Erm, no? The worldwide housing boom of the previous decade for one was on a much grander scale. I'm not even sure what you mean.
I don't like this comparison because Microsoft make an established computer operating system and iPhones are phones. Both cater to totally different markets (one market is booming and the other is relatively stagnant) and both are in different growth stages. Not to mention that the Xbox has been basically unchanged for almost 7 years now, so it's not exactly a hot selling item.
Microsoft has sold a phone OS for years. They assumed they would rule phones just like they ruled the desktop.

If Apple didn't have this success we would still possibly have Vista and Windows Mobile. Windows 8 today would be still on a road map 3+ years down the line and Windows Phone wouldn't exist.

Apple came in at a completely different level than all the other phone developers. To me, Microsoft trying to break into the phone OS market is like Apple trying to break into the console gaming market. (and I don't mean iPad & iPhone as a gaming system, I mean like a dedicated system like xbox or playstation)

My t-mobile MDA had that OS. it was fucking terrible.
I had to reconfigure the touch screen daily because it would lose track of where my stylus presses were ocurring. battery life was horrid. startup time was horrid. browser was horrid. call stability was questionable.
Why did I buy that phone? Ugh. Fortunately, my next phone was the iPhone 2G.

Oh, right, I thought it was funny that on Christmas weekend, a combined 6.4 million iOS + Android devices were activated. Microsoft sold a total of 6.8 million Windows Phone 7 devices in all of 2011. It took iOS + Android 2-3 days to almost match the total sales of WP7 in all of 2011.

Edit - Unless you meant that they could respec the ipad and iphone. Your post didn't make that part clear. If they could just release new ipads and iphones every year then, yes, they will still be around 10 years from now.
Bill Gates was pretty good... but he had plenty of his own management flaws. I mean the guy stayed on as Chairman and still worked at Microsoft up until something like 2006. So of 6 out of 12 years of decline, he still had significant power to change things as he saw fit.
His biggest failing was keeping Ballmer on - that guy... on one hand, I imagine he's kinda like the embodiment of MS culture. OTOH, MS culture is so irrelevant nowadays, and he's kinda the reason for it.

All they have to do is upgrade those products. Look at how much the iPod still makes them and look at how long it has been out on the market. Their laptop industry also makes them a good amount of money. Apple's business model is to come out with a product, charge a premium, and then slowly drop the price as they upgrade the device. It has worked wonders.

Microsoft has always been a terrible company, right from the start.

Also remember the Apple Newton, the PDA they release way back when? That didn't do so well and if you judged Apple's ability to release a PDA type product on the success of the Newton then the iPhone should have failed. Microsoft never seem to get things right the first few times, just look at their OSes. It used to be that you would wait for the first service pack before you upgraded to a new version of Windows.
