Welcome to the official neogaf tsuritama thread! tsuritama is the latest directorial effort from the seminal Kenji Nakamura. It's his fourth successive anime to be aired on Fuji TV's prestigious noitaminA block, famed for such shows as Fractale and Guilty Crown.

What's it about?

In Enoshima, Yuki is a high school student who's never been good at making real friends thanks to his abnormally poor communication skills. Haru is the self-styled alien who decides to teach Yuki to fish. Natsuki is an irritable born-and-raised local. Akira is the mysterious Indian who watches them all from a distance. These four meet, fish, and find big adventures on their little island. via ANN

You might've noticed by now that I failed to mention [C], Nakamura's latest effort. That was intentional. I'll leave you with this screencap from Trapeze:

Show is great. A great comeback for Nakamura after the wholly unfortunate [C].

This show does everything right -- it's beautiful, the characters are interesting, the music and music placement is amazing, the use of color is fantastic, the animation is great, just.. amazing. If it keeps up for the rest of the series it could be Nakamura's best series -- and that's saying something. Mononoke was the best anime of '07 and Trapeze was the best anime of '09. If I had to use one word to describe the first episode, it would be "joyous."

Did I mention how beautiful this show is?

Tsuritama 1

So this is how Dr. Seuss sees the world when he's on acid and hanging out with Keita Takahashi. Them visuals.

Yuki is an interesting character. The dude very clearly has an extreme case of social anxiety and it's displayed in a pretty unique way. Love his facial expressions. Haru is cool too.

First episode was good. Kind of wanted it to be wackier, but oh well. Everything from the atmosphere to the art is top-notch. I wish this was a game so I could explore the world. Very pretty and vibrant. Also glad it's about more than just fishing. Hope they don't beat around the bush for too long and make the plot clear soon.

I enjoyed it thoroughly. So as usual I will leave this as a single post and never visit this thread again... until the finale perhaps.
 
I didn't know he did anything beyond Medicine Peddler and Trapeze.
I guess that's a good thing?

This has been alright though.
I love the music.
 
The smile that captivates everyone! Haru's bustling happiness sure is contagious for the spectator, along with that music that goes so well with his apparent personality. In normal conditions, fishing would be recommended to alleviate the anxiety problems of Yuki, but with that companion I expect everything now!

Amazing how the director links scenes at a startling pace; with the beginning, its cool transitions and that insert song being a great example, creating a nice mood. The same goes for the absurdity of Akira and his cohort, and even the drowning parts and the reactions of the people to Yuki's funny face make his problems seem more inoffensive, don't ruin this said mood (as bright as the colors used on this).

Very promising and relaxing first episode, it leaves you in high spirits!
 
Didn't like it. Just didn't seem as interesting as his other shows from a story perspective or style perspective. Didn't even realize it was Nakamura when I watched it because it felt like every anime on the planet. The colors were nice but the art was really lacking in detail most of the time.

In a season with so many good ep1s already it seemed pretty average.

Need more crazy trapeze, less this. The opening part in the aquarium was nice however.
 
Really enjoyed this. People have been comparing this to Kids on the Slope and saying it's like some poor version of that, honestly I think it's way different. Kids on the Slope seems to be a coming of age story while this just looks like some light entertainment between four friends going doing fun stuff together without an overall "lesson" so to speak. The art is great and so is the music, I'll definitely keep watching this.

EDIT: Stylish Grandma moe is all the rage this season.
 
Episode 1

Very interesting show. It's wacky, dynamic, and pretty slapstick, but it moves at a breakneck speed, and coupled with the extremely colorful visuals and excellent music accompaniment, the show basically had me grinning for the entire episode. It's very upbeat, carefree, and hits the mood tones just right.

There's some pretty interesting animation moments, but in general it's pretty noticeable as a "normal" anime after watching Kids on the Slope and Eureka Seven AO on the same day. But I like how the show plays to its strengths instead, and lets the art direction and music carry the entire show even without amazing production values. That's a sign of a good director making do with what he has in an effective way.

Goddamn, this is such a happy show, it feels like sugar rush without the moe.
 
The designs and animation were top notch.

Not only were the water effects, "camera work," and scenery beautiful, but it was also well presented.

This has to be the best anime of the current anime season (which is shaping up to be awesome.)


The only problem I have, really, is the slides before and after the commercial break. The sounds they use in them are like some lucky star type shit.

Goddamn I love this art style so much. Absolutely gorgeous. The variety of vibrant colors, the detailed backgrounds, etc. The character designs themselves aren't as impressive but they fit in really well with the rest of the world, imo. The music was nice too. Got a bit of a Wind Waker vibe from it lol. Definitely my favorite looking show this season aside from Lupin III (and not counting Hyouka yet).

The show itself is pretty decent. The characters aren't bad but also not as interesting as they could be. Then again we haven't seen much from Akira and Usami. Not really sure what to think but i'm interested to see more from these characters. Haru seems like he might become pretty grating over time though, but this show seems really fun and light-hearted so I'm definitely gonna keep up with this.

Also, a duck named Tapioca. That's awesome.
 
Tsuritama 1 - That was really good, it's so unlike anything Nakamura has done before, yet it's very Nakamura in how atmosphere-driven it is, the aim of the episode really felt like it was aiming to portray a certain mood and it pulled it off perfectly due to how well-done the art direction and direction was, not to mention the music.. wow. I'm kind of interested in what the "plot" of the series is going be, because it's overall tone feels very much like a slice-of-life series more than anything else, looking forward to seeing how weird and crazy it gets as the series progresses. But at this point it's easily my second favorite show of this season (right behind koikelupin) with how packed this season is, that's pretty high praise!

That was pretty good. The art direction is mostly spectacular, although I'm not a fan of how the sky looks. And that was certainly a novel(and visually interesting) way of depicting extreme social anxiety. This holds far more promise than [C] ever did.
 
Darn wish there were more posts, this anime is really lovely and amazing to me. Yuki is hilarious and Haru too, well and Natsuki, actually may everyone is, even Tapioca.

The va's make me even unable to shake off the feelings of Kimi to Boku, which is probably good since I love that anime too.

11 episodes is so short but I think each one will be just as enjoyable and visually pleasing.

Surely I'm not the only one that finds those water guns to be really creepy and unnerving?

I'm finding myself rather fond of the laid back atmosphere of this show so hopefully they'll stick with it. It looks like they'll start to explain just what the hell's going on outside of
fishing something to save the world
in the next episode.

The OP is really cool and all the colors and just all the characters moving together and what not. I enjoyed it. Character interactions was fun as well as the underlying friendship thing. Progress being made on Natsuki's development, Yuki too was great. Really more interested to see them overcome differences and actually become friends.

Closing moments of the episode and the overall goal is compelling, curious how they can accomplish the goal in the remaining episodes (if it is 11 episodes).
 
Episode 2

Hmmm... not sure how I feel about this show exactly, but it's interesting. I found the majority of the episode pretty boring since I don't care for fishing or any of the specifics regarding it. The music was really good though. There were interesting developments towards the end of the episode. I like the themes of friendship and so on, and the imoutos introduced this week were pretty cute. I hope the story develops to be more about friendship than fishing, because I don't really care for fishing. I'm okay if it's used as a metaphor for life though.

The OP is kinda... odd. I don't really care for how it makes all the characters seem mentally challenged. The dance is really dumb imo.

It sure is a weird stealth fishing show. Well, not really a stealth fishing show, because there is nonstock talk/images of fish, fishing rods and so forth but because it has this weird alien/drug water gun/bizarre layer on top of the fishing.

The show continues to get better and better with each episode. It's nice to see them continue to gradually reveal what's going on.
Keito better not die. :(

Episode 3 was pretty amazing on all fronts. The fishing was rather detailed and surprisingly managed to keep my attention even though I dont know the source. It was a great way to reveal a bit more on Natsuki, as well as ensure some laughs from just Yuki, nervous to speak aloud, as well as Haru.
This time not even under the influence of the water

Akira Agarkar and Tapioca time for development was interesting and fun. Not my favorite of the four, probably down with Haru.
But the ulterior motive aspect and the Duck Curry corp? seemed to imply that the plot is really taking off soon. I guess they will actually have to do something to save the world, though the question is if Akira will stay with the group or defect to the other three.

Keito's health part was emotional as well as Yuki's reaction, which I thought was nice to see Natsuki and Haru actually try to cheer him up and get him back to what he needed to do. Guess they are his friends afterall and I guess he feels the same even though hes not good with spoken words, via the blushing at the end of the epic fishing in the bucket scene at the end, and hilarious to see Natsuki laugh
 
Yes, the latest episode was pretty amazing.
I think I might have enjoyed it more than Kids on the Slope's 3rd episode (which I thought was really good as well).
 
Episode 3

Pretty solid. Really creative ways of depicting what is a pretty boring activity (lure casting practice? really? zzzzzzzzz) and I liked how they developed the characters. The plot expansion is pretty.... weird. Everything that's going on seems kinda deliberately retarded, including the designs of the characters and so on. It's going to be interesting how they tie all the themes together later in the series. The writing is pretty good for what they're aiming for though, with really distinctive dialogue from the different characters, reflecting how unique their individual idiosyncrasies are.
 
Why doesn't this thread have more posts? This is easily the best series this season.

Episode 7 was pretty good with the plot finally starting to reveal itself. I always laugh at the mispronounced "Yamaaaada" for some reason. :D

DUCKKU! I cant pick a favorite episode for this anymore. Each are just continually good. Really Yuki has developed well and interacted stunningly with everyone and I feel so happy whenever he accomplishes something. Now Akira needs some development to fit in with them better, though, based on last episode, seems like he never had friends or something.

Also so many emotions with the episode
I thought Akira was gonna attack Haru there and Haru actually seemed to get scared or something, what was up with being unable to squirt the water. Though, I hope he is able to build a friendship with him, seemed at the end he was nervous to approach Akira about it at the cookout :(
 
I'm really surprised that I'm starting to like this show better than Kids on the Slope, although comparing the two shows is like apples to oranges. Regarding the most recent episode, it genuinely shocked me when
Akira pulled a real gun out of his turban instead of a water-pistol. The intrusion of a real, cold-hard, steel killing machine into Tsuritama's candy-colored universe is effectively jarring.
 
Yeah this show is most definitely one of my top favorite shows this seasons. Each episode feels like it's getting better and the latest one was excellent (and a little unsettling considering the ending). The art style is just plain gorgeous at times and the overall mood is really relaxing.

I'm definitely looking forward to see where the story goes next.
 
This thread has been dead for a while now, but it really is a wonderful show and apparently it only gets better from here.

I really love this show. Everything just works.

Animation isn't spectacular or anything, but there are some great moments here and there to liven things up. The art is amazing, though--the colors are vibrant but never garish, and the backgrounds are always gorgeous with subtle changes between different settings. It's nice to note that when things need to look worn, they are indeed worn. Just a lot of good care that went into them, which holds for the show in general. The character designs are all appealing and fluid, and it's a pleasure seeing them in motion.

It's been fun to watch the cast develop, as well. With its languid pace (especially compared to the ride that is Apollon) and the consistency in direction and characterization, it's just been . . . fun. Apparently episode six is MEGA UBER HYPE so I'm looking forward to that one.

Lots of people are watching it. We just can't be bothered to copy and paste posts into this thread. There's no discussion going on in here, and if it's just a dumping ground for impressions which are already in the anime thread there's no point. Most other active OTs for anime shows have ongoing discussion in the thread itself about the show from time to time.

WOW. This was an absolutely incredible episode, a real roller-coaster of emotions.
Straight from the beginning I felt a great sense of relief that the Captain and BOSS were alive. That sense of relief progressively turned into sheer raw joy and excitement up until the very moment where everything goes absolutely wrong. This horrible turn of events was only made even worse when Haru finally said his goodbye's at the very end, leaving us with the "Continued in #12" message.
I honestly cannot wait untill next week for the conclusion of this fantastic series which will hopefully continue to one up itself with each and every single episode and leave us with an absolutely mind blowingly amazing final episode, and when I say amazing I mean the end of episode 3 times a billion kind of amazing!!!!
 
I was very intrigued by the first ep (it looks fucking gorgeous), but the second ep lost me to some extent. Yuki had one too many panic attacks and the alien dude was a little too cutesy.

People in here are saying it's better than Apollon though so I guess I better keep at it.

Definitely keep up with it. They actually tone down those elements of the series past ep3. And it all really pays off in a big way once you get to ep6 and onwards.

Yeah as has been said both of those aspects get toned down quite a bit, though both lend some charm to each of those respective characters. Its worth it for the end result.
 
Hmm a drama anime involving fishing.
Will give it a watch someday (I have lots to watch and play ATM, so this'll be in my backlog *gomen to OP*)
