Nicalis Announces 1001 Spikes (3DS/Wii U Digital Release)

Brazil

Living in the shadow of Amaz
Nicalis’ next Nintendo game is 1001 Spikes. The studio will be releasing it on the 3DS eShop as well as Wii U’s digital store.

1001 Spikes is a remake of the indie title Aban Hawkins & the 1000 Spikes made by 8bits Fanatics. It was released on the Xbox Live Arcade last year.

The 3DS/Wii U edition will feature new art, visuals, music, sound, and a multiplayer mode. Four users will be able to play together locally.

1001 Spikes will be released this year. It’ll be available on the 3DS eShop first and on Wii U sometime after.

There are already 16 Wii U games officially announced. Well, 17 now.

Other than Dragon Quest X (which can be explained by Iwata's presence at the press conference for it last September), not one retail Wii U title has been officially announced since last E3. Even titles that have been announced for the platform (Aliens: CM, Darksiders II, ACIII) don't feature the Wii U logo in promotional materials. On top of that, the last indie dev to confirm a title for the platform by way of a logo (Slightly Mad Studios, Project CARS) saw said logo swiftly taken down from their website. That's what I'm referring to.

Have they spent so long bringing VVVVVV over to Europe that they've decided to give it a title change?
I keed, I keed

Although Cave Story's DSiWare release is no laughing matter. Where the FUCK is it?

Yeah, I've never heard of this game, so I assumed it was an indie game. Is it good?

Yeah, but another super precision-based platformer. Lots of death, as the title(s) imply. I got sick of it after a bit, but liked how it felt to play, in general. Just too much death around all corners for me.

Nicalis, that's great news, but when are we getting La Mulana and Night Sky !?

I also hear Trine 2 could come to Wii U:

"Thanks for the suggestion. We are keeping a close eye on all current and upcoming platforms, and we will bring Trine 2 to more platforms in the future... Wii U would make for a nice platform, that's for sure, the tablet would fit Amadeus perfectly indeed. We can't really disclose any "real" info because that's all covered by legal confidentiality agreements and the like... But let's see how it goes. :)" - Joel from Frostbyte

Surprised that they're allowed to officially announce anything for Wii U. I wonder what Nintendo's actual policy is.
Nicalis was also one of the first small devs to get 3DS kits iirc. Nintendo seems to be showing them preferential treatment for awhile now so I'm not really that surprised.

Also, weren't there rumors about 3rd party Wii U NDAs being lifted recently? I wonder if we'll see more low key announcements leading into E3?

But but but GAF told me every/any WiiU title announcement was under NDA, dat third party support.

It is.
This is probably more because it'll be on the eShop which will be cross platform.
But as of yet, no retail title has been able to be announced (See Project CARS and Skyfall).

It'd be really cool if the game was buyable once and playable across 3DS/WiiU.

Doubt it'd be the case and not gonna condition my purchase to that, but I'd wish we'd knew more about how the WiiU store will work.

Never heard of the original, but the screens have piqued my interest. Will purchase as soon as it's vetted by day-1ers.

I have a strange Rick Dangerous vibe from the screenshots (the first one, not the one with the aliens)

Which brings me to "More Rick Dangerous please"

Coming to Australia and Europe in 2013*

*2013 years after the asteroid wipes us out and we re-evolve from single cell organisms and find a Wii U in a bunker.

Anyone who doesn't want to wait for the port should pick up the excellent Xbox Live Indie Games version this is based on. It's fantastic.

That said, this is awesome news. 8-bit Fanatics is a quality developer and I hope this leads to more work for them in the future.

Checking out some gameplay of the XBLA version. Seems very memorization based, to those who played it on 360, is that the case? or is it conceivable that you cant get through some levels on your first try?

I hate required memorization, so I'm wondering if I should bother.
EDIT: I don't mind difficult. Super Meat Boy, for example, was tough but not because it was full of things surprisingly killing me out of nowhere, just demanding execution.

Do they have a record for doing that?

The only Nicalis game I own is Steam's Cave Story. That game had the classic visuals and soundtrack intact so I can't complain.

-NA WiiWare version of Cave Story missed several announced launch windows, and when it did finally launch it featured numerous bugs, including a sound/music bug that had been pointed out repeatedly during the pre-release period that they claimed was fixed, as well as deviations from the fan translation that annoyed people for whatever reason

-PAL WiiWare version of Cave Story didn't release until ~10 months after the NA version (although they did lower the price and give us the bug-fixed version to compensate)

-PAL DSiWare version of Cave Story is still MIA some ~15 months after it was released in NA (missed at least six launch windows)

--Cave Story 3D is a thing that exists

-NA/PAL version of La-Mulana WiiWare is still MIA some ~9 months after it was released in Japan (missed at least four launch windows)

-NA 3DS eShop port of VVVVVV is missing announced features (like custom stage support via SD card) yet costs more than the PC version, and also included a few bugs that froze the game and prevented you from accessing some of the alternate mode (these have since been patched, IIRC)

Then there's also the cancellation of WiiWare NightSky, and whatever issues the Cave Story Steam/Mac ports have.

I've also heard complaints about Nicalis/Tyrone Rodriguez having Cave Story LPs pulled, trying to have Team Meat pay him for Quote's inclusion in SMB, packaging fan content as paid DLC, etc but I don't follow any of that stuff so it could all be complete bullshit.

There is a TON of tricks and traps to contend with. It's a trial and error style frustration platformer. Expect to die frequently.
