Take-Two's CEO (Rockstar/2K Games) comments on "mature" game Wii U support, next-gen

Strauss Zelnick has made some interesting statements about the company's future strategy.

There's more at the link.

Gamasutra said:
While Nintendo fell short of its goal of whipping gamers into a frenzy for the Wii U at this year's E3, third-party publishers, who see the system as a key driver of future growth, were reticent to downplay its potential. Instead, they cited the system's long-term potential, rather than its initial impact.

Take-Two Interactive Software chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick, however, was not among the cheerleaders.

While Take-Two will make sports and family titles for the Wii U, its bigger core franchises have been notably absent from the list of partners. And that seems unlikely to change anytime soon.

"We haven't announced anything," says Zelnick on the possibility of moving the company's mature titles onto the Wii U. "I'm skeptical."

Don't mistake that skepticism for a pessimistic attitude about the next generation of consoles, though. If anything, Zelnick is eager to kick off the next line of game systems, because he sees it as a chance for Take-Two to continue to advance its position in the industry.

"For a company like ours, it's a great opportunity," he says. "[New console launches] separate the winners from the losers -- and we fully expect to be one of the winners."

There are four keys to success in a new console cycle, Zelnick believes -- owned intellectual property, top-tier technology, top-tier development talent and a strong balance sheet.

Take-Two, he says, has all four. And that could help it overcome the launch cycle hurdles that many publishers struggle with.

"I don't want to minimize the challenge of creating titles for new technology or the economic challenges of doing that, but if you get it right, it's a terrific time to launch a new IP," he says.

...

"I don't aim to annualize our non-sports titles because I think you run the risk of burning out the consumer -- even if its very high quality [product]," he says. "Some of our competitors have had this trajectory where they extract a lot of value and the IP goes away. We're trying really hard to build permanent IP. And if you have to rest the title for a few years, over time you'll extract more value. ... We're not trying to create something good and market the hell out of it. We're trying to delight customers with something great -- and market hell out of it."

...

"We haven't optimized our system – our slippage last year tells you we haven't - but we've made a lot of progress," he says. "When I showed up here five years ago, THQ's market capitalization was four times that of Take-Two. Ubi's was twice Take-Two. EA's was 25 time Take-Two's. To say the very least, that's not remotely the way the world works today. Would I like to apply a little more rigor to our art? Of course I would! Look at me, I'm a suit! But I have an excitement for what our team can do."

I'm not sure if I understand what he meant but I guess no Borderlands 2 for Wii U. :(

Edited: That's if they deem Wii U as loser console, in some sense.

I think I am in 2006 again. Amazing how pigeonholed Nintendo is.

So ultimately he's saying "no ports, but maybe we'll come up with something original we think will sell". That's not really promising a lot, or anything really.

If GTA V doesn't come to Wii U at game launch that's Nintendo's failing as much as Take Twos. It's bits of news like this that will end up having me hold off on buying Wii U. I will not buy a system that's going to be a Wii repeat.

It's promising I won't get a Wii U.

Winners indeed. So much so that their major release this year cost them a minimum of over $100 million.

We are the champions.

Interviewer: "So why did another Nintendo console miss out an a mainline GTA game?"
Reggie: "Well you see here. What we've got here is failure to communicate."

Nintendo needs to step up their game and start having talks with these developers/publishers

So in other words no big IPs from Take Two on Wii U (Borderlands, Bioshock, GTA) unless it is a situation where a unique game is made for the platform. (see GTA Chinatown Wars)

Who needs GTA when you have Lego City Undercover.

So no hope of a Civ game on Wii U either? That's a shame, considering touch-screen versions of Rev already exist on DS and iOS.

I just don't get what the licensing teams do at Nintendo. When an interview like this comes out, why aren't they immediately kicking down Zelnick's door and convincing him that there will be a healthy ecosystem for games like GTA to thrive on the Wii? Isn't that someone's goddamn job at that company? Is it basically a foregone conclusion at this point that Nintendo consoles will not get third-party support anywhere near the level of their competitors?

Do you really think they don't try? Third parties are not interested.

Games like AC3 and COD and whatever other BIG titles are going to have to sell A LOT to convince bigger 3rd parties.
Unless AC3 dumps U-Play or at least makes it sane I'd probably get that on Wii U over PC, so that's something. Hell, I'm hoping that it's free of framerate drops given that's going to be locked at 30 like the other two platforms.

The outlook really is utterly atrocious. Dare I say it's time Nintendo go back to formula.

They can, and they probably will.

Maybe. I know personally a lot of people that bought into the Wii hype never play it and won't even bat an eye at the Wii U. I know it's purely anecdotal but even with E3 the mainstream press wasn't impressed with what they saw. Even on NPR I heard some analyst talking about how it's nothing big ... it's like a tablet that doesn't even remotely do tablet things.

I won't count them out and depending on price I might even bite for a couple Nintendo exclusives like I do every generation but I don't see it being a true Wii-like phenomenon.

Because first Nintendo would have to invest in this ecosystem themselves. Nintendo needs to publish/ moneyhat exclusive "core" games to attract the audience. Why should Take Two release GTA on Wii U when almost every GTA fan already owns a PS3 oder 360?

I don't think the Nintendo franchises can keep the Wii U boat afloat ...
Of course they can. That's not even a question. And it's nothing like the situation with the Virtual Boy, in case anyone is thinking of throwing that one up as a counter-point.

Zelnick has every reason to be cautious, though. Take Two did of course deliver an exclusive (at the time), original, built from the ground up GTA game for the DS that had perfect Nintendo-esque synergy with the hardware... and nobody bought it.

Then it got ported to the PSP and sold a fraction of what it did on the DS. But noone brings that up because it would be against the kiddy argument.

edit: <10000 on the PSP in first month versus 80k first month on DS from what I remember.

Note to publishers: Your games will not sell on a platform that you do not release them for. Fact. The opposite is also true.

It is up to the third-parties just as much as it is Nintendo to create an ecosystem where these games will do well. We do not know how much Nintendo has been pounding on the doors of various publishers but statements like this lead me to believe that it doesn't matter how much because minds have been made up long ago. Ubisoft will be getting several sales from me because they are choosing to support a new platform with top franchises and new, unique games that take advantage of the new platform. If other publishers were doing the same then they would also be getting my support.

By releasing a handheld in 2011 that is weaker than an ipod touch, doesn't support programmable shaders, only has one analog stick and still uses friend codes? Why would anyone expect any better from the Wii U when the 3DS shows they still don't get it?

I suppose that's where this mysterious new IP from Retro comes into play. Why it won't be there on day 1 is beyond me. I know games take time, but they should've planned ahead!

That makes no sense. You can do better than that.

Vita is clearly the way to go.

Like I mentioned above, it's anecdotal but I don't think they will see the success they saw with the Wii. I see more of an NGC happening with the Wii U.

No one brings it up because it was incredibly stupid of them to charge $40 for a port of a DS game on a more or less dead platform, and before release announcing an iOS version being on the way.

Which is even more hilarious considering that the PSP got 3 other (or was it 2) GTA games before so clearly there was an ecosystem there....
Or maybe nobody was interested in overhead GTA...

Hey you're back!
Even then the PSP GTA games were the biggest sellers on the psp, it seemed like a sure sell for them.
Heck even if the Liberty City Storied it a bit it wouldn't have sold that much more anyway.

I didn't bring it up because I didn't think it was relevant to the point - with Chinatown Wars, Take Two did exactly what we all think third parties should be doing on Nintendo systems, and it didn't make a damn bit of difference. This was way before there was even a hint of a PSP version.

It's a really great game, too!
