Samsung and Microsoft Announce Revolutionary HDTV Alliance on Next-Generation Xbox

Thursday April 28, 9:00 am ET
- Video Game Console and Digital Television Manufacturers Team Up to Usher in New Era for High-Definition Gaming

NEW YORK, April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Samsung Electronics, a global HDTV leader, and Microsoft Corp., a leading force in the software and video game industries, today announced an alliance to elevate gaming to the next level through high-definition technology. Microsoft has chosen Samsung as the exclusive HDTV worldwide marketing partner for the next-generation Xbox® high-definition (HD) gaming platform. The announcement was made today during the Home Entertainment Expo at the New York Hilton.

The next-generation Xbox/Samsung HDTV combination is designed to deliver the most advanced and realistic high-definition experience to gamers worldwide. To promote the HD Era, the companies plan to place over 25,000 Samsung high-definition televisions in Microsoft® Xbox retail kiosk locations across the globe.

"Gaming has become a primary force for innovation in the entertainment and technology industries. Samsung has selected Microsoft Xbox as the best next-generation game console and a key driver in the global HDTV revolution," said Peter Weedfald, Senior Vice President Consumer Electronics & North America Corporate Marketing, Samsung Electronics America, Inc. "Samsung is proud to expand the Microsoft relationship and stand with them at the forefront of the HD gaming century."

"Samsung is a natural partner to showcase the richness of the next-generation Xbox," said Peter Moore, Corporate Vice President of Worldwide Marketing and Publishing for Xbox at Microsoft. "Samsung HDTVs will provide Xbox enthusiasts with the truest high-definition gaming experience available."

The alliance is the culmination of a global process begun by Microsoft in October 2004 to find the most advanced and formidable visual display company to join with the new-generation Xbox video game console. A wide variety of visual display screen sizes and technology platforms from Samsung Electronics (LCD, Plasma, Micro Display - DLP and Slim Fit HDTV CRT's) combined with the incredible new Xbox console will give gamers unprecedented realism and intensity in their gameplay. The new 23" Samsung LCD TV (LNR238W) to be paired at retail with the new Xbox console offers a super-fast 12 millisecond pixel switching speed, which will enable intense action while overcoming any motion artifacts. In addition, the Fixed Pixel Device eliminates scan lines, further ensuring gameplay is smooth and flicker-free. Picture quality combines with advanced audio technology to create an incredible gaming experience. Samsung's HDTV built-in speakers emulate the most realistic surround sound using SRS Tru-surround XT so the action feels even closer. Game enthusiasts will no doubt appreciate the sharper details, deeper contrast and rich sound that are standard on a Samsung HDTV.

The global marketing and promotional alliance between Microsoft and Samsung Electronics will drive the HDTV gaming platform as the greatest emotional experience available for gamers around the world. The alliance will include cinema, POS, television, print, on-line and various other media efforts.

Samsung Electronics and Microsoft enjoy a long-standing relationship as strategic and tactical business partners. Microsoft Xbox currently incorporates Samsung technology, and Samsung will continue to be a tech driver for the next-generation Xbox video game console. Microsoft's first high-definition game will incorporate Samsung-branded products as well as instances of Samsung's logo as part of the overall HD gaming experience. This will mark the first time Microsoft incorporates a consumer electronics technology partner with the Xbox console and games.

The companies are involved in other collaborative technology efforts as well. Samsung Smartphones incorporate the Windows Mobile(TM) platform; Windows Media® Audio and Windows Media Digital Rights Management 10 (Windows Media DRM 10) are integrated with Samsung digital audio players; Samsung's new Portable Media Centers feature Windows Media Audio and Video and DRM 10; and the Microsoft Windows® platform is used across Samsung's global family of notebooks and personal computers.

As a part of their continued relationship, Microsoft and Samsung Electronics are uniting in a nationwide (USA) cause-marketing program entitled "Samsung's Hope For Education." Now in its second year, the program will deliver more than $2 million in much needed technology and software products, including Encarta® Reference Library 2005, to elementary, middle and high schools across America through an on-line essay contest. So..... what does this mean? Requirement for any Xbox kiosks to use Samsung TVs? Or what? Benefit to me as a consumer?

Not directed at you SonyCowboy - you're just the messenger.

Yeah, official displays will be Sammy displays. And the benefit to the potential consumer is that you get a clearer idea of what X360 is all about, visually.

Wow, that was earth shattering.
Almost as much as you downplaying this news :lol

But yes, you got the point. It is more a PR/face value movement than a real benefit for the consumer. I want to see it though.

Well it will certainly make a big difference in consumer perception of xbox 360 vs. ps2.
It's a win-win situation for both samsung and microsoft. Quite smart move, I would say.

and keeping one of the biggest consumer electronics companies (if not the biggest, in terms of profit) on your side is never a bad thing.

Stringer (calling Ken Kutaragi)

Sony is really doom3d!!!!Microsoft hasn't chosen their TVs to showcase their next Xbox in the kiosks!!It's the end.
Revoutionary HDTV alliance :D

Awesome.

I hope this forces the other two to upgrade their kiosks. I won't be satisfied until I see SamsungHD/Xbox 360, Panasonic/Revolution, SonyWEGA/PS3 test drive arcades.

Wake up, Sony. Microsoft ain't Nintendo.

Wow. Some Xbox fans can make a mountain out of a molehill, which is what I was describing regarding the MTV/XBox teaser. MTV teaser and now SAMSUNG Kiosks!!!!!!! I agree their nice things, but if Xbox fans actually believe they are knockout blows, that's just crazy.

If you guys get this worked up over this, you're going to die of a massive coronary when the actual MTV informercial airs and if you somehow manage to live through that, you're head is going to explode when the Microsoft E3 Conference hits.

Wow, so when I go into Best Buy the dipshit employees are "supposed" to demo the XBOX360 with a Samsung shit tv. Big fucking deal. Right now they are showin XBOX's Burnout 3 on a 60" Sony LCD. Samsung tv's will not enhance the XBOX360 experience, they just got some product tie-in.

Great move for the Xbox.

I wonder if there'll be any Xbox branded Samsung TVs? Like the RCA TVs that came out with a few years ago with the proprietary VPORT jack that hooked it up directly to the Xbox. Too bad those weren't HDTV, though.

Atari with the E.T. debacle

Nintendo with the cartridge debacle

Sony with the kiosk debacle.

Oh well, Sony. It was a good run while it lasted.

Well, when I go into a Game Crazy, EB, or Gamestop, where they use the official XBOX displays in their kiosks, I'm going to see the games on a good display for once. The current ones suck mucho asso.

I hope Samsung don't mind being associated with a device that only has standard definition movie playback, rather than one that showcases the benefits of a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray high definition image. :D

The PS3 kiosk will be able to serve 2 purposes not just demonstrating the more powerfull hardware of the PS3, but also the benefits of HD-DVD/Blu-Ray content :lol

+1 Sony

Well, I have to admit it.

MS seems to be pulling out all the stops.

Sony may have to take notes this time around.

Got one of these just ready for the 360:

What if the nextgen format is finalized after the PS3 is out?

What's interesting is that that TV doesn't support 1080p. Of course, that might merely be a budgetary reason. I'd hope the PS3 kiosks to support that.

Unless, of course, our esteemed panel here thinks that the differences between 720p and 1080p are imperceptible to the human eye.

But it's revolutionary. What's Sony gonna do about that? PR from Sony won't have the revolutionary synergy of Samsung and Microsoft, man. It'll just be, 'hey, we're putting official Sony HD-TV displays in our official Sony PS3 displays.' :lol

Nah Sony will use 1080p 25" displays, one-upping MS, and thus ensuring market dominance.

WAL-MART shopper: Hey Bo, c'mon lookit dem new XBox on de H DEE TEE VEE!

So what 3% of the X360 userbase use a HDTV? Excellent move if so :lol

Personally, I do not see much of a point in getting a 360 if you do not have a HDTV.

You won't see the true greatness of the system (PS3 also) without one.

Not only that Nick, they can use their own HD TV displays, thus allowing the TV division to charge the PS divisions a shit load for them. This will get the TV division out of the shit and Sony will be making huge profits again.
