Let's talk about weird controllers/perephials of the PS1/PS2 era

I can't imagine that thing being comfortable for playing DDR at all.

Or this:

The ASCII Grip, made for playing RPGs
and Dead or Alive *wink wink*
. Also, I can see it being really useful for disabled/handicapped people.

Also this:

The Namco NegCon, made for Ridge Racer. I don't know much about this one, save for that I've seen a few people on GAF swear it's the best racing controller ever made. I'd like to try it for myself someday.

Anyone have any experiences with any of these controllers or ones like them?

Dragon Quest VIII PS2 Slime Controller.

Extremely ergonomically unfriendly, but I still played through my entire 120 hour DQVIII play through with it. :D

Not so much a weird controller, but it had a very narrow release period for the PS1. It was released in 97 and was replaced by the Dual Shock a few months later. Sony pulled it from the market in 98.

It did however, offer some benefits over the Dual Shock. First, the handles are longer, second is the concave analog sticks. Another feature is that you can press the analog button and it will turn green, this allowed the controller to emulate Sony's Playstation Analog Joystick.

man, i always wanted to try a negcon but i live in bfe and that was before my internet shopping days. i was still on dial up at the time and amazon was an online bookstore i heard about on the radio. damn that feels like forever ago.

NeGcon and Dual Analog Pads. Such a great time to be a gamer, back then. I have both.

Edit: I always liked how the G in NeGcon looked like a circular arrow path.

Never forget stuff made (seemingly) just because of PSO Ep.I & II!

I always wanted one of these but never got it. Instead I learned how to type quickly using the on-screen keyboard! Kinda wondering if you had to use it as a controller or if you could plug it into a different port other than the first and use it for typing alongside a regular controller.

Modem & Broadband adapters. Sold seperately instead of a nice all-in-one option -_-!

Ohhh, the NegCon.... A friend of mine used to have one - he thought it would make racing games more enjoyable... how wrong he was.

I don't know about others, but I also tried it and I didn't get along with it at all.

!
It has two joined cables that come out from the controller and two separate plugs (one for the keyboard and one for the controller), so you could only plug the keyboard side in if you wished and use a normal controller. There was a cheaper ascii alternative that was just a regular ass keyboard with a GCN plug on it IIRC.

I had one. You could plug it into controller slot two and use it as just a keyboard (on your lap) while controlling your character with a regular controller.

That racing controller always really interests me and there's very little information about it online? How does it even work? And why do people consider it the best racing controller?

A few years ago, I saw something odd... it was a folding, pocket-sized controller for either the PS2 or the original Playstation. It had a vaguely keychain design, and unfolded to reveal the control pad and buttons.

I can't remember if it had any sort of analog stick option, nor when this was (exactly). I do believe it was during the vague 2003-2008 stretch.

Edit: Hey, look -- DealExtreme has it in stock!
