Edit: Can we keep Custom Firmware talk out of this thread please? I want to hear about your experience with genuine PSP software, not about all the consoles you can emulate.
There's a separate thread for that. Discuss it there. Not here.
So, we're roughly two days away from the 6 and a half year anniversary of the launch of the PSP in the US, so I thought now's an appropriate time to have a little retrospective thread.
So hey, what's your history with the system?
I initially had plans this generation of sticking with just portable game systems. Between the DS' unique titles due to its hardware, Nintendo's first party lineup and the PSP's more console-esque titles I figured I'd be able to last the generation satisfied. And looking back on it, I more than easily could have been; there was easily enough software between the two products for an entire generation of great gaming.
Unfortunately I decided to get a CompUSA credit card and bought a TV and a Wii with the leftover credit, and then later bought a 20GB 360 on sale at CompUSA's closure, so that plan went out the window faster than I had hoped.
I bought a PSP-1000 in late August 2006 at Circuit City, primarily due to this particular deal here. $159.99 for the hardware was too good of a deal to pass up, and on top of that, Circuit City was offering a free game out of a small selection. I picked up Wipeout and I was good to go.
At the time I was working at CompUSA, and I actually applied their in-store product protection plan on the PSP I bought at Circuit City. Thankfully I did, because I started having issues with the face buttons a little over a year later in late 2007, which allowed me to upgrade to the PSP-2000, as the 1000 had since been retired.
The PSP-3000 I purchased in early February of 2010, as Gamestop was running a trade-in deal, and I really wanted the White PSP that was released with the Assassin's Creed bundle the holiday season prior. Considering how difficult that particular bundle became to find locally not long after purchase, I'm glad I did when I did.
I bought a PSP Go later that year in July when Amazon put 'em on sale and I had a bunch of credit through them to blow. Great system, easily my favorite of the bunch due to its smaller size and increased portability.
What's your favorite game(s) for the PSP?
Easily my favorite of the system's library, Gitaroo Man Lives scratched my itch for an excellent rhythm/music game like it hadn't been scratched since 2002's Space Channel 5 Part 2. I've never owned a PS2 so I never experienced this gem before, and it became the perfect portable analog to the DS' Ouendan and Elite Beat Agent titles.
As noted in the above, I've never owned a PS2, but I've played the Katamari series on friends and families consoles. In fact I was instrumental on introducing my then girlfriend to the series, as I bought her both the original game and its sequel at their release, considering their budget price at released. I loved the game, so Me & My Katamari was my first purchase when I bought my PSP, as I was excited to finally be able to play it on my own time. The game didn't disappoint. Even considering the lack of a second analog stick, I found that the PSP D-Pad and face buttons did an adequate job of controller my Katamari and everything that stuck to it.
As mentioned prior, Space Channel 5 Part 2 is one of my favorite games and after playing Rez, I was super-excited at anything Q Entertainment would possibly put out in the future. Considering Lumines release, at the time I was assuming that the PSP would be the best bet for a Rez sequel or side story. Well, that didn't happen, but we did get Every Extend Extra. What a fun little puzzle/shooter game. Great music, great visuals, great gameplay, all around great game. I didn't dig the later XBLA release for some reason, but I still come back to Every Extend Extra every now and again.
Other favorite titles include Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure, a cutesy Zelda-esque adventure game, Megaman: Powered Up and Megaman X: Maverick Hunter, fantastic remakes of the original Megaman and Megaman X titles, Lumines, possibly the best puzzle game since Panel de Pon, Patapon, a great little rhythm game from Sony, and Loco Roco, possibly the weirdest game ever made.
I own more, but that's my favorites. I've recently been playing my PSP after it's collected dust for about nine months, and I want to round out my library a bit while there's still a little bit of a selection left at retail stores, so I'd love to hear some recommendations of what's the must-have of the system library.
So that's about it. What's your story?
