Notch splits profit with employees

Best dev in the industry right now.

I bough Minecraft not knowing truly what it was, simply based off GAF opinion, and how awesome Notch is.

Almost the best purchase I've made this gen. Minecraft is the most addicting thing I've put my hands on.

That's nice of him and all, but it'd probably be smarter to invest that money back into the company.

Sweden is a pretty socialist and loving country so I can understand why.
Kudos to him :D

We have a system (CRM) developer here in Sweden (Hudiksvall) who donates the winnings of the company to the employees.

They are 20-30 ish and the winnings was 1.5 million euro... alot of cash.

Oh, they do this every year.

You could say that is an investment in his employees. Happy employees = productive/creative employees.

Fair point. But the money could also have been used to hire new employees and grow the company. I just hope Notch makes the right business decisions, because it'd be nice to have another big game studio in the making. Between this and the Psychonauts 2 thing I get the impression that Notch likes to throw money around, but I hope I'm wrong.

I'm sure it's a bad translation. It's got to be a portion of the profits or profits during a certain amount of time. Didn't you learn anything from Game Dev Story?
Make games by hitting keyboards and caffeinating employees.

Why does /v/ hate Notch that much?

I wouldn't take them too seriously. It all comes down to "years ago when I paid $10 for this game, Notch said he was going to add ____ and then that never happened so I'm pissed that I've played a $10 game for years that's only gotten better and better. Notch is fat and steals money."

4chan is the butthole of the internet but I still like it.

He tweatee about it. No mistranslaton.

It'S nothing unusual for firms that care for their employers.

Porshe recently gave 7000 euro bonus to every man from dishwasher to heads under their wing. And they do that everyyear.

That's how you make yourworkers loyal to you.

Don't most countries allow for employee profit sharing schemes?

That seemed like pretty standard fare to me, particularly with huge corporations.

I guess they're all swimming in money.

Yeah, it goes like this, basically.

what the fuck.. what a fucking commie. so disgusting. he didnt have to do that, so WHY? pointless.

oh, Sweden, haha, Europe. figures.

seriously though, awesome guy.

Because /v/ is a part of 4chan and 4chan hates everything.

I post my stuff on there and they're very nice to me. Though someone said something about Notch getting help from /v/ to make Minecraft but then leaving for Reddit, and that's why they're pissed.

There was the incident with Notch talking back to some guys that do youtube stuff/podcasts on minecraft and all the stuff that goes with it. There was bickering about who helped make minecraft so big through word of mouth. Then the minecon event which was really weird.

So that was the reason? I thought it was just internet drama from all the other little things.

I think it should be about 1/3 or so, of a regular yearly salary for most of the swedes.
So it's a pretty great bonus, for your boss to deliver to you.
If I worked there, I would feel really really bad, if I couldn't work extra if I were asked after receiving such a bonus, luckily with my current bosses that problem will probably never arise. :p

The translation is fine for the most part, but note that this is just the divedend he got personally from his shares in Mojang, in which he is only part owner. It doesn't say what percentage of the profits the company payed out to it's shareholders to begin with. And if I remember correctly from some interview I read a while ago, Minecraft is owned by his personal company, to which Mojang pays royalties; and that's where his massive personal fortune is building up.

i like how notch does whatever he can to stay relevant

except working on minecraft
He left Minecraft. That's why they're actually implementing useful things now and not stealing mods.

How is it stealing if someone changes something about the game you created, and you add that feature to the game for free?

Or do you just mean that by adding improvements that fan made to the main game, that's not very creative? o_O

Because they get no credit for their work.
It would be nice if they had mentioned it on Twitter or something, sure. *shrug* He still seems like a decent guy to me, and if they have never mentioned any mod creators on twitter/the blog that is too bad. (I am being serious, not sarcastic/condescending)

So refreshing to read a story like this in an age where we are bombarded with stories of corporate greed. I wasn't interested in Minecraft before this, but now that I know, I'm buying a copy on PC and another one on XBL when it hits. I support people who do awesome stuff like this.

so he didn't split profits of minecraft, but his share of the dividends?

i don't really see what the big deal is, this would be like a bonus? it's not even that much money

I like how he said how he was giving $3 million before taxes to his employess. So my first though was thats about what, 1m after taxes? Maybe less in Sweden.

From what I remember game developers often get around $10K in bonuses after a major release, but $30K is way above average. It's more than half the average annual wage of a typical indie developer.

Exactly what I was thinking. I was under the impression he was some kind of prodigal one-man show. Clearly I was way off base.

He was the only employee for the first year and a half after the alpha went public. Since then he's gradually hired more people.

That's a pretty amazing thing to do. Notch is good people.

This seems way above "standard" to me. We have profit sharing where I work and our company posted a 2011 profit of 2.3+ billion last year. I got about $2500. I'm sure the number of employees plays a factor though.

Yeah, YMMV obviously, I was just pointing out the principle itself is nothing new.
I agree it's a nice sum though and it's nice that he does it. Here, there's a number of fiscal incentives for companies to do that.

The number of employees is a factor and in my case salary is too. My company is in the same ballpark as yours profit wise but we're relatively small and we got bigger sums than this. Being in Europe might help though.
