those games. Thank you Freebird games.
