Impulse client to be rebranded as GameStop PC App

Dear Impulse Subscriber,

It′s been an amazing five months since Impulse joined the GameStop digital family. When we first started talking about combining forces, we were thinking of all the great ways we could work together to bring more power to PC gamers throughout the world.

In this short period, we were thrilled to bring you in-store download purchases and then add online payment options including GameStop gift cards and trade-in credits. That′s right, you can now turn that old console game that′s been collecting dust into fresh, downloadable PC games by trading it in at your local GameStop and using the trade credit online.

The team has also added more than 200 downloadable titles to the catalog with more coming every week. We′ll still be carrying your favorite indie titles, as well as hot new releases from major developers and publishers. Being GameStop also means many of these titles will come with awesome pre-purchase exclusives and bonus offers! For the 13 million GameStop® + PowerUp Rewards™ members out there, we also recently announced double points for every PC Download purchase online or in stores until the end of the year!

The Impulse client has a new look and a new name as the GameStop PC App. Starting tomorrow, you′ll see these changes start to take effect in the application itself. This update is only the beginning of more upgrades we are working on. We are really looking forward to sharing information on the next application update which will be the first major upgrade from the newly expanded and renovated digital workshop.

Many, many thanks for your past and future support from both Impulse and GameStop.

Now let′s play!

I understand why they're doing it since the GameStop brand carries more weight. Nevertheless the name couldn't be more generic.

They could have thrown an 'i' in there.

Yeah I got the email too, deleted it right away.

Love that Gamestop is calling it a PC App. New name, same service I'll still be ignoring.

As if you could kill off Stardock or Impulse any faster, Gamestop...

And I'm not one of those DURR HURR STEAM people

Looks like Ill be uninstalling impulse soon...I dont really mind too much that it's owned by gamestop, but I dont think I could stand seeing thier name or logo on my computer.

Why does every program has to be called "app" now?
I cringed every time they've used the word in Microsoft's Windows 8 presentation :/

"App" has been used prior to the app store. "Killer App", "Web App", for example. Plus all Mac applications have had the .app filetype for some time as well.

i didnt have many Impulse games in the first place, but the ones i have and like
i have repurchased on Steam over the past few months during sales.

now all i use Impulse for are Stardock games. GalCiv, Sins, Demigod, Elemental.
they really should think about releasing their games across all digital platforms.
they would make a lot more money.

damn Gamestop. acting like you care about pc gaming. still worried one day you
will just pull the plug forever.

They've been called apps since forever. Where have you been?

Yeah, no thanks. I prefer to keep Gamestop as far away from my PC as possible. Impulse/Gamestop is the one major DD retailer that I haven't used.

Has Stardock said if they are still going to just sell their games in Impulse/Gamestop PC App or is it possible we'll start seeing some of their games come to Steam?

Sad.. I always thought Impulse was a good name for a service like this.

Would you suggest that a move to rename the store is a bit... impulsive?

There is apparently talk of them, and I shit you not, starting another service to distribute their games.

Why not? Gamestop would buy that one too! Twain was right; history does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme.

Speaking of gift cards, why the fuck hasn't Steam started offering pre-paid cards to use for their service yet? That would actually get customers who don't care to have their credit card tied to a service.

Let's take the wayback machine to say 2000, PC gaming was still healthy, you can walk into your local EB/Gamestop and find a nice sizable selection of all the latest games. Then they decide to start pushing their used games market, something that the PC doesn't support. The shelf space dedicated to PC games all but vanishes, they stop advertising PC games, and their magazine (Game Informer, arguable the biggest gaming pub out there) goes out of it's way to avoid PC gaming cause it doesn't help their profit margins. PC gaming declines, many declare it dead.

2011, digital downloads have brought the PC gaming market back to life in a big way, Gamestop seeing a profit to be made is now jumping into the pond. Any single one of you who gives these dirtbags a single god damned cent is a scumbag. A scumbag who is supporting scumbags who nearly killed our hobby. I don't care what kind of bargains they have, I don't care what kind of exclusives they manage to bag. Do. Not. Support. These. FUCKS.

Pretty much. If Gamestop wins, we lose.

I think I bought one game from imuplse. Really had some potential but really was never taken anywhere. The only thing I use it for now is Sins. Would rather not have a terrible GS logo on my desktop though.

I'd be down for this.

Glad Supcom + Forged Alliance aren't Impulse DD-exclusive anymore.
think they were always available on gamersgate as well. at the very least since more than two years ago.

btw. supcom is really cheap on steam now!

They've outright said they're going to:

The reason Stardock sold Impulse was because Impulse’s success was starting to come at the expense of the other two parts of Stardock - the software and games groups which had seen resources being taken from them to put onto Impulse to handle its amazing growth. If Stardock's goal was to become predominantly a digital retailer, that would have been fine, but it wasn't. Stardock's primary objective is to make cool stuff, not sell other people's cool stuff.

In the near-term, our software and games will continue to be purchased, downloaded and updated exclusively through Impulse. But we expect to have a new, albeit much simpler, digital distribution system for Stardock's own software and games up and running before the end of the year that you'll be able to start purchasing, downloading, and updating through. We must warn you, however. It won’t be anywhere near as expansive as Impulse or even Stardock Central. It'll just be there for making it quick to download and update your stuff. Very un-intrusive.

I think there is some truth to that, but at the same time, PC gaming hurt itself by a not so smooth switch over to 3D graphics., which probably didn't really stabilize until 2004 or so.

Purchased a Steamworks game on sale awhile back, only way to get the Steam key was to install the impulse client. First and last time I ever use Gamestop digital download services.

That'd be true if the decline occurred everywhere, but it was mainly North America that saw PC gaming take a dive.
