6½ Years Later: The PSP Appreciation & Software Recommendation Thread

Edit: Can we keep Custom Firmware talk out of this thread please? I want to hear about your experience with genuine PSP software, not about all the consoles you can emulate.

There's a separate thread for that. Discuss it there. Not here.

So, we're roughly two days away from the 6 and a half year anniversary of the launch of the PSP in the US, so I thought now's an appropriate time to have a little retrospective thread.

So hey, what's your history with the system?

I initially had plans this generation of sticking with just portable game systems. Between the DS' unique titles due to its hardware, Nintendo's first party lineup and the PSP's more console-esque titles I figured I'd be able to last the generation satisfied. And looking back on it, I more than easily could have been; there was easily enough software between the two products for an entire generation of great gaming.

Unfortunately I decided to get a CompUSA credit card and bought a TV and a Wii with the leftover credit, and then later bought a 20GB 360 on sale at CompUSA's closure, so that plan went out the window faster than I had hoped.

I bought a PSP-1000 in late August 2006 at Circuit City, primarily due to this particular deal here. $159.99 for the hardware was too good of a deal to pass up, and on top of that, Circuit City was offering a free game out of a small selection. I picked up Wipeout and I was good to go.

At the time I was working at CompUSA, and I actually applied their in-store product protection plan on the PSP I bought at Circuit City. Thankfully I did, because I started having issues with the face buttons a little over a year later in late 2007, which allowed me to upgrade to the PSP-2000, as the 1000 had since been retired.

The PSP-3000 I purchased in early February of 2010, as Gamestop was running a trade-in deal, and I really wanted the White PSP that was released with the Assassin's Creed bundle the holiday season prior. Considering how difficult that particular bundle became to find locally not long after purchase, I'm glad I did when I did.

I bought a PSP Go later that year in July when Amazon put 'em on sale and I had a bunch of credit through them to blow. Great system, easily my favorite of the bunch due to its smaller size and increased portability.

What's your favorite game(s) for the PSP?

3S2xG.jpg

Easily my favorite of the system's library, Gitaroo Man Lives scratched my itch for an excellent rhythm/music game like it hadn't been scratched since 2002's Space Channel 5 Part 2. I've never owned a PS2 so I never experienced this gem before, and it became the perfect portable analog to the DS' Ouendan and Elite Beat Agent titles.

dFs0v.jpg

As noted in the above, I've never owned a PS2, but I've played the Katamari series on friends and families consoles. In fact I was instrumental on introducing my then girlfriend to the series, as I bought her both the original game and its sequel at their release, considering their budget price at released. I loved the game, so Me & My Katamari was my first purchase when I bought my PSP, as I was excited to finally be able to play it on my own time. The game didn't disappoint. Even considering the lack of a second analog stick, I found that the PSP D-Pad and face buttons did an adequate job of controller my Katamari and everything that stuck to it.

AMluq.jpg

As mentioned prior, Space Channel 5 Part 2 is one of my favorite games and after playing Rez, I was super-excited at anything Q Entertainment would possibly put out in the future. Considering Lumines release, at the time I was assuming that the PSP would be the best bet for a Rez sequel or side story. Well, that didn't happen, but we did get Every Extend Extra. What a fun little puzzle/shooter game. Great music, great visuals, great gameplay, all around great game. I didn't dig the later XBLA release for some reason, but I still come back to Every Extend Extra every now and again.

Other favorite titles include Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure, a cutesy Zelda-esque adventure game, Megaman: Powered Up and Megaman X: Maverick Hunter, fantastic remakes of the original Megaman and Megaman X titles, Lumines, possibly the best puzzle game since Panel de Pon, Patapon, a great little rhythm game from Sony, and Loco Roco, possibly the weirdest game ever made.

I own more, but that's my favorites. I've recently been playing my PSP after it's collected dust for about nine months, and I want to round out my library a bit while there's still a little bit of a selection left at retail stores, so I'd love to hear some recommendations of what's the must-have of the system library.

So that's about it. What's your story?

Edit: Can we keep Custom Firmware talk out of this thread please? I want to hear about your experience with genuine PSP software, not about all the consoles you can emulate.

There's a separate thread for that. Discuss it there. Not here.

Arguably the best ever but not really when next to DS. Best handheld not from Nintendo? Yes!

It's been great on so many fronts.

I know we started off with ports but Ridge Racers is still one of the best launch titles ever. Ape Escape had not so good load times but was faithful. Lumines is still going now and a new on will launch with VITA.

The later years really started bringing out the JRPG's and nifty indie like games. It's gone from being perceived to be a portable PS2 to really carving its own niche. I think this growth and expansion of those principles will be good for VITA.

I can't say I've played a bad game that I haven't researched. I know, boo me :P

I bought PSP in December 2005, my first game was Metal Gear Acid which I still have today. In March 2006 PSP became DJ Max machine, and I played every single DJ Max title since. Also a lot of other games. Spent a lot more time with PSP than with DS, can't wait for Vita!

US release date was March 24, 2005.

Bought my PSP 3 years ago and had one ever since. I originally had a Phat-100 model, but it broke when I accidentally leaned on it. Used it as an MP3 player for a few months because I couldn't see the screen to play games or watch videos, and got a 200 model a while later.

Favorite games are (in alphabetical order):

Call of Duty: Road to Victory
Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness
Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days
Disgaea Infinite
Gods Eater BURST
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories
Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure
Lumines
Phantasy Star Portable 2
Rock Band: Unplugged
Valkyria Chronicles II
Ys SEVEN
Ys: the Oath in Felghana
Z.H.P.: Unlosing Ranger VS. Darkdeath Evilman

Currently playing and still need to finish:

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable
The Legend of Heroes: Trials in the Sky

Games I still need to buy/ waiting for:

Corpse Party
Grand Knights History
Hakuoki

Wow 6 years...

Got in Christmas 05 with Medievil ( which was criminally underrated in my opinion )

Had a lot of fun with it, my favourite game is one people won't agree with but it was so fun;

Saw that P3 was on sale on PSN last week. Regret not buying it when I could.

If you like JRPG`s,there`s a little gem of a game, one of the first, that I enjoyed called Popolocrois....also try and find a copy of Dugeon Siege, quite good.

I had a coworker/friend at CompUSA that heaved a shitload of praise on that game back in 2005. He was instrumental in me picking up a PSP to begin with.

I just managed to get a PSP from my friend a few months ago. He found a white darth vader PSP slim on the side of the road and had been holding on to it for years. I actually had a PSP charger (same plug as my old MP3 player) and it actually still worked!

The volume up button didn't work so I had to order and install a few button strip and the screws were rusted so the plastic threads got messed up getting those out, but it works perfectly now and I'm playing through Marvel Ultimate Alliance right now. I wish Loco Roco 1 on the PSN store was cheaper; it's still $21 or something like that! I could get it cheaper retail, but I want to see that game on the Vita when I get one of those. *drool*

The ghosting on the PSP 2000's screen is worse than I remember, but it's not a complete deal breaker. The Disc slot is loud as hell (unsurprising giving that it was found in a ditch), but there are only one or two games that I want that are disc exclusive (Marvel UA, and Kingdom Hearts) and I just bought a bigger memory stick.

Because I had still had an old PSN account I was even able to get those 2 free PSP games a few months ago and was able to re-download Wipe-out. :D

I have CFW and i use it with genuine PSP software. No need to be all rude like that.

Tactics Ogre is the greatest handheld game ever made, so that'd be my number one choice. PSP is easily my favorite handheld, so versatile and finally no settling for less just because it's a handheld. Refreshing. Too bad the sales held it back from its ultimate potential.

1. Tactics Ogre - I don't think one needs to expand on this.
2. Wild Arms XF - Don't be fooled, this is a cock hard SRPG that requires real strategy and skill.
3. Lumines - One of the best puzzlers of all time. Yes, visuals and audio do matter - and this merging with puzzler made it a zen-like experience where getting in the vibe meant literally getting in the vibe.
4. Ridge Racers 1/2 - Interchangeable, but settle for 2 if you get it. This is the last real perfect Ridge game. Ridge Racer 6/7 were good but in my opinion just not as focused as these titles. Also, the framerate isn't 30fps trash.
5. Patapon - I don't know why. On the surface, this is really a rather shallow experience. In action, it's a zone out, chanting opus, where it becomes virtually impossible after a time to not find yourself repeating the short little simon says rhythm spells.
6. Megaman Powered Up - Level designing was hellishly addicting. They really need a proper console level Megaman focused around building levels. It's so amazing.
7. N+ - On PSP it's totally amazing hardcore platforming with sweet level creation aspects. Was on 360 too, but I actually preferred playing it here. For no logical reason.
8. GTA: VCS/LCS - God playing this for the first time on the go was revelatory - this was the real PS2 deal. Unfortunately it also meant the same bad framerate, but it was a compelling little slice of GTA heaven. Fuck the touch screen gimmickry Chinatown Warz crap.
9. Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lion - Yes, it had some slow down problems, but the translation revitalized the atrocious original script, the additions were nice little chunks of gameplay and the Yoshida cutscenes were splendid.
10. Killzone Liberation - As far as I'm concerned, the best Killzone game right here. Sweet gunplay and a short but memorable campaign with perfect-for-PSP controls. loved it.
11. God of War Chains/Spart - This is the peak of PSP visual prowess married to the same shallow-yet-tight combat system and absolutely ridiculously epic moments. Too short for their own good, it was nonetheless a worthy package when put together.
12. Daxter - This is a damn shame it was overlooked, 'cause it's actually phenomenal as a platformer. Better than Jak 2 and 3 imo.

EDIT: DJ Portable Max - Shit I forgot about this, it'd definitely be in my top 5. But I'm too lazy to re-order the list so yeah! Persona 2 will definitely crack the list. I want to add Valkyrie Chronicles II, but I'm still too disappointed they made a PSP game instead of what would have been a clearly superior PS3 version.

my history with the psp: got it early, & have used it more than any other console since getting it...

metal gear ac!d 1&2, gurumin, brave story, & the beautiful port of yggdra union are my favorite sleepers. afa the other stuff, too much to mention: mgs:po & mgs:pw, all 3 personas, both disgaeas, fft & ogre tactics, kh:bbs, crisis core... &, of course, all 3 flavors of monster hunter :) . awesome little machine...

To follow up the GBA with the DS and PSP...man, this decade is probably the best we'll ever have where portable videogaming is concerned, honestly. It's DLC and microtransactions and casual social moneygrabs from here on out, IMHO :(

I got my PSP about a month or so after launch in 2005. I got the Value Pack, along with a copy of Wipeout Pure and Ridge Racer. I probably played Ridge Racer until the UMD melted; the idea of a racer that looked and played so good on a handheld was insane to me. Over the years, I got many more games - Ultimate Ghosts N Goblins, Mega Man Powered Up, Maverick Hunter X, Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles, Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max, Lumines, the two GTA games, Guilty Gear, FF: Crisis Core, FF Dissidia, KH Birth By Sleep, MGS Portable Ops and Peace Walker...so many great PSP games.

I was really into the hardware scene for PSP too - I still rock my OG piano black 1000 unit, after opening it up and:

- replacing the screen
- modding the D-pad and face buttons with pieces of NES slipcovers so they hit better

I've got my PSP with me right now, 8GB MS Pro Duo in tow. An awesome counterpart to the DS - I salute you, PSP.

Bought one at launch, two PSP-2000s and a 3000.

Two words: MONSTER HUNTER

we8NT.jpg

Clocked hundreds and hundreds of hours combined on these games. ADHOC play gave me lots of memorable stuff with this series and met a lot of people.

Cannot imagine I played thru P3rd in JP - with a reference on-hand while hunting/farming for stuff. I ain't holding my breath with a localization for this game.

I have played mine tons. I even broke my analog stick from too much Monster Hunter.

Other than that, I had a great time with:

Patapon series
Metal gear Solid: Peace Walker
PSN downloads (MGS, Blood Omen, BOF, Xenogears, VagrantStory, etc...)
Tactics Ogre
Gladiator Begins (my personal most underrated PSP game)

You actually reminded me of something I wanted to ask in this thread--I'm having tons of fun with Ridge Racer 3D on my 3DS. Any cool PSP racing games I should check out? I know there's like a half-dozen Need for Speed titles available.

Crisis Core and Dissidia:FF are also really excellent games from SE, PSP has been blessed with strong SE offerings where they've pretty much failed to deliver on other platforms

And I disagree with the above about PSP/DS generation being the strongest, I really think Vita and 3DS will step it up to a whole new level, maybe with just a few more ports than we're accustomed to ;p

I have such a huge backlog and future-backlog (up-log? Games that aren't yet released, but that I won't be able to play until long after that future release date comes) for the PSP.

Valkyria Chronicles 3 - 95% of the way through; I love it, but it's taking forever

Final Fantasy IV - made some progress and want to play through the main game before looking at the After Years

Tactics Ogre - have barely touched it

3rd Birthday - ditto

Star Ocean Second Evolution - bought three years ago and have barely started

Final Fantasy Type 0 - pre-ordered but no idea when I'll actually play it: the big gorilla in my "up-log"

Ever 17 - Obscure Japanese text adventure that I might well never get to

And then there are all the great games that, if you don't have a PSP, you should consider buying one just to play: Wipeout, Wipeout Pulse, War of the Lions, Valkyria Chronicles 2, Crisis Core.

I also quite enjoyed Castlevania, Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines, Tales of Phantasia/Rebirth/Eternia, and Neo Geo Arcade Classics: Baseball Stars 2 and Samurai Shodown.

I enjoyed MGS Peace Walker a lot. otherwise, the PSP library is mostly forgettable.
P'shaw. How can anyone say that?

Tactics Ogre
Darius Burst
Salamander Portable
Gradius Portable
Tenchu 4
Castlevania X Chronicles (for Rondo + SOTN)
Brandish
Metal Gear Acid 2
+ PSN goodies

and a megaton more. It's a fantastic system.

Side note: Tactics Ogre has to be one of the most elegant games ever. I love that you can go back and not only read synopsis of every major event in the game, but replay the cutscenes if you need a refresher. Plus the continuously updated roster of every character in the game to help you keep track of the plot. I said WOW. Makes other games' design look lazy.

So hey, what's your history with the system?

On launch day, way back when, my girlfriend at the time asked me if I was going to get a PSP. I said it looks cool, but I probably wouldn't try to get one since they'd be sold out. She offered to buy me one if I could find it, assuming it would be a nice gesture and there would be no way in hell we'd find one on launch day without a pre-order. Of course, they had plenty on shelves at almost every store and she ended up putting her money where her mouth was and getting me the system.

I was instantly in love with the huge screen and mind-blowing graphics. There was really nothing like it at the time. I picked up Wipeout as my first game that afternoon, then went back later on in the evening and got Lumines. For the next few months, things were great.

Then the DS started getting game after game I was interested in. My girlfriend, the generous soul that she was, got me a DS, too. I played both systems about equally, and she played the PSP enough to the point she often borrowed it. Well, that didn't turn out great and she lost the system eventually. I decided to cut my loses and go all in with the DS Nintendo, selling the games I had that didn't get lost and getting more DS software.

I got my next PSP when the 2000 came out, then upgraded to the 3000 the day that came out. The last PSP I bought was the Go. As a fan of the Gameboy Micro, I always liked smaller systems and the Go really satisfied my needs in that department. I also didn't care for carrying around a bunch of UMDs and had awful luck with them splitting in half when I took them out of the case. If they ever came out with a version with a better battery and bigger hard drive, I'd probably buy two.

What's your favorite game(s) for the PSP?

Lumines is probably my favorite game on the system, but I really liked P3P, Killzone, Blazblue, God of War, and Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX too. I also liked the fact it plays Playstation games and sunk a number of hours into Xenogears, FFVII, and SotN.

Favorite games on the system

DJ Max portable series
Lumines 1 & 2
Tactics ogre : let us cling together
Metal gear solid : peace walker
Riveria : the promised land
Megaman powered up

That said, i still have a shit load to play on the PSP at this point - KH BBS, Dissidia 2, All the ys games, Legend of heroes TITs, The Third birthday and so on. My backlog on the PSP alone could last me years, add in all my unplayed ps1 j-rpgs and it's seriously overwhelming.

Z-H-P-Unlosing-Ranger-Vs-Darkdeath-Evilman-PSP-Abenteuerspiel.jpg

I always wanted to get into Rouge-likes and the genre finally clicked with me playing this gem. Nice characters, good battle System and tons of content. Let's hope N1 continues their efforts on Vita with both sequels and new IP.

Gladiator Begins is only $10 on PSN I believe...buy it!!!!

Favorite Games:

All Monster Hunter games
N+
Hot Shots Tennis: Get A Grip
Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee 2
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
Both Wipeout games
Ys: The Oath in Felghana (absolutely couldn't get into 7)
DJ Portable Max
Killzone: Liberation
Lumines
Z.H.P.

I love the PSP system and have been an advocate for the system since day 1. There are so many great games on the system that deserved better sales than they got.

It's also awesome to see people producing entirely different lists of favorite games; it really shows the versatility of the PSP game library.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
trailInTheSky.jpg

Such an amazing game.

I purchased my first PSP at launch with (Twisted Metal: Head On, Lumines and Wipeout Pure). I suffered through the so-so years. The long droughts etc.. But I always had at least a handful of decent games to play. I've owned two of the revisions. The PSP 2000, which was great. I then purchased the PSPGO. Which I don't regret at all, other than missing a few games (thanks to the Vita there should be some major re-releases. Come on Birth By Sleep!). It's been a good run, and the PSP certainley went out with a bang. The last two years have been RPG heaven.

My top 5 PSP games of all-time.

What is the deal with this Legend of Heroes business?

I always thought that series was a generic RPG series, so I never played any of them on PSP. This latest one, Trails in the Sky, is apparently a big deal around here. Why is it so especially good?

My favorite PSP game is really a toss up between:

Kingdom_Hearts_Birth_by_Sleep_Boxart.jpg

And:

6wtgb.jpg

Lumines I've put far more time into, I still play it a lot, and still love it. It's not the best puzzle game ever, or the best music game ever, but it's the best music puzzle game, and it's deeply addictive.

BbS is incredible. It is a 3D action game that is consistently fun, responsive, and feels wonderful despite being both without a second stick and using that horrible nub for player movement. It did weightlessness very well too, which for whatever reason I find very charming. I like KH1/2, but BbS was a significant leap, despite being on a significantly worse system.

Not about emulation, but I wouldn't mind knowing which games benefit from using a faster clock speed on CFW. Some games have dramatic improvements at 333 vs 222. If we want to keep it all official, that's fine too. Outrun 2, posted above, is an example of a game that benefits from the increase. I appreciated how some games used 333, or in the case of Kingdom Hearts, had the option to use it at the expense of battery life.

And the OP covers two of my big games. Gitaroo Man is my favorite music game. Probably the only case where I thought the PSP slider was beneficial to the experience, as I own and played the game on both the PS2 and PSP. Gurumin is just a very fun, childish action rpg / dungeon crawler.

Are imports acceptable? because the Gundam vs Gundam games are excellent.

*Everything* benefits from the CFW speed increase and ability to run from MS, as far as I understand. Maybe only the games that recently came out with an install function don't really benefit from that.

FGmAP.jpg

Loco Roco was and still is one of my favorite games on the system, mostly because of its pick up and play nature, the fun, infectious soundtrack and the pure charm of the environment and its characters. I felt fully transported to the experience, the idea of bending the relative gravity of a world only possible because I hold it between my hands.
