22nd June 2012 – Get ready to marvel at your newly discovered creative skills when New Art Academy launches across Europe for Nintendo 3DS on July 28th. Jam-packed with 32 brand-new lessons, New Art Academy will have you painting and drawing your own masterpieces and sharing them with your friends and family in no time.

New Art Academy features both Introductory and Advanced lessons - whether you are an old master or a complete novice - offering easy to follow, step-by-step guides to a variety of drawing and painting techniques, styles and materials. You will be surprised how easy they are to pick up and how quickly your techniques can improve. To enhance your learning experience even further and to resemble your real-life inspirations best, some of the reference images for the lessons are now displayed as 3D videos, such as a tree with moving leaves or a river with flowing water. If you can’t get enough of the lessons - don’t worry - there are plenty additional ones coming your way in the near future.

If you just want to doodle or to practice a technique you have just learned, such as creating a stunning portrait, the Free Paint mode gives you an unlimited blank canvas to use at your will as well as a wide range of art materials to practice with.

A comprehensive art studio awaits - New Art Academy expands on your toolbox of paints and pencils, with new art materials for you to master including colour pencils, pastels and a variety of accessories at your disposal. These additional accessories include Scratch Pads for testing your artistic implement of choice, Colour Wheel to help choose similar or complimentary colours for an image when using the paints and even a Blending tool for smoothly blending the pastels together. The accessories help to create a more in-depth experience for the user and further extend the creative possibilities whilst learning new skills and effects.

Don’t let your proudest artistic achievements go unnoticed as with New Art Academy you have plenty of possibilities to show off your talent to family and friends around the world. Send your greatest masterpieces to your loved ones via SpotPass or Nintendo Letter Box.

That’s not all though as for the first time in an Art Academy game you can create and share your own interactive lessons for your friends to enjoy, allowing you to become a virtual art teacher. You can now select a subject, perhaps from a photo taken on your Nintendo 3DS, then teach your friends a favourite technique or style, and share it via local wireless or online via SpotPass.

Become the curator of your own gallery! Hang your art in your in-game virtual museum and admire your masterpieces as you walk around.
.
To begin learning new artistic techniques and painting masterpieces try out New Art Academy when it launches exclusively for Nintendo 3DS across Europe on 28th July.

Coming in Europe the same day as 3DS XL ( and FreakyForms Deluxe), don't know about US.

This reminds me i've still got lessons to do in the first one, 32 lessons is a lot so it should blow the original away content wise.

Is the teeny 3DS screen an ample space to learn or practice anything in the realm of art? Really? I say this as a happy 3DS owner. Just doesn't seem like the right home for something like this, at all.

This is the kind of shit tablets were made for, isn't it?

Both it and the original for DS were designed with the XL models in mind, IIRC.

Colors 3D disagrees

They need to role out ingenious marketing for this in the UK. Fingers crossed for Stephen Fry on the couch at home just having a go with his 3DS XL...

I see. I've never heard of Colors 3D so I assumed it was someone's username.

This makes the temptation to buy the 3DS a bit stronger for someone who is interested in learning some new techniques.

This alone justifies the existence of 3DS LL.

Back in the day I tried the demo on my Phat, then played the actual game on my DSiXL and well, a bigger screen does make a huge difference, once you try it you cannot go back.

That being said, I hope they'll bring a new version on WiiU, it just asks for it, hopefully this time around they'll let export/upload drawings outside the cartridge.

Can you really learn to draw with this? I bought Colors on 3DS, but I'm so bad I only use it to watch others paintings.

I can tell you I think I have actually learnt something from the one on DS; iin a short time I somehow managed to draw some decent pears, oranges and trees, although I found the most advanced lessons to be a trifle too hard for my drawing skills.

I am more than happy with Colors 3D. I think any of the notable features of this Art Academy title are featured in Colors 3D, but the lessons are something that's definitely lacking. That may have me recommend it over Colors, but if the pricing for AA is around $30, Colors may come out as the better deal (under $10, can't recall the real price).

Apparently Colors! is currently the most purchased eShop title, which shows how much people are interested in drawing; so in case it doesn't cut into Art Academy sales, I think this one will sell really good too.

At least I will get it day 1.

I might get this just so I can become less shit at drawing and then maybe produce something worthwhile in Colors! 3D

Can’t wait for a Wii U version though. Zoomed view on GamePad and full view (or different zoom level) on TV screen is going to be amazing for this. Should be a killer app for non-gamers and anyone who loves to draw and paint. I would also love a cartoon academy, where I could make my own „Simpsons” episodes.. [homerdrool.gif]

"Colors!" was so much more awesome than Art Academy that it was not even funny.

I hope this one is at least in the same level of "Colors! 3D"

Definitely need something like this on the Wii U. Use the D-Pad to move your zoomed in view on the uPad screen. Draw using the stylus, shade with your fingertips. Look up at the TV screen to see how it looks zoomed out.

Wii U also needs a pictionary game. Instant win.

I agree. I would pay 10-15 Euro at most for this. The original was also overpriced. Still, Art Academy is probably the best teaching tool for painting I've seen so far.

And this seems to be even more feature rich.

The two DSiWare apps cost 8€ each, which seems fair. The retail release was 30€, but still a huge success.

"This product does not require age classification."

Since when is this a thing? Even Wii Fit had to go through the ESRB.

...Since like, forever?

We don't have the ESRB in the UK. We have BBFC and PEGI, who can pass a product as educational (ie. no age classification needed). Also, the game hasn't been announced for the USA yet.

Won't things like this feel worse on a 3DS XL with the giant pixels? Like you'd do one slightly diagonal or curved line and yet see it drawn in a clearly jagged way picking the closest pixel in a seemingly inconsistent way? Anyway, I'm really interested in software like this and will definitely get it if I end up buying a 3DS (probably not XL). It's too bad there's nothing like that for the iPad.
Seems kinda expensive for what should be a $5 app
Can you point me to a $5 app like this one? I've been looking for one for ages (since getting the iPad2). The better art apps I've seen on iOS cost more than $5 outside the occasional sale and don't include any lessons whatsoever. Or usually any kind of realistic behaviour, they mostly are very photoshop like in how you do the colors and use the brushes and other tools.

Colors! 3D always had the "Photoshop-feel" while even the original Art Academy produced natural-looking paintings much more easily. Since New Art Academy now has pastels and a blender tool, it's likely to produce even better results.

If you like drawing, I believe both are worth owning.

Everyone says the DS Art Academy was much better to use on the DSiXL. Also, the pixels in the 3DS XL have almost the same size as those in a DSLite, but there are more of them so the screen is bigger, so they aren't "giant" by DS-standards. Do you think a 50" TV looks more jaggy than a 26" one?

Wii Fit has "gamey" features. Art Academy is strictly an application so it should have no need for ESRB ratings.

I meant compared to the normal 3DS, not any others. Since the resolution of the XL is the same but it's 90% larger, almost double.

Great news, i prefer the natural look to the brushes in Art Academy compared to colors 3D. With Art Academy I could paint results i couldnt get elsewhere, Colors!3D's titular 3D is nice but I feel like im using a way less practical version of my tablet and computer. Wound up not using it much to my surprise

Hope it comes to NA and with an eshop release!
(also the real real megaton for me is Freaky Forms Deluxe! Never heard of it before reading the OP. sunk hours into the original game)

Yep, this 100%. Colours 3D is a straight up, unapologetic digital paint tool designed to leverage the convenience and flexibility that only a software tool can afford whilst Art Academy is a full fledged paint and pencil simulator designed to mimic the real thing as closely as possible for better or worse. They are very different products with very different goals and each have their advantages and disadvantages.
