Proudly debt free. If you need a couple bucks, just ask.
Looking for something to watch on forever alone friday. Minor fantasy / supernatural stuff is fine too.

Some good ones I've seen:

Grave of the Fireflies

Protip: don't watch this unless you want to cry.

Whisper of The Heart:

Very uplifting

Only Yesterday

SPECTACULAR movie. Never came out in America, but the subbed version is still great.

Any suggestions gaf?

Kimagure Orange Road: I Want To Return To That Day.

It has supernatural elements, but it's for the most part a very down to earth(heart wrenching) romance.

5 Centimeters per Second and The Wings of Honneamise are my recommendations. Also seconding Millennium Actress.

edit: Honneamise is a bit sci-fi I suppose

Tokyo Godfathers

Gauche the Cellist (i'm not sure if this is fantasy or not so ehhh, but it's pretty spectacular. Directed by the director of Only Yesterday and Grave of the Fireflies if that helps you any)

Sword of the Stranger

Yeah light supernatural elements are fine ... I just watched Paprika and didn't really like it ... way too over the top.

Porco Rosso (only a very minor fantastic element)

I wouldn't recommend watching it without having seen at least some of the TV series so you have the proper emotional attachment to the characters.

I watched it after only having seen the OAVs, and it hit me hard enough.

Only Yesterday is the best Ghibli movie.

Whisper Of The Heart is the second best Ghibli movie.

mad respect to you for choosing them.

For my part, I really recommend Perfect Blue. Incredible psychological thriller-horror.

I love 5cm/s but Millennium Actress is without a doubt the superior emotional experience.

If you don't count people battling using avatars over the Internet or renegade AI scripts as fantasy then this definitely qualifies (and comes highly recommended)...

Depending on your definition of minor, Colorful and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time might qualify. They both have supernatural and/or sci-fi elements, but the primary setting of each is contemporary and the focus of both is on human relationships and not fantasy jargon and abstract ideas.

Perfect Blue. Best anime film i've had the pleasure of watching.

Tokyo Godfathers by Satoshi Kon is also a great flick. That man was amazing.

Awesome recs so far. I've narrowed it down between

Tokyo Godfathers
Sword of the Stranger or
Girl Who Lept Through Time

pick for me gaf

If you're watching alone, Tokyo Godfathers is the best movie.

Girl Who Lept Through Time

All day.

Sword of the Stranger is solid, but the visuals are what make it IMO. TGWLTT is just a beautiful movie entirely.

Tokyo Godfathers.

Girl Who Leapt Through Time is overrated garbarge.

Tokyo Godfathers is the most uplifting and well directed movie out of the three. Sword of the Stranger is the most exciting and traditional one in terms of being a great period action movie. Time Jump Girl is probably the most atmospheric movie in that group, and it leaves you something to think about, but it might leave you feeling a bit empty.

This movie was better when it had Digimon.

Nope. Hosoda is a great talent and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is a masterpiece. It's definitely a film that should be watched.

Well this word has suddenly lost merit. You can't just go throwing that word around for every hollow and derivative film that comes around.

Not movies, but are great non sci-fi and fantasy:

Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad
GTO
Gokusen

As far as movies... errrr, the good ones have been chosen.

Yeah we really need to have that talk soon. Lol. This unfounded hatred for Hosoda needs to be corrected!

We're not talking about Avatar bro.

For Hosoda? No. For that particular film. Absolutely. Not hate, either. The film is just mediocre. It warrants no hate. I just find the film to be extremely shallow and lacking creativity when it comes to capitalizing on its premise.

I can see what it was trying to do, a mellow time-travel story that is more character than plot-centric. It just did it so lazily that I can't help but question the film every time somebody praises it.

TGWLTT is hollow and derivative now?

I think cajunator has just been outdone.

I don't even understand what I'm reading now. It's like, the words are in English but the way they are being used has no connection with any part of reality.
