Following yesterday's revelation that Fable studio Lionhead is making an "MMO-like" RPG for the next Xbox, it has now emerged that Kinect Sports developer Rare is working on a raft of Durango games.

Rare is hiring for "multiple" triple-A games for the next Xbox, according to a job ad.

The job spec (spotted by Superannuation), calls for a senior product manager to help create "multiple AAA future console releases".

It suggests Rare will continue to make games in the successful Kinect Sports franchise, but also branch out with new IP. The listing says the candidate will ideally have experience in the action/adventure or FPS genres.

"Whilst continual development of their core releases will be maintained, the successful candidate will be joining at a time where the studio is looking to move into new areas and develop new IPs for future platforms," it reads.

"You will have a successful history of releasing exceptional AAA games and these will ideally be in the Action/Adventure or FPS genre but this is not essential."

Last month former Sega design chief Simon Woodroffe became the new creative director of Rare. "I am looking forward to getting stuck into making incredible games that will be worthy additions to the pedigree of the studio," he said at the time.

Rare has in recent years focused on Kinect Sports, but over the years has released a number of Xbox games for owner Microsoft, including Kameo, Perfect Dark Zero, Viva Pinata and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts.

Makes sense. If Durango has a very high initial cost then there won't be much of a place for casual games.

It's almost as if Microsoft SUDDENLY REALIZED RARE EXISTS.

Albeit without ANY of the people that made it great in the glorious N64 days.

None of the original people are there. Hell, the Brothers Stafford, the guys who created Rare in the 1980's, no longer work there. As far as I'm concerned, this is just a new company with the same name. Damn it, sell the rights to Banjo Kazooie to Retro already.

Here is some other stuff Superannuation dug up but has not been on GAF yet.

Intresting thing about them both? Links have been wiped clean, make of it what you will.

Especially when Rare themselves haven't been AAA since the N64 era.
AAA means budget and people still seem to forget that.

This is funny for all the wrong reasons.

Just a reminder: when job listings say "AAA" they mean the budget, not the quality/scores of the game.

Would any of their recent games be considered "AAA" by that definition? Kinect Sports doesn't seem like something with a massive budget.

Maybe Banjo was their last title like that, or Perfect Dark/Kameo.

It's the Stamper brothers.

What are you actually getting at? Did they give Kinect Sports the title AAA?

Those comments are always useless digs at their games not being a high metric score.

I don't get what his point is either.

But ontopic, in this industry, talent moves around. Even though Rare has lost most of their original staff it doesn't mean they can't hire other bright minds out there.

It will go just like this gen. Early gen = new IPs from everyone. Late gen = sequels. Makes sense financially too, people are willing to give new IPs a better chance when there isn't much competition.

Good news!
I hope Rare is going to gain more general consensus with its future output than what they have done in recent years, looking forward to hear more from them.

Unless it was made by Crytek, I wouldn't want it. Remember, the team who worked on Perfect Dark now work at Crytek.

Well I don't typically dismiss a game before I see/play it and get some info, especially with new talent involved. You have fun doing that though.

I'm actually kind if optimistic by all this. It makes sense that all Microsoft's big first parties (other than 343 obviously) are working on new stuff for 720.

I thought GAF lived kameo. Or did I make that up? Does anyone know what MMO-like could mean? Are we talking console Diablo 3 here?

Holy shit, it looks like Microsoft may actually be being serious about making NEW games again. With investments in several new studios and allowing some of their studios to make NEW IPs it looks like the next Xbox may just start off on the right foot. I'm excited to see what they can create on new hardware.

Exactly, new talent should make a new IP. I just don't want to see Perfect Dark play like a Halo or Call of Duty. We have enough of those.

What, you mean the team that gave us Haze? That would be perfect.

Kinect Sports games have great production values, and quality Kinect development, what with the tech still being rather new and working control schemes still being experimented with, probably isn't all that cheap either. Figuring out what to do with all that analogue data is a lot more complex than receiving discrete digital (and some simple analogue) inputs and sorting them out.

I think they are in a good position to be able to invest onto more IPs for the XBOX now considering its success. This should bring them more money to pump into more resources now that the invester should be happy to let them do what they want.

The highlight on this thread has to be Remedy working on a new "mature" IP? I can't wait to see how that turns out.

So basically, Microsoft have got all of the gang together again to make new IP's on the Next Box.

Interested to see how they turn out.

This. While a crytek Perfect Dark would be fucking awesome just because people left Rare doesn't mean everyone there is incompetent. I'd definitely check it out before dismissing it.

FPS = Fishing, Pool and Swimming for Kinect Sports Season 3
AA = Avatar Adventures

Wins thread.

-------------

But yeah, MS were making a 300 million dollar investment into core games right? I imagine

Rare - New IP
MGS:V - New IP
343i - Halo 4
Remedy - New Title
Lionhead - MMO thing

Make up the bulk of this cost.

I actually suspect the reason MS are doing this is because they're actually very pleased with the results 343i have delivered. Hence the new studio investment instead of simply buying out random companies.

This is exactly why I've held on to my 360

Although since this is for Nextbox, I don't see why I am.

Show me what you got, Rare.
