Oooh, some interesting game in there.

But I'm disappointed they're doing a glitched run of A Link to the Past.

Whoa, what... Madness Returns in 3:00:00? I'm gonna try and be up for that one, that sounds incredibly fast.

When was the last SDA marathon? It doesnt feel like it has been that long. Their last marathon was incredible.

Was just going to create this thread, good to see it was already made! Looking forward to seeing how this develops.

I plan on watching as much as I can without dieing due to sleep deprivation.

It makes me wonder though... why is the summer marathon so early this year? last year it was in august or somewhere around there.

The Contra 4 run was manly and awesome. I have to go back and watch the archive for portal.

Carcinogen is the RE master.

why would anyone watch a 6 hour long rpg run.
there is hardly any skill involved, and to me it seems really boring...
speedruns should be about plattforming skills, some nices glitches and awsome tricks, not about enduring an 12hour long game in 1 or 2 sittings -_-
I am out until the first part of the FF borefest is over

Because they are popular with the viewers and they bring in a lot of donations, last time FFVII run collected a lot of money. They can be viewed as a chill-break moment during the marathon.

Define skill? Being able to prepare correctly is a needed skill in speed runs more so depending on the game. The only thing I'd say and rpg would lack in is platforming. Have you watched any earthbound speed runs? That game has a lot of glitches/tricks to use and abuse.

FF8 is lower on the glitches and more on planning out a route, which I can agree makes it not the best speedrun to watch, but no speed running an rpg is not just "enduring an 12hour long game", but about abusing the systems unique to each game to complete it in the fastest time (this holds true for all speed runs).

I personally enjoy the planning aspect of rpg speed runs since I do it myself.
I guess I take it personally since you said it takes hardly any skill, which I think is
having a narrow view of "skill".

I really enjoyed FF7 last time, it was like reliving the memories I had of that game, except experiencing it with a bunch of people online. I also learned a lot of game breaking techniques I had no idea about.

To me, skill in speedrunning is much more than planing a route and following it. The only real random thing in rpgs are battles, pretty much. hardly anything unexpected happens. And I find such a thing boring, furthermore, most runs are 3 hours plus, and to me thats just to much to bear. Like SMK said last year, "its all execution and research, no skill involved".
Which is also the only rpg run I could watch from beginnig to end without falling asleep. (pokemon yello last year, pokemon blue in january). Rpgs aren't a genre that's fun to watch imho, it's a genre that needs to be played.

I am glad I stayed awake though, because typing of the dead and VVVVVV were great to watch

Super Metroid is up!

edit: Wait, what's going on? lol

edit edit: ah. I've never actually played through SM that way. Didn't even realize it could be done.

It's a hack? That explains it.

The donated for method was missile underflow.

Which is still pretty nifty. It seems like the animals never live, because everyone always donates to off them. *sad face*

Any idea when the archive will be up? I looked on the twitch TV page on the homepage all I could find was videos form other SDA members in the group.
