More Desperate HL3 News: Voice Acting Done/In-Progress

Adding further credence to the recent run of Half-Life 3 news stories, OXM has been told by a US-based voice actor that they have recently recorded lines for "Half Life Episode 3".

The structure of the title could be a slip of the tongue rather than outright confirmation of the "episode" tag, which Valve has previously stated it's moving away from. We've requested further clarification from our source.

The company has been determinedly quiet on the subject of the next Half-Life release since the last game arrived in the Orange Box bundle back in 2007. Some time in 2012 would be logical if the company wants to publish on Xbox 360 - given competitor pressure, the next generation Xbox console is unlikely to launch later than 2013. Although let's be honest, PC is Valve's first love, and it can release the next Half-Life without even bothering to talk to retailers thanks to its Steam digital delivery system.

That audio is being recorded might indicate the game is close to completion, as audio roles are generally recorded later in development, after levels, scripts and characters have been thrashed out. Valve's never been one to follow the herd, though. It spent nine years redeveloping Team Fortress 2 before release.

Writer Chet Falisek told reporters he "wasn't prepared to talk" about Episode 3 in February.

The game recently became a subject of conversation after showing up on a random game developer T-shirt last week. Somehow, we can't quite take that particular rumour seriously. Can you?

Maybe it'll be one of the reveals at the Spike VGAs this weekend. We'll see. We've asked Valve for comment, too.

I want to believe. :(

What games are Valve confirmed to be working on at the moment? I know one of them is Dota 2, and presumably that new Counter Strike that was mentioned, and the constant never ending updates to TF2, anything else?

DOTA 2, Global Offensive, TF2 updates and probably maybe L4D and Portal 2 DLC.

All three of their current releases (L4D2, Portal 2 and TF2) have content confirmed to be in development (L4D2 DLC has been in beta for a long time now, Gabe's mentioned more Portal 2 DLC multiple times, and they're always working on TF2), as well as the two you mentioned, Dota2 and Counterstrike: Go. CS:Go is a joint development with another studio, though.

I don't understand why people care if it's called Ep 3 or HL3.

It will be the exact same game.

EP3 implies a 4-6 hour episodic game.

HL3 means it will be a sequel and therefore be way longer.

For the time we have been waiting, Valve better be releasing an actual sequel. :-/

GAF will break apart from the sheer concussive megatonnage if HL3 or EP3 shows up in any form at the VGAs. Now THAT would be a fucking surprise reveal.

In your head, maybe.

An "episode" can be as long and as much of a proper sequel as Valve want it to be, especially after 4/5 years of dev time.

It's such a silly thing to get hung up on.

What the fuck? I'll only get Episode 3 if it comes out on Wonderswan.

As much as I hate saying this, I've lost a lot of "Half-Life-heat" the past year. When Episode 2 ended, I wanted the sequel immediately. Now I don't even give a shit. When it's released, I'll buy and play it - but I won't hype it.

You lie. They'll release one image, you'll remember how Ep 2 ended and the wait will kill you on the inside all over again. ;)

Yeah, right

when HL3 trailer comes out and its looks fucking amazing, you'll be right there be excited like everybody else

If you're going to blame anyone, blame Valve for the laughable idea of Episodes for this game in the first place.

Also to me it makes a big difference. Not being a fan of HL2, I have zero interest in an episode which will surely be more of the same whereas a proper full blown sequel will hopefully take place in a different time period with different enemies. Hopefully.

Just watched the ending on Youtube...

God, I need this game. Like, right now.

edit:

There we go :/...

What?

They can't do that. Eli dead, Alyx and Gordon going after the Borealis. Dude, I want to see that damn ship!

Uh... if you think the next Half-Life game, whether it's called Half-Life 3, Half-Life 2: Episode 3 or Half-Life: THE FINAL CHAPTER, isn't going to be about Gordon and continue exactly where Ep 2 left off then you're in for a shock my friend.

Ep 2 was drastically different from HL2, by the way. I see Ep 2 as a "full sequel" as much as I do 2 from the first game. Ep 1 admittedly was not.

There we go :/...
Told you!

Are we really sure that we can spoil the ending of Episode 2 in this thread?

Told you!
I just don't understand how Valve can do this to me... they leave me with no Half-Life for years, yet when I just go back and watch a bit of Epi 2, it's as if the game was released just yesterday. Any other developer would be dead by now... but not Valve.

Obviously it would be a continuation of the story, but for HL3 I expect to see something really different like the shift from HL1 to HL2. I haven't played E2 but was it that big a shift? Like radically different time period and setting and characters (other than Gordon)? If so I apologize for my ignorance.

I guess what I'm saying is, I want an HL game that in no way resembles HL2 and I think I have a better chance of getting what I want with a proper sequel rather than an episode.

Yeah see I don't care about any of that stuff which is why I'm going to wait for HL3, which should be coming out sometime by 2025 hopefully.

Because one will be 3 hours long, and one will be 10 hours long.

*bangs head on desk*

The name doesn't mean anything when it comes to length. It's some stupid psychological thing people have.

When Valve ditched the episodic model it was clear they were making a big game. In all likelihood it will be called HL3, but if it is called Ep 3 it doesn't matter - the end result will be completely the same.

Ep 2 ended on a point where they're going to a brand new location. Other than that, it shared a lot in common with HL2 in terms of characters, enemies, etc.

I guess this thread just shows why companies put so much in to branding/marketing. People read way too much into things like titles.

Because one will be 3 hours long, and one will be 10 hours long.

EP2 was already 6-7 hours long, and EP3 was confirmed to be "bigger" in 2008.

Shack: Is the long development period a result of all the projects in development at Valve right now, or the scale of Episode Three?

Doug Lombardi: Both. Both really. I mean we want the next installment of Half-Life 2 to be really big.

So I mean, we're taking more time because it's a more ambitious project.

There's no reason why it can't be 10 hours long and still be called an episode.

I've been waiting for the next Half-Life game for over four years now. FOUR YEARS!

So excited for this game. More excited than I have been for any other game ever.
