Rumor by WiiU Daily: http://wiiudaily.com/2012/06/nintendo-offering-insane-incentives-to-publish-on-wii-u-eshop/

The source, working at a European developer who previously informed on Wii U Achievements (a report which was later confirmed by Nintendo), said that Nintendo is taking digital downloads seriously this time. He said Nintendo wants to offer all retail games — first and third party titles– available as downloadable titles on the console via the Wii U eShop.

“They’re offering insane incentives for publishers to sell retail games as downloads on the console. You’d be stupid not to take advantage of it and go retail box-only”, he said, adding “The new platform is perfect for indie devs, it’s a whole different ball game than WiiWare. They’ve learned a lot from that mess”.
“It’s just a much bigger revenue cut that you’d get selling it on any other platform at the moment, plus promotions on the online store. If they [Nintendo] pull it off and it gains traction, it’ll press the other guys [Microsoft and Sony] to give more of the revenue to the publishers. It’s very good for us who make games”.

Very nice to see from Nintendo especially. They should have a section for each console they have created and then have the entire library for them sold to consumers.

Where do you store these games? Wiiu coming with a HDD? I dont remember seeing that. Doesn't make any sense if you can only store one game at a time.

Very, very encouraging. I often thought that this was perhaps where they could make inroads in third party appeal, but I wasn't sure they'd be willing to sacrifice the revenue.

But are they going to support it outside of simple incentives?

It doesn't matter what cut the developer/publisher gets if no one knows where the market is, where the games are, or have sufficient disk space on whatever storage solution Nintendo packs in with the hardware.

Sure, it'll give them a good initial boost, but if a developer can sell 2, 3, or 4x as many units on other systems for a slightly smaller cut..

You'll probably only have enough storage to download one game (if that game is under 8 gigs).

From there you've got the sandisk option, or external HDD.

Nintendo seems to expect gamers dedicated to downloading will be willing to buy an external form of storage.

You can use any usb external HDD with it.

Compatible with any external USB drive.
Just what I want next to my tv... Sounds greats...

My wife will love "more wires" as she puts it. They need to come up with a dock that will connect the wiiu console itself with room for a 2.5" drive. That would be awesome.

They are using 25GB bluray disk in the wiiu right? So you couldnt even get one game. Then you have patches and updates. Not much storage.

Crap from these Nintendo/Wii fansites should be banned.

You've never been enthusiastic about the system, I'm not particularly either, but do you really have to go into every thread about it and piss and moan like you expected any better?

Good news, I think for 3DS/WiiU to be big big successes Nintendo have to really win online.
3DS e-shop is pretty good, if expensive - hopefully the WiiU will offer an even wider array of titles as it should be good to port from PC.

Just a heads up: this website also claims that Rockstar said GTAV is coming to the Wii U.

Would Eurogamer publish if they didn't have some more info - or it didn't fit stuff they'd been hearing? Am not sure. But generally - whats their history with these sorts of things?

Umm... because we will? Not trying to stereotype us, but this tends to be true. More likely than not, we're going to get an external HDD to store games.

Can we just have one Wii U thread without you crapping on the system? Just one?

How feasible is running a game off of a USB External HDD? Am I right in saying it's a good bit slower than a traditional SATA HDD?

Yes you are limited to usb speeeds.

"Crapping'? Because it has 8GB of storage and this thread is about downloading full games. Where do you put it?

Are the concerns not valid?

Again are my concerns not valid? I dont understand why I cannot raise concerns. I dont even post that much. To say I'm in every thread is pushing it...

But I will buy it just like every other system.

Most of that is facts we know with some extra hype(rbole?) on top, no? We know they want to offer retail titles digitally, that they have incentives for retailers to actually be decently supportive of the digital market as opposed to pulling a PSP Go, that most likely they have kept the revised DD only games rules of 3DSware, if they didn't also improve them further, which is a far cry from WiiWare's shortcomings anyway, etc. Only some details like getting a smaller cut than other companies per digital sale are unknown and questionable. As well as if they will indeed have every single retail title available digitally or if some publishers could still opt out of it for whatever reason, but they don't even promise that it will be 100% with this rumor, just that the incentives are so good most are likely to go for it. Which is probably true, I doubt selling digitally could result in a worse deal than retail.

I don't think you can imagine how horrible it would be to have the option of having a hard drive next to the console. Even those tiny passport USB drives. The mere option would have his wife in fits. You see, his wife complains a lot. It's not that he's complaining about something nonsensical. It's his wife.

Hearing about incentives to publishers is actually a very good thing. Despite heavy competition in the DD sector benefitting customers, the 30%-give-or-take figure that the DD platforms claw back hasn't changed one bit.

You think games will actually use up all of that space?

One thing: I remember some time ago a post done by wsippel in the Beamdog thread...oh, here it is

From everything we hear from developers, the eShop is a pretty great platform. If there is a size limit, it seems pretty damn high (ReXX was 512MB in Japan and is coming to eShop), there's great tech support, same 70/30 split as with Apple or Steam with no minimum payout, Nintendo allows demos, DLC, updates, user generated content and web integration, pricing is much more flexible, and Nintendo actually markets marquee titles. There also doesn't seem to be any content approval - you're free to do apps (Colors or Rytmik come to mind) and Nintendo won't tell you that adventures or pinball games are "too niche" (something Steam is know to do). Only problem seems to be that they're seemingly slow as molasses and have pretty strict QA, but there's always something I guess. Oster's tweets leave the impression that nothing changed.

So, if WiiU eShop is an even further evolution from 3DS eShop, I wouldn't find this rumour so crazy as many of you think.

A good start will be maybe to refund the little indie developers that were entousiastic/fool enought to go Wiiware, and ends up to give away their own games to pass the sales cap in order to see some money from Nintendo.

If the games are published in retail box at first, there is no really need to incentive this, except if you want to leverage third party sales by calming down second-hand market (unlike Iwata said in the june investors Q/A session).

That's clever politics, but I don't like it.
