Airs Wednesdays @ 10, beginning October 5

Synopsis | American Horror Story, co-created by former Nip/Tuck executive producers and current Glee co-creators/executive producers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, revolves around The Harmons, a family of three who move from Boston to Los Angeles as a means to reconcile past anguish, involving a miscarriage and infidelity. They move into a home where... well, it's a horror story. What do you think will happen?

If you'd like a more detailed synopsis (slightly spoilery, but not too much, it gives a good overview of the show), please read this page:

American Horror Story stars Dylan McDermott, Connie Britton, and Jessica Lange.

I'm in love with the slutty maid. Though she seems to be simultaneously old and young, so... probably wouldn't work out.

I'm actually very interested in this show if it's anything like the first season of Nip/Tuck. If it's anything like the later seasons of Nip/Tuck then count me out. It's a show that is going to walk a dangerous line of being compelling or being too ridiculous.

Nice thread! This is one of the new shows I really want to watch. As silly as it got in later seasons, I still managed to watch Nip/Tuck through to the end.

I'm kind of digging the red headed woman in this. She's kind of sexy. :)

I don't see much chemistry between McDermott and his supposed on-screen wife, Britton. But maybe that's part of the plot?

Also, ugh, Ryan Murphy? I *loathe* Glee but here's hoping that somehow he's a better writer for genre stories than for drama.

First 2 seasons of nip/tuck were awesome.
Everything else Ryan Murphy has done is terrible.
Ill at least watch the Pilot

Nope, Popular was great. But it only was two seasons.

If someone showed me the entire premise to this show, that it was a dark psychological horror story told over one season, that it was inspired by Rosemary's Baby, then told me Connie Britton was in it, I'd be fucking sold.
Murphy/Falchuk significantly lowers my expectations. I'm watching anyway.

Chris Eggertsen from HitFix talks a little about the first two episodes:

American Horror Story

"A couple of months ago I attended a screening of the show's two-hour-long pilot episode, which I enjoyed despite its essential flaws.

Deviating from the general consensus, I actually enjoyed the pilot. It wasn't great television, per se, but a lot of "guilty pleasure" fun nonetheless. A lot happens in the episode, to be sure - perhaps a bit too much (an oft-stated criticism I basically agree with) - but it transfixed me in the way I'm transfixed by the sight of a horrific multiple-car wreck on the 405 freeway. Murphy has never been known for his subtlety as either a storyteller or a visual stylist (he also directed the pilot) but he damn well knows how to pull an audience in. Whether he can sustain that over an ongoing series is the real question.

The second episode doesn't resolve that uncertainty, though I didn't really expect it to. That said, while I found it a tad less-intriguing than the pilot, I must admit that it still managed to sustain my interest - if only to see where Murphy and Falchuk can possibly take the show from here.

This time around - probably due to the fact that the episode is 42 minutes vs. the pilot's 90 - the plot was less all-over-the-place..."

He also has a talk with Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk in which they (lol) discuss the show.

They revealed that after they showed the pilot to critics, they went back and added/removed some things to let it breathe a little more. One of the chief complaints that critics had was that it seemed too packed with stuff, so I think that's a promising sign.

I'd consider Glee an American horror story.

Poor Connie. You're better than this.

That's quite dismissive of you. The first two seasons of Nip/Tuck were incredible. Ryan Murphy might have created Glee, but maybe you're not the intended audience.

It should also be noted that this is an FX original and their shows have a great track record.

I still weep over Terriers.

They were not incredible. They were okay. And then it got terrible.

So I'm sure American Horror Story will get off to a solid start, but then it will inevitably devolve into a pool of stupidity. Because Ryan Murphy is a terrible showrunner.

I like the lead actor (huge PRACTICE fan). I have low expectations for this. Horror can't be done episodic over numerous eps so this will be padded out and boring in chunks.

Nip/Tuck started off great. S1+2 were great. Then it devolved into latino criminals (and later latino crime lord ghosts as he returns for cameos) and abject stupidity. When the son fell in love with the jean grey transexual; they really had no where else to go.

I thought this was gonna be like a different story every ep:( well I'll still watch the pilot.
Different story every season, I believe. I guess technically that could mean (some) of the same cast every year, but it should be an all new story each year.

Alan Sepinwall: D-

That's "American Horror Story" in a nutshell. It has pretensions of depth and ambition, but really all it's about is whatever cool thing Murphy and Falchuk wanted to do next, hurled at the screen with such reckless abandon that none of it works.

If this is the level of crazy where "American Horror Story" starts at, the only genuinely scary thing about the show is trying to imagine where its creators will take it a year or two from now.

I can't wait. No sarcasm.

Expected. Maureen Ryan also has some comments in a non review:

The members of the troubled Harmon family, who arrive in L.A. after a series of personal setbacks back in Boston, don't particularly resemble real people and often don't react to the bizarre events that happen to them in ways recognizably human characters would react.

I'm guessing more thought went into the choice of lighting fixtures for the Harmon house than will ever go into the construction of the show's overall narrative.

Edit: One more:

As is the case in 'Glee,' characters here forget what they want or what they've done to each other whenever it's convenient for the show: continuity schmontinuity.

Yeeesh.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY DRINKING GAME

http://www.aoltv.com/2011/10/05/american-horror-story-drinking-game/

Take a sip/gulp/shot every time:
• A young girl says, "You're going to die in there!"
• You cringe from the sight of something preserved in a gross jar
• A random person who is not one of the Harmons materializes in their house
• Dylan McDermott shows off his backside
• Somebody is wearing a hat
• Somebody is being a peeping tom
• Somebody wearing a hat is being a peeping tom (Double drink!)
• You wonder why the Harmons didn't Google the address of their new house
• Jessica Lange suddenly appears
• Somebody is touching themselves
• A strobe light is used
• You want to save Connie Britton from this mess
• You find yourself saying "Why?" out loud
• It makes you think "I'd have moved the hell out already!"
• You discover that you're more emotionally invested in the house than in any of the characters
• You wonder what needs to be done to stop Ryan Murphy

My roommate went to buy a case of beer.

- Onion A|V Club review
And yet there’s the fact that everybody who’s into TV should watch at least the pilot. It’s rare to have a show this poorly judged come along, rare to have a show this ambitious fail quite this much. Most TV failures are failures of non-ambition, shows content to just settle in and be something you’ve seen a million times before and bring nothing new to the table. That can’t be said of American Horror Story, a series that’s deliberate in its attempts to provoke you and get a reaction out of you—to the point where it seems like any reaction from revulsion to laughter will do.

D
I kind of want to watch just because it sounds like a complete train wreck. It's going to make me sad when this does well in the ratings unlike a few other recent FX shows.

Wow, some rough reviews there. I'm still going to tune in tonight, I'm too curious about the show to not watch it.

Recording. We'll see how it stacks up, I guess. Show has more positive reviews than negatives, and I don't let the AV Club determine my opinions.

I really don't know why I'm going to watch this show. Ryan Murphy, terrible reviews...I'm not excited at all. But I still want to watch. What kind of sorcery is this?

It looks interesting, and reviews can be shit?

Just check it out if it intrigues you on some level. I, on the other hand, won't be watching because I let the AV Club determine my opinions.

Gonna watch tonight. Stills and the trailer look good. Reviews are all over the place, ranging from amazing to terrible. So this must be a love it or hate it show?

That can be a recipe for greatness, but also a harbinger of season 1 cancellation. At the same time.

Well, right. It does look unlike anything else on TV. Reviews can be, and a lot of times are, wrong. I'm more basing my hesitation on Ryan Murphy's horrid track record, and the comparisons to Glee.

Haha. As a rule, when I pick up a show, I stick with it for the long haul. I'm very particular about which shows I pick up, so I usually try to take in as much external input as possible. So far, everyone is saying how awful AHS is, but I'm still drawn to it.

Worst case scenario, you love it and it gets dropped. If it's shit at least you can move on.

I generally give shitty shows several seasons to win me over. If it's irredeemable shit, for multiple seasons, then I'll drop it.

Totally Rad Show reviewed it

Here

Jeff Cannata loved it. He compared it to Twin Peaks and says 60% of people will hate it, but 40% will love it.

Alex Albrecht loved it too.

(Dan Trachtenberg was absent :( )

They both raved about it, and called it the best new show this Fall.

It's quite surprising that they're the lone source of positivity for this show.

You assholes.

The point of this show is to teach kids about the paranormal. If you don't support this show, you don't support paranormal education in public schools.

It's as simple as that.

I'm conflicted on whether or not I want this to succeed. On one hand, its success would bring in money for FX to keep shows with middling ratings on the air, and it would hopefully improve Glee while Murphy and Falchuk are distracted by their shiny new toy. But then it also takes up a spot in FX's schedule that could be used for better shows (keep in mind that this is essentially FX's replacement for Terriers). I guess I'm fine either way it goes.
