Nekro is a light-hearted yet dark themed game about controlling a powerful necromancer. The game's premise was created from a conversation that went something like this: "Wouldn't it be awesome if there was a game where you could just walk into an innocent town, raise a bunch of zombies, skeletons and monsters and watch while they rip the townspeople to shreds?" Then we paused and said, "Well, why isn't there?" What followed was many nights concepting, discussing and creating. "Wouldn't it be cool if the Nekro could craft his own spells, but...collecting reagents in a randomly generated world!" The cumulative result of these discussions is what you see before you.

In Nekro, you are the bad guy; a powerful necromancer able to create unthinkable horrors out of the twisted lifeless corpses of your enemy. Blood is your fuel; razing towns and slaughtering anything that opposes you is your creed. Even though you are evil, the humans of the land are corrupted, and will stop at nothing to wipe you out. You will face many enemies and challenges in the world of Nekro. Here's some of the content rich features you can expect to see in the final product:

This project is too damn interesting to let fail, Kickstarter is exiting for letting the oldschool designers make project in genres they were forced to give up on, but it can have a even greater effect, helping people who haven't got to the level of a Tim Schafer yet.

This is also intersting as a KS project since they are showing a lot of the game.

The art and animation show the personality off well, bloody, puss-filled cuteness.
The same vibe last seen in Overlord.

With only 9 days to go and only 50% funded this is not yet a shoe in, and if it where to show this much promises and then fail... well that just wouldn't be right, now would it.

PS Before the "OMG not Kickstarter agun" crowd show up, please just think of this as the preview thread.

Would pledge, but I already pledged for Shadowrun, WL2, and Banner Saga. Plus, I blew the rest of my budget this month on other non-gaming Kickstarter projects.

From the other replies it seems to be the art style that's putting people off, shame since that one of the pluses for me.

That's the vibe I'm getting too, and like you the art style was one of the things that stood out for me and what caught my eye from the beginning. Hopefully there will at least be more traffic through that Kickstarter page and we can get some on board.

The goggles! They do...

Neat take on the Overlord model, but that art is terrible. I just couldn't imagine looking at that stuff for any extended period of time.

I have no doubt this will get funded, since it is coming out for PC and PC supporters are strong on Kickstarter (as I learned in the Republique thread where it was implied that going PC would mean getting the 500k goal and this is asking only for 100k). But I have no PC so pledge from me.

I hope this gets funded, I still need to contribute, just haven't decided whether to pledge $15 or $25.

I assume we still get one copy of the game at the $25 level? The text is slightly confusing and could imply that it was two copies included, although it's most likely just a mistake

"(All Prior Rewards) + Early access Beta Key + A DRM-Free digital copy of Nekro complete with your name in the credits" - one of the prior rewards at $15 is "A DRM-Free digital copy of Nekro".

When I first saw this kickstarter I thought there was something wrong. I saw a great pitch video, artwork, screenshots, and yet the project had less than $300 pledged. I searched for more information, and I couldn't find a website/facebook/anything on it so I was kind of wary on it. I pledged anyways but for a couple of days it didn't look so good.

But it looks like the people running it have gotten a crash course on advertising. There have been a couple of spikes in donations and for a long time it didn't look like it would make it. The project is still not guaranteed though but they are doing far better than how the project actually started. I don't know what else they could do, since lots of websites have already covered the project.

I said it in the other thread, but I really think their 50-150 tiers need some work. the art book for $125 is too much, but I would have bitten if it was offered at the 60-80 range. There should also be a $100 tier between the 75 and 125 because that's a big difference if you're pledging in those lower tiers.

I thought the same thing. No funding for you, sorry. Unless this gets some huge attention, I don't think it's making it's goal.

The KS page as it is now is one of the best I've seen, a good (if a little limited) video, in game screens and concept art, but when I made this thread it as about 55k it's now 59k.

Maybe showing people what the project actually is can hurt you, if DF said their game was set on Pluto maybe a bunch of people who hate Pluto would pull their pledge.

This is of course just based of this one case but with a massive lead in it will be interesting how the Tex Murphy guys handle the potential issue.

Uh, who exactly are the employees of this "darkForge Games"? They claim to be from some big name companies who have "worked in the industry for over 12 years" but there are no real person names listed and the only site I can find for them is the linked Wordpress blog and a Blogspot page which only contains posts for the Kickstarter.
http://darkforgepress.wordpress.com
http://darkforgegames.blogspot.com/

The Blogspot page lists a "Josh Mugridge" and googling his name only comes up with Youtube and Twitter accounts which have been closed.
http://www.youtube.com/user/darkForgePress
http://twitter.com/darkForgePress
edit: seems their official twitter account is http://twitter.com/#!/darkForge_Games but there's nothing in there except posts about the Kickstarter

It seems like the name "Josh Mugridge" only comes up in relation to this Kickstarter. Here's a Google Plus account with the name but it only contains posts related to this Kickstarter.
https://plus.google.com/117376891957284000419/posts

I'm not going to call it a scam outright, but this seems extremely fishy.

That's most likely why the large majority of people are in the lower two tiers, I would pledge a tier or two higher if the prizes felt a little more worth it and some of the tiers were reworked a bit. As it stands right now, I can't even see a reason someone would go from $15 to $25. Is beta access worth $10?

Nekro getting desperate - they just sent out this update:

This is it! We've come down to the final days of Nekro's Kickstarter Campaign.

We have some big news, and some important information to talk about on this final push to the finish line.

It's come down to this: We're going to keep doing as much as we can to get the word out until the very last hour of the campaign, but for now, with no big leads, we have to assume what we have is what we're going to get. This, however, isn't a bad thing. In fact, it's very good. See, we have over 2,000 backers. If you look on this very site, there are Kickstarters that have half the amount of backers we have and twice the amount of money. How is this possible? Pledge tiers.

We have over half of our backers subscribed to the $15 and $25 dollar tier. If we have even a quarter of those backers up their pledges to 50$ or above, we can make our goal. There's been a bit of confusion on what happens if the kickstarter doesn't succeed, so let me explain where we're at. I'm going to be a bit blunt and completely honest here, as I want all of you to understand exactly what's at stake.

If the kickstarter does not go through Nekro cannot happen. This is the unfortunate reality of the situation. We will not be restarting the kickstarter for a lesser amount and the game will not be coming out 'one way or another' as many seem to think. Let me explain.

The amount we are asking for is the bare minimum we need to make this game. Up to this point, myself, my partner, and the few other people working on the project have been doing so either without pay, or have been using our savings. We have put in countless nights, staying up until the sun rises, neglecting our families, sleep, and our lives. We did this because we wanted to prove to you, our backer, that we aren't just all talk; that we can make this a reality. We didn't feel right asking for money without having proof of our claims. However, the process that lead us to this point is not suited for the development of a full-scale title. If we get the $100,000, this will be used to offset the massive time demands this game is making on us by hiring more people (we will not be taking the money for ourselves at all.) However, we will still be paying for this game for the remainder of its development cycle out of our savings, even with the $100,000. Making a game of this type takes a lot more than the amount we're asking for, so know that the $100,000 is our bare minimum. A lot of people are saying we should restart the Kickstarter and ask for half the amount in the event of it's unsuccessful conclusion. The reality is, this cannot take place for the aforementioned reasons.

That's the gloom and doom part - but here's the good news. There's over 2,000 of us, and we're all passionate about this project! We have seen other Kickstarters do it with less, and we know for a fact it's possible. It comes down to you guys. The cool thing is it won't take a lot. $40,000 may look like a lot of money at a glance, but if everyone slides up their pledge tier we can easily hit the mark.

We know this is for some a difficult thing to do. So we wanted to sweeten the pot a bit and give you guys what we know you've been wanting - a box copy of the game. For the next 6 days we will be offering a special $99 dollar pledge tier just for you. Here's what you'll get for this special tier:

A Collector's Edition Box Copy of the game: We will only be printing this for you guys. This is a one-time offer and will not be offered again at any point. The box will be signed by the entire team and made out to you!

A Behind the Scenes "Making-of" DVD included in the box: Go through all of Nekro's development and see how the game grows from day-one all the way through to launch. We'll show concept art, game builds, and brainstorm sessions that will not be released to the public.
A Nekro iPhone/Android 'Alchemy App': View in-game models in real-time 3D, get all the stats on any unit in the game, try out different brewing combinations, test out unit stats, and read live updates about the game on this awesome portable app.

Get access to our Live Development Stream: We've decided we're going to stream out work on the game. Watch us make artwork, write code, talk about ideas, and even chat with us live on our stream.
Of course, anyone that's pledged higher than $99 will automatically get this new tier included in their list of rewards. Additionally, the new $99 will include all prior rewards: the soundtrack, the t-shirt, a digital download copy of Nekro as well as your name in the credits. This is a ton of content available for this price, and we're really excited to be able to offer it to you guys.

If just a quarter of our backers purchases this exiting new tier, we hit our goal. Plain and simple. We have all the backers we need to make Nekro a reality. We can hit the goal tonight if everyone makes the switch. I have no doubt we can do this and you guys should too.

oh man this game looks pretty cool dropped the $15 duckets

Glad to see people still getting interested in it.

I think I might drop the $100 for that new reward tier. I'm always a sucker for boxed collector's editions.

I will raise from 15 to 50, I prefer digital and would be happy with what I would get from the 15 tier but them being so open with where they are and how close this will be has made me want this to succeed even more.

I think a good number of people are thinking the same way, considering there was ~1,004 people pledging at the $15 level and now there are 989 at the time of this post. I feel more personally invested in this project because of how open they are about things, so I wouldn't mind tossing a few extra bucks their way.

Well it looks like they were listening with the tier update. Upgraded my pledge to a 100.

Same. I like the honesty regarding the situation they are in and the new 99 tier just shows that they really want to reach that goal by doing anything possible, even if it ends up being more work for them.

$98,349
PLEDGED OF $100,000 GOAL

4 Days to go.

From 50% just 5 days ago and looking like it was going to fail, it's now at 98% with 4 days left.

One single last push of interest and we'll have another success.

$100,000!!!! Amazing!! Words can not express out deepest and sincerest gratitude. You guys are absolutely phonomimal!! We're going to do an official "What happens next?" update with information about the next steps but for now I just wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone who made this project a reality!

A very special Thank You to Total Biscuit - you are one of the main reasons Nekro is going to be able to see the light of day. I cannot thank you enough for your continued support throughout our project. We will have a permanent link to your site and shows proudly displayed on our website for all to see! Seriously, thank you.

And a very big thanks to all the wonderful people that supported us and helped us get to where we are today: Steve Kim, Aaron Hecht, Steve Juarez, Josh Mugridge, Kim Kicks, the Yogscast crew, GamingLive, DistractionGaming, Joystiq, all of our Linux supporters, ShiVa 3D and the amazing people at Stonetrip, and of course all of our family and friends whose unwavering support has given us the confidence to keep going!

Again, THANK YOU to everybody!!! Expect another official update soon. :)

It's time for a punge party!!

This is awesome, was the project out of the few I was backing that I was hoping would get funded. Can't wait to see what other kind of updates they give us.

Woo glad it made it. Couple days ago I was worried.

Im guessing Total Biscuit really gave them a push :)

It was adding in the $99 Reward Tier that saw them spike from 50% to over 98% in just a day or two.
Glad to see this one make it through and get funded. One of the three I was really pulling for.

The "one free DLC pack" thing is mostly what kept me from following this one. It's nice that it was funded though.

Thanks for the title change mods.

This is the really interesting thing about KS, I don't even know my own pet hates that would stop me backing a project .
There are small things like the bottom tier not having the thing your funding that annoy me.

It doesn't annoy me, but it's just a little confusing. I saw this one where the lowest tier was a picture of the dude's family saying 'thanks' or whatever, and that's just awkward...
Maybe it's a tactic to get you to donate for a better tier or something...

I think TotalBiscuits video did a lot for this Kickstarter.

They actually address TotalBiscuit's constant support in a few updates. And this was in their most recent update:
We will be adding a new townie to our game. The Total Biscuit townie mayor. He strolls around the highest-tier towns as a rare spawn in a top hat and monocle. Killing this unit will drop the Total Biscuit, an item that when equipped, makes your Nekro appear much, much more dapper. ;)

game is almost content complete ..... but for some reason storepage got removed recently from steam :-(

Should have checked the forums.

Apparently the game has been abandoned, there's been some sort of infighting among the developers. That's why it was removed from sale. Can't find the exact specifics as apparently one of the devs went on a deletion spree.

It's always too bad when that happens. I hope they work it out, I'm seeing this game for the first time and it looks interesting.

yeah i got the game on steam and its pretty near completion ... just some small stuff is left.
Hope that they can sort it out :-(

Here's my post from the Kickstarter thread.
So it seems Nekro is running into dev troubles - with the team infighting and the game essentially put on hold until it gets sorted out, if that actually happens.

The review is obviously now gone, as the store page was taken down, but it's word for word been posted by the same person on the Kickstarter page:

As someone who backed this kickstarter (was my first kickstarted game actually), I am not happy about this.
