Nintendo sees skyward sales on Black Friday

Super Mario 3D Land and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword helped Nintendo to a successful kickoff of the holiday sales season.

The new Nintendo 3DS game, Super Mario 3D Land, which landed in stores Nov. 11, has become the fastest selling portable Mario game in company history, selling more than 500,000 units since launch, says Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime.

Meanwhile, the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, released for the Nintendo Wii on Sunday, Nov. 20, has sold 535,000 copies since its U.S. launch, making it hte fastest-selling Zelda game ever, he says.

These strong new releases also drove sales of Nintendo 3DS and Wii systems, Fils-Aime says. Last week's 3DS sales tripled (by 325%) compared to sales the week of Nov. 6, the week before Super Mario 3D Land debuted; the week of its debut, sales rose 49% over the previous week.

The Nintendo Wii had its biggest Black Friday ever more with than 500,000 units sold just during Black Friday and the pre-Black openings at some stores, he says.

lock if old.

Last year, though the hardware seems to be for the full week instead of the day like some of the figures above: http://kotaku.com/5701259/black-friday-week-was-very-good-to-nintendo

Kotaku said:
Fueled by new hardware colors and special holiday bundles, Nintendo had a very happy Black Friday week indeed, with 1.5 million video game systems finding their way into the hands of gaming-hungry shoppers. What systems sold the most?

Nintendo's handheld gaming systems won the week of Black Friday, according to the company's own internal sales estimates, with 900,000 Nintendo DS, DSi, and DSi XL systems purchased during the period between Sunday, November 21 and Saturday, November 27. The Wii didn't fare quite as well but still managed to hit the 600,000 mark, bringing the grand total to 1.5 million.

Not bad for a dead console(half a million in one day, thats crazy).

I like that Nintendo fans have to immediately resort to bizarre straw men to preemptively diffuse any sales debate.

ha, I couldn't give two shits to be honest, I just felt like saying it. Infact I actually think they're pretty shit figure compared to COD etc.

I knew the Wii kicked ass, wasn't available anywhere online. It would be so cool if Nintendo dominated the charts for november and december.

I came in here expecting discounted prices on Wiiware and/or VC games.

I'm an idiot.

I was wondering about that for a moment and then was like "I guess the other way would make more sense."

These are solid sales though.

Are there any 3DS hardware numbers, or is it only the percentage so far?

Just from casual observation while running around on Friday, the 3DS was a hot item. Also, I knew several people picking up their 2nd Wii console to put in another room for Netflix or for younger kids in the family.

Last year it was 600k Wii and 900k DS.

Wii was flat but 3DS didn't come close to DS.

Edit: These numbers are for the full week though.

I can't wait until they describe Fortune Street as "the fastest selling Monopoly-style party game where you play against the Slime from Dragon Quest available on Wii."

I kind of wish Zelda sales were even higher! So many people owning Wiis and it *only* did half a million? This is Zelda, in a perfect world it should be doing a million in a week, but I guess Zelda never really had that power. I guess that's good news if it is indeed the fastest selling Zelda game.

Conflicting Wii reports huh? I felt like I was reading a lot of people saying Wiis were sitting around on Black Friday. November NPD numbers should be fun!

it's pretty telling that they didnt release the 3DS numbers, but did for the Wii.

yeah I was thinking that. Expecting 3DS to do about 700-800k down from the million + I was expecting for november. I would love to be wrong though =D

edit/ and if I'm reading that correctly, they say 3ds got a 49% sales increase after mario released and then compare this weeks sales to the week before mario's release. Guess they're trying to make the percentages more impressive than they are

WHO ARE BUYING WIIS? WHO DOESN'T OWN ONE?

I guess Wii Sports Resort and stuff like that is gonna move big numbers (that's if it's not bundled).

Pfft Zelda only sold because it's shiny

It's really late in the life-cycle and I'm jealous of people who got the Black Wii, NSMB Wii + SMG Soundtrack bundle. It's so awesome.

Hey Chris, why is the press release saying it was the biggest black friday for the console if last years they sold 600k?

I know its a press release but i don't think they are allowed to be factually incorrect.

Exactly what I did, but this has got to be the first time in 10 years I've worked retail on Black Friday that we have not completely sold out of a DS system, in this case, we didn;t sell that many 3DS's at all.

It makes you think how much better Mario could have sold on iOS.

No it doesn't.

And I'd NEVER want to play a Mario game without the precision control of a stick or a d-pad. Anybody who would rather see Mario on iOS is probably pretty stupid.

Mario 3D Land was going for $60 on Amazon, it looks like it will sell gangbusters over the holiday.

Pretty sure it was a troll post.

Anyways, Wonder if 3DS + DS > DS from last year.

I bought one. My girlfriend bought one as well for her kids. $99 a piece with NSMB was just too inexpensive to pass up.

Quick question. How do DS games look on the 3ds? I pulled up a youtube video that claimed that ds games were alot blurrier and was not a big fan.

Thinking about possibly buying the black dsi bundle on sale today if it cheap enough or just biting the bullet and buying a 3ds.....

How? How is it doing this?

$99 + new zelda.

Why? Nintendo needs to learn to stop putting out shovelware

Skyward Sword is shovelware now?

If they wanted to lose tons of money in the long term, sure! Are people who suggest this trying to make Nintendo lose millions?

"Quick question. How do DS games look on the 3ds? I pulled up a youtube video that claimed that ds games were alot blurrier and was not a big fan. "

I'd get the 3DS. The games look a bit blurry, but I'd rather have a 3DS and the ability to play newer games than having older DS games look a bit better.

I wonder about 3Ds sales too, the lack of numbers is troubling.

I want the 3DS to light the charts on fire so we can get even more awesome games on the platform.
