as above, I am doing some production design and I am looking for some ultra violent sci-fi anime for inspiration.
list away amigos!
A more violent version of Policenauts would be ideal :)

I remember there was a great gif floating around of many people being shot and blood and gore blasting everywhere, but I cant remember the movie...

Mad Bull 34 is maybe what you're looking for. Not sure if that was late 80s or early 90s but it was definitely violent and had cops in it. Pretty much so bad it's good.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is pretty good, has a lot of violence and gore if I remember correctly.

Mad bull 34 is AMAZING.

Also, second Gunsmith Cats.
Although GSC isnt so violent. Just a few scenes of carnage. nothing particularly brutal.

It's from 1987, but I can't recommend Wicked City strongly enough. Then, jump ahead to watch Ninja Scroll (1993) from the same director; it's not SF, but if you want violence, there you go. Also in the not-SF-but-awesome category is Riding Bean (1989), which has vehicular mayhem and all hell breaking loose in Chicago. Finally, it's not exactly ultra-violent, but for all sorts of awesome late 80s/early 90s SF anime action, you can't go wrong with the original Bubblegum Crisis OVAs. Oh, and if you aren't watching Akira over and over again, well, you should be.

I just finished exams yesterday and I am in the process of re-watching Dragonball Z (Kai now?) I know it is very commercial, but I have such fond memories of it in my adolescence, and I am told kai cuts out much of the filler. High five!

A lot of the tracks in the OST are blatant plagiarism though, but if that doesnt bother you, go right ahead!

It also stops after Cell dies, so depending on your opinion of the Majin Buu parts, this is either a good thing or a bad thing.

I stopped watching after cell saga, so that is fine. It has just been about 10 years since I watched it, I am due for a refresher.

Holy shit, I completely forgot this existed! :O

The friend who got us into anime had this, but we never got around to watching it. We kept wearing out his Ninja Scroll, VH D, and Akira movies. Plus, the art style and only being 6 episodes kind of turned us off, but this friend really really wanted us to watch it.

"running man"

probably from the late 1980's, but oh well. Also looks terrible on YouTube, good luck finding a disc of it :P

I thought Black Magic M66 was amazing. Kinda low-quality animation, but honestly the only time I've seen Shirow's manga "done properly" as an anime. I know a lot of people would disagree with me.
