Not market share, active usage. Different stats, unfortunately.

Just after Microsoft’s post about the inaccurate market share reports from StatCounter, the company behind one of the most popular monitoring sites has published a report of their own.

However, it has nothing to do with the HitsLink vs. StatCounter, in fact what they did is revealed that Microsoft’s Internet Explorer has been overtaken by Google Chrome for the first time in history on Sunday 18 March.

While IE remains the number one web browser as of today, Aodhan Cullen, CEO of web Statcounter said that Google Chrome usage peaks over the weekends when people don’t work and can freely choose what web browser to use.

With the upcoming release of Windows 8, Windows Phone 8 and Xbox Next, which might have IE pre-installed, it will be interesting to see how IE’s market share changes over the course of next year.

The beginning of the end?

The first thing I do when I am on a PC without Chrome at work... is install Chrome.

Hate IE.

Good man.

With Chrome for Android eventually replacing the stock browser on Google-blessed Android phones and tablets, I foresee that Chrome's growth is going to surge in the coming months and years even if it's been slowing down a bit lately.

I use IE at work for literally one thing: ensuring that coded websites render properly in IE (when I've already seen how they look in Chrome and Firefox).

I hate it.

edit: By the way, 1 out of ever 4 or 5 times, some element does require a code tweak just to look the same way in IE :P

I'm a huge fan of IE 9. IE 8 sucks so I'll use Chrome if the work computer I'm on doesn't have Windows 7. Otherwise, back to IE 9. Not even sure what all the hate is about with IE since 9 is out. A lot of people using the word 'hate'. Prefering one over the other is fine, but hate?

I wish there was some info. on IE usage based on age demographics. I find it prety crazy that so many people still use it.

Don't go into the other bar Opera, please.

Opera's fine, they're over double all "other" browsers put together. What should be worrying is Safari, which I believe has stalled growth despite the sudden increase in Apple hardware sales of all kinds.

Does anyone else ever become worried about how much Google has infiltrated our internet lives? From a search engine to an email service to a web browser...

I've had to use Internet Explorer lately and it's actually pretty serviceable, and this is coming from a Chrome veteran.

And a bit off topic:

For some reason, with my latest reinstallation of Windows 7, Chrome has worked like absolute shit for me. It takes days until I can actually navigate a site after loading, the browser hangs/freezes for days, I get plugin errors up the ass, etc. I tried reinstalling but no bueno... Any ideas on what I could do to fix it?

Safari still accounts for the overwhelming amount of mobile browser usage; I doubt Chrome for Android will be changing that anytime in the near future.

All the hate IE gets.

You all used it back in the day, admit it.

Netscape → Opera here. I fully admit that IE 4 or thereabouts was far superior in rendering capability to Netscape, but I found Opera and its seemingly unique at the time "have multiple pages belong to the same window" feature absolutely magically delicious, and it came to my notice just around the time I would have abandoned Netscape.

IE9 is probably fine, but all those shitty previous versions pushed people to other browsers. Until IE is so drastically superior to the alternatives, it's not going to be gaining back any of that marketshare.

I wish Chrome didn't run like garbage for me on Mac OS. I have no idea why, but like the last six months or so it's just gotten terrible. I use to like it, but now I'm forced to run Safari (which, really, isn't at all bad).

As a hobbyist web developer I would say I hate Internet Explorer. Older versions of IE are notoriously bad for not supporting great features that would make web development much easier. IE9 is a step in the right direction, but not enough people are using it right now for that to really make a difference.

I'm still mainly a Firefox user but Chrome is fine too, I enjoyed the time I spent with it last year.

I predict the tides will start seriously turning early next year. 4.0 and 5.0 should at least have a 1/3 of the market by then, and Chrome should come out of beta and be pre-installed on Google-certified devices by that point too.

So Chrome is better than Firefox?

It has been for quite a while, I'd say since at least early 2010. Definitely since September 2010 and Chrome 6.

MS isn't doing itself any favors by pushing bing so prominently in its IE9 ads. Instantly turns me off. I've been a firefox user for a long time, will take a lot to make me switch.

Safari is terrible. First thing I do on any Mac I get is install Chrome and Firefox and drag Safari off the taskbar.

Man, too many haters in this thread. I use firefox, ie, and chrome all the time. I'm a 3 browser man. I get the best of all worlds.

I can't believe Internet Explorer is still such a piece of shit. Microsoft knows how to write software. Why can't they make a good browser?

IE9 ain't bad, and IE10 in the W8 preview is great.

I don't really understand the direction they're taking, though. Plugins/extensions in Chrome are great--don't know why they aren't going that route with IE.

Oh most definitely. I went from IE to Netscape, until Netscape had a major version come out that was piss ugly to look at. I cant remember which version it was, but it was extremely different looking. I ran from Netscape to IE and never looked back. Then I found FF.

I have chrome installed on my PC but I still dont use it as my daily. More than happy with Firefox, amazing what they have done with Chrome though. Getting that sort of browser usage share is not easy.

They did. IE9 & 10 are good browsers. Not Chrome or Firefox good (aside from basic browsing which is comparable in speed and efficiency for me), but solid nevertheless.

Poor Opera. Quietly sitting around being the most beastingest browser available, without getting the attention it deserves. Even from nerds.

Apparently because they'd rather have Google track all their shit, or have access to shitty plugins.

Am I butthurt?

You're goddamn right I'm butthurt.

I use IE, Chrome, Firefox, and Opera for different situations.

Chrome is shit with Gametrailers. It's bad with saving cache versions of videos. So use Opera for that.

When I just need some page fast, Chrome.

I'm willing to give all browsers a chance. If IE 9 really is better now, I'll download it right now.

I use Chrome, Firefox and Safari on my computer at home. Overall I find that Chrome works the best, and I probably use it most often. But I'm actually surprised that I find myself enjoying safari more than Firefox. Firefox used to be my #1, but it seems to have gotten worse over the last few years.

I have not used IE much at all since about 2005ish.

I actually think Safari has the nicest look to it.

I think Safari is by far the ugliest. Toolbar, title bar, upside-down tabs *on the bottom.* Eugh. Horrible.

I didn't even know it passed Firefox.

I'll be willing to bet that large chunk of that IE market share comes from the military.

For some odd reason DOD still just won't give that shit up.
