Story:

“The older brother should always be ahead of the younger one...”

When they were little, two brothers, Mutta and Hibito, made a promise to each other as they looked up into the night sky. In the year 2025, Hibito has kept his promise and become an astronaut, part of the first wave of people to live for an extended period of time on the moon. Meanwhile, his older brother Mutta has been fired from his job at a car company after an altercation with his boss. But one message from his brother makes him decide to start being an astronaut again. To follow Hibito to the moon, Mutta will attempt to take the astronaut candidate exams at the age of 32. Unaware of his own talent, elder brother Mutta chases his dreams to get back in front of his younger brother.

So what is this?

An anime adaptation of Chuuya Koyama's manga Uchuu Kyoudai (Space Brothers), serialized in the seinen magazine Weekly Morning (which has housed manga such as Planetes). It airs Sundays at 7 AM in Japan, and will run for a year. The manga was nominated for the Manga Taisho award in 2009 and 2010, and was awarded best general manga in the 2010 Shogakukan Manga Awards and Kodansha Manga Awards. A live-action film will be released in May.

Why should I watch it?

Did you have a childhood dream that you abandoned as you became an adult? Do you ever look back and wonder what your life would have been like had you reached for that dream, that dream which now seems impossible? Then there's a good chance this story will resonate with you. With a widely acclaimed manga, a skilled director in Ayumu Watanabe, who breathed new life into the long-running Doraemon franchise and has a careful eye for the subtleties of human interaction, a solid studio in A-1 Pictures, and a run length which will allow justice to be done to the source material, this should be a strong show.

Really, it's got bros! And a pug! In SPACE! What more could you want?

Where can I watch it?

It's streaming on Crunchyroll every Saturday at 8 PM PDT, starting today, March 31.
 
As I said in the other thread (or was it IRC?) I thought one of the key concepts of the show sounded hokey and stupid but the first episode left clues as to why its plausible and made total sense to me so I'm now fully on board. This will be great.
 
Really excellent first episode. The direction was strong, with lots of clever scene transitions. I really liked how the shooting stars led seamlessly into the quirky and energetic OP. Mutta is an enjoyable and sympathetic character, and I look forward to seeing what happens to him.

Bros and Bro-ing it up don't really remind me of Planetes but I might be thinking more about the second half of the series. I guess the first half was pretty bro-ey.

Well, its a character drama set to the backdrop of space. So in that regard they share some similarities.
 
First episode has me so hyped. The pacing was perfect and the mood was lighthearted despite some of Mutta's regrets. Comedy was never stale or unwelcome either; hopefully it'll stay that way throughout the show.
 
That was pretty good. Nice humor. Hope they can keep up the quality for 40+ episodes they're supposedly running.
 
First episode was pretty good. Kind of reminds me of a adachi manga but set in space. Hope there's a love triangle in there somewhere.
 
It's been a while (years) since i've watched an anime (that wasn't a film, like Akira or the like).
The synopsis sounds very interesting though, i might give it a shot.

That would be fun. I don't want both of the brothers in a love triangle, though.

Actually, scratch that. It'll probably screw with the purpose of the show.
 
There's lots (and lots) of places where this could go wrong and become a horribly clichéd mess, but I enjoyed the first episode. Here's hoping the rest of the show will be as enjoyable.
 
Does anyone know if there will be a love interest thrown in at some point? For some reason, I can see that being a terrible idea.

There's a
female astronaut that should show up in the next one or two episodes.
Don't remember if that goes anywhere, though, at least in the chapters that have been translated.
 
First episode was definitely very good. The story is being told in a pretty interesting way, and the monologues from Muta were used to great effect. I'm looking forward to seeing where this show goes.
 
Yeah the first episode was great

It feels like an anime that everyone could appreciate, even people that don't care for anime at all (perhaps in a way that Ghibli movies are)

I love how pretty much all non-action space stuff in fiction is always about dreams. Not that I'm complaining. It always has that "epic" music and generally good atmosphere, and this continues that trend.

Mutta seems like a relatable everyman with big dreams, but a slightly cynical viewpoint to hold him back from accomplishing that (for now). In other words, the perfect protagonist for a series like this. Very interested in how he grows.

This also makes me want a ST&Rs anime.
 
Enjoyed the first episode, and looked great in HD. The music reminded me of Last Starfighter. Also hit me a bit on a personal level.

I will be watching this weekly.
 
Do we know how long/how many episodes this show is supposed to run? I'm enjoying it so far, but if it's going to be a long show, I might worry about the pacing.
 
This is not Homeboys in Outer Space.

I remember reading from some blog that 50ish+ might be planned, take it with a grain of salt.

Information that briefly appeared on YTV's English site indicates that it'll be 48+ episodes. I'm sure the station will be observing its ratings and continued reception before deciding exactly how many episodes it'll run. The manga has 16 volumes out and is still ongoing, so they're not going to run out of material.
