So….I am representing Gaf and my web site fastestsector.com at the Goodward Festival of Speed to compete against 15 of the best UK racers to win tickets to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, a tour of the Red Bull racing facility, and the chance be crowned the Red Bull Gridsters Champion.

And I am bricking it.

What’s this all about? Red Bull are trying to find the most adaptable UK virtual racer around, and have set up a competition here to find the best. After our successful F1 2010 and F1 2011 GAF championship, I was nominated by Codemasters to be a wildcard entry for this tournament as a F1 2011 specialist.

The games being played are:

F1 2011
GT5
Forza 4

What’s more, if you live in the UK you too could also be there with me if you enter the competition here: http://www.redbull.co.uk/cs/Satellite/en_UK/Red-Bull-Gridsters/001243205340908

So what is this thread for? Tooting my own horn?

No. This is where you guys come in, because I need Gaf’s help. Although I won the F1 league we organised here, I am just not up to scratch in GT5 and Forza 4, and with the level of competition expected (the number 2 of GT Academy will be there), I am truly expecting to come dead last. I need all the racing tips, videos, setups etc. I can get – so any tips/suggestions for either of those games from veterans here will be much appreciated. I will find out which cars and tracks will be selected this weekend, and will update this OP then.

I will be tweeting live from the event from https://twitter.com/#!/FastestSector - giving updates and pictures from the event, so those interested can follow how I do at representing GAF.

Thanks for reading, would be amazing if another Gaffer gets the chance to come along too so do enter if you are interested!

Head over to gtplanet.net for GT5 stuff, there is no better place to go. There's a reason most of the GT Academy guys frequent GTP.

I could *possibly* offer a few tips on FM4, but you'd be far better heading into the OT for tips. I'm decent with a controller, but some lucky bastards in there have proper wheels which are supposed to make the game FAR more sim-like.

FWIW, if those F1 comps were held at a reasonable hour I'd totally be flying over there to represent GAF. Just so ya know.

Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
Dude, If you're heading to Goodwood, my pub is on the Estate! Gaffers get a free pint!

I'm going to travel to your pub, just to get a free pint for saying I'm a gaffer.

For Forza 4, race with all the car assists off except the racing line if you're playing mulitplayer(if you're playing single player, I replace the line with the rewind ability).

Racing with the assists off will give you more control of the vehicle, also make sure the steering is set to simulation and tire degrading is set to the simulation setting.

For example, I usually race:

ABS: Off
Steering: Simulation
Stability Control: Off
Traction Control: Off
Shifting: Manual with clutch

The only assist that you might need to work on is shifting, if you race automatic your shifting is obviously done for you, but the AI that shifts for you does it in terrible time. Manual is an upgrade from automatic and is easy to do, manual with clutch is hard to grasp at first but really easy once you get used to it, your shift time with manual with clutch will be much faster than automatic transmission and manual transmission.

Difference between manual and manual with clutch is instead of just pushing one button to shift(manual), you have to press left bumper(clutch) first and hold it, while doing that you press the upshift button(B I believe). The other difference is in manual transmission the AI does the clutch for you. It takes a bit to get used to, but like I said, your shifting times will be much better.

EDIT: If you can play F1 racing games fine, Forza 4 shouldn't be that much harder.

Is it going to be played with the wheels?

If yes, just one advice:

SPONGEBALL™

..and have bare socks while driving, but I guess you know that one already.

Wish you best, such a great opportunity for UK GAF.

I'll be there on Sunday, last year was a hoot so really looking forward to it again this year. If I can find you I'll come along (depending on what day you're there)

Yes, all games are going to be played on playseats fitted with Fanatec wheels.

Best of luck to Lucius86 at the event!

Well, when you put it like that, I am going to HAVE to take you up on the offer!

If by some miracle I made it to Sunday (top 8 drivers only!) then I definitely come by and say hi!

I will definitely post pics here and a few more at fastestsector.com, along with some live tweet pics from @FastestSector. I am totally expecting to lose, but still have some brilliant fun. Thanks for the opportunity Helios.

DUDE! I'm heading to Goodwood with some of H-KARTS, I'll head on over to wherever this shindig is going down at some point if I can.

What's the plan?

Edit: I've just entered for the hell of it, used one of my karting videos from this year seeing as I have like.. 1 half-assed video of F1.

Yeah, this is cool, congrats! Sorry I don't have any tips to give you. Maybe easy on the free beer at said pub above prior to the competition, lol.

BOOM. Got to love a gaf meetup. Maybe I will have to stay the night even if I don't win as I won't be able to drive home.

Perfectly able to grasp the inherent value of the fishing game.

Holy crap, good luck!

Well, I know you'll be ok with F1, but with Forza, it's just a case of pushing like mad and learning the tracks really, you'll be fine!

So, an update regarding this…
I’ve been given a list of what tracks and cars I will be racing for the three games on Saturday. They are as follows:

GT5
Suzuka – G37
Laguna Seca – BMW M3
Nurburgring GP / F – Nissan GT-R

Forza 4
Hockenheim Ring (National) – Nissan 370Z
Road Atlanta – Aston Martin DBS
Tzukuba Circuit – Pagani Zonda C12

F1 2011
Spa
Silverstone
Sepang

Seeing that I am only expecting to be there for the Saturday, I am not going to practice the Sunday tracks – that can be done Saturday night/Sunday morning in the hotel room if I amazingly qualify!

The interesting rule is that NO modifications or setup changes can be made for any game – everything is set to default. So some practice in F1 will be needed, as the cars behave very differently to a tuned setup. It also means I will be at a less of a disadvantage in Forza4 and GT5 with my lack of experience.

The one key thing left that is still to be decided is which tyres will be used – in GT5, the racing tyre is SO much grippier than the sport tyre it’s ridiculous. I feel pretty happy with my GT5 practice so far; I’ve built my consistency up pretty well already over the course of Sat/Sun, but now I have to get my teeth stuck into Forza 4. Setting my alarm an hour early to get some practice in each morning this week before work.

I so could have done with an extra week's prep, but c'est la vie. I'm just hoping I can get Thursday and Friday off work to practice.

Apologies for not turning up to the pub. After the day was complete, I was so SO shattered I started driving home, and an hour into my journey I shouted 'FUUUUUUUCK' as I only just remembered our pub meetup. I still am gutted I missed out - next year I promise!!!!

Anyway, I will post exactly what I did at Fastest Sector.

Firstly, thanks for the support - I know I wasn't as active as I hoped, but things were pretty intense so I had little time to do anything.

Alas I came last in my group - today really wasn't about practice whatsoever - instead it was who could adapt to the Fanatec Wheels and pedals the fastest, and could you cope with not being able to hear a thing. And after my pretty poor showing in F1 2011 when it first came out, it's clear I take time to learn new stuff. I just didn't get to grips with the equipment, and by the time I did it was 2 laps to go in Forza 4.

Gotta thank Red Bull for this, but damn I was blimin unlucky with pretty much everything. F1 2011, won the first race on stage but it DIDN'T COUNT. I still don't know why, but we had to re-race Silverstone.

Next race was Spa - in the wet (not part of the rules). I got t-boned coming out of T1, lost my front wing into the wall - 4th place.

Next race I got a 10 second penalty for an incident in T2 (the other driver apologised after - again not my fault), then whilst struggling to still understand the wheel I cut a corner, got disqualified.

After that was Silverstone - was in 3rd, catching the leading 2 when they spun - I hit the 2nd place car (nothing I could do) - got 10 second penalty. Everything was going against me - damn you penalty system.

All this while the commentators got my name mixed up with another guy, which was off-putting.

GT5 and Forza 4 I came last in each race - though Red Bull messed up big time with our GT5 races. Firstly, we used different tyres to what the rules stated, so my practice went out the window. Next, we raced the shortened Suzuka track (not the full GP like in the rules), and they accidently left auto gears on my car, which meant I span out when shifting down one time. And they wouldn't re-race.

All my bad luck aside, I wouldn't have qualified anyway because I just sucked with these Fanatec steering wheels. With the other racers using a G27 mostly, they could adapt faster as that wheel is closer in feel.

But I had tonnes of fun, and everyone in my group were decent people - so I am not going to Abu Dhabi, but I am very happy I gave it a go. Also, Goodwood is AMAZING. If you have not been, you must go.

Blondie didn't want my phone number.

So here are some pics:

rbgrid3.jpg

The least important part of the prizes - the trophies. The main one was huge!

rbgrid1.jpg

Seb playing GT5 in the Red Bull prototype car. He was on top form. Mark was only there Sunday - it made me sad.

rbgrid2.jpg

Me chatting to the presenter. I didn't realise until 10 seconds before we went on we were going to get asked questions and interviewed. It was pretty nerve-racking!

rbgrid4.jpg

Me in action racing in F1 2011.

rbgrid5.jpg

Serious concentration face.

rbgrid6.jpg

More serious face. At this point I realised I was going to suck, as even in F1 2011 I was struggling with the wheel.

rbgrid7.jpg

rbgrid8.jpg

Proof I was actually winning one of my events! And yet this did not count. I was pretty gutted deep down, though I tried not to show it.

rbgrid9.jpg

The actual entire booth. They were awesome, but a bit narrow. I could have done with it being an inch or two wider for my shoulders.

rbgrid10.jpg

Post race interview - not going to lie, I was disappointed I never got to chat to blondie on camera.

Thanks everyone once again for your support!

Good work mate. Looks as though you had a great time! We were absolutely manic, so I'll go ahead and assume you had a quality weekend.

And I will hold you to our meetup next year! In fact, hopefully this might prompt a few more gaffers to come along.

Was going to ask about those cockpits, but I only just noticed the complete lack of speakers on them. At all. They look comfortable, but no/shit sound is a bit of a screw-up :(

Did GAF/FS proud! I might have to keep my ears to the ground if there's anything around Melbourne F1 for something similar. There was some crappy Renault one where you drive a Clio around the track using the iOS version (it was shit) but hopefully Red Bull will have something more substantial.

Thanks for the opportunity, but I think the organisers may not ask you for F1 experts in the future, as I didn't really represent very well!!
