Folks,

I'm an old timey wimey poster here at neogaf, reformed and back after an extended absence.

In my time away, I've become a bit of a booster for mechanical keyboards. I know a lot of gaffers are getting back into PC gaming (thank you Valve/Steam! i apologize profusely for all the nasty comments i made about gabe's weight back in the 00s!), and I thought it might be a good time to start an information resource on gaf for THE GREATEST KEYBOARDS EVER MADE (protip: mechanicals).

OK, now for static resources, the best at the moment is probably the OCN mechanical keyboard wiki:
http://www.overclock.net/t/491752/mechanical-keyboard-guide

GEEKHACK: http://www.geekhack.org/ is THE english-language resource for mechanical keyboards (we also have some excellent wikis, but we're having technical difficulties with them at the moment). You are strongly invited to come join us and geek out about keyboards, gaming, and other geeky stuff. We also have many active design and small-scale manufacturing efforts, as well as an excellent and very active classifieds board (COI note: I moderate this board).

DESKTHORITY: http://www.deskthority.com/ is excellent for local commerce and european language conversation if you're across the pond to the east.

OTD.kr, KBDMANIA.com: Korean-only; the world's foremost keyboard experts.

KBTALKING.cn, others: Chinese-only; the world's other foremost keyboard experts.

In the meantime, you can also feel free to ask questions about keyboards, recommendations, etc. in this thread. I will answer as time allows, and if there are other gh'ers or deskos around, please chime in!

Thanks everyone! Happy clacking!

"Us" and "We". Are you advertising your site?

I prefer http://elitekeyboards.com/

He says very plainly he moderates at Geekhack.

Anyway, elitekeyboards is a vendor and Geekhack is more like NeoGAF; a hardcore enthusiast/hobbyist forum that attracts a lot of industry attention (for better or worse). Easily the best mechanical keyboard resource on the internet (that you can read in English at least). You just have to be able to tolerate Ripster if you use the forum. ;)

EK is a vendor (and a great one at that -- Brian who runs it is a good guy, and was pretty active on GH until business got too busy for him in the last year or so).

Ripster is no longer on GH.

Unfortunately, we're having some technical issues right now, but I'm happy to answer any questions here on gaf until we get running again.

I got my HHKB Pro 2 from Elite Keyboards, absolutely great to deal with.

When I decided I had to have a Topre board for work, http://www.keyboardco.com/ being UK based were the place to go to. Website looks like it's from 1998 but their knowledge, choice of boards and other niche interface devices (natural mice!) is fantastic.

Gonna need those mesmerizing gifs up in here, stat

edit:
Newegg has a nice selection under the name Rosewill.

Cherry blues (very loud; tactile feedback; 50 g actuation; best for typing): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823201040

Cherry browns (somewhat loud; no tactile feedback; 45 g actuation; some gamers prefer this keyboard for RTS): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823201042

Cherry reds (like black switches with only 45 g actuation): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823201044

Cherry blacks (loud; no tactile feedback; 60 g actuation; some gamers prefer this keyboard for FPS and RTS; wears out fingers): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823201045

Bottomline:

If you don't know what to purchase, go with the Cherry blues.

oh yes.

both brian at EK and bruce at keyboardco are good people. highly recommend doing business with them.

topre 55g is probably my favorite all-around switch. it's so smooth and relax. i'm a pretty poundy angry typer though, so 45g tends to be too light for me (i can't even rest my hands on a key or else i get sssssssssss).

eta: geekhack is currently down due to an extremely malicious hack (don't go there right now!). but it will be back. i'll make an announcement here when we relaunch

Also a thread on this in the gaming section

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=458496

Whats the everyone's opinion on the Corsair Vengeance boards? Are they worth picking up?

No, stay clear of them. I have the K90 which I already retired. They keyboards have firmware issues with stuck keys, mainly backspace and sometimes modifier keys ( Alt / CTRL / Shift ). So when writing something it'll suddenly start erasing everything until you smash the shit out of your keyboard. Sometimes it'll also spass out because it's "holding down shift". They have a firmware update coming out soon but a fix for this issue is still TBA.

Personally I just ordered a Das Keyboard Model S ( Ultimate EU ) - Can't wait.

I do love my Noppoo choc mini.

Overclock and Geekhack are both great resources for reference. It's nice to see a little contingent form here on GAF, even though the gaming thread is a bit more established.

I'm in the market for a mechanical keyboard and i'm looking in the 100-150 range. I game a lot on PC and do a lot of typing for work and would prefer the ergonomics and sound of a mechanical. What is the best fit in that range? I see Das Keyboards in that range on Amazon. Any idea? I am pretty out of my element here.

I have this Rosewill with blue switches and I love it. It's pretty much the same exact thing as a Filco majestouch but cheaper. Can get one with different switches too, the blues are good if you type a lot and want the clicky sound

Awesome. Newegg won't ship to NC. When did that start? Thanks for the suggestion though, after looking at some reviews that is exactly what I am looking for.

the rosewills have the same ODM as filco, but may not be build in the same factory, and aren't quite built to the same specifications. if you don't need the tenkey pad, you can also consider the CM Storm quickfire rapid, of which the same is true.

They shipped that to me about 2 years ago and I live in charlotte. I also got all the parts for my new computer last year in september (motherboard, cpu, ram, video card, hard drive, case)

I dunno when that happened but that sucks. I haven't heard that until now

edit - actually looks like its just that specific product

I rarely use the tenkey and Amazom has the storm for 64 bucks. I might pull the trigger today after reading some more reviews. It sounds clicky and looks sleek and solid. Hmm. Decisions Decisions...

@blainethemono - yeah I used them last month and after checking it is just that product. That is my kind of luck haha.

Pulled the trigger on the storm. I had some Amazon credit saved up so I got it super cheap. I've had chiclet keyboards for my past two keyboards and they become trouble to type on after awhile. Can't wait for it to get here!

Not to bump an old thread but My CM Storm Rapidfire came in and I LOVE it. I never thought I would care so much about key feel and sound but DANG what a difference. For 60 bucks it was well worth the price too. Sturdy, tactile, and comfortable to type on.

Just to try things out I tried to go back to my old logitech solar keyboard with chiclet keys. No way. Couldn't do it. Thank you for all the advice guys!

I just got a Cooler Master Quick Fire Rapid. Not bad for $60 but the CM branding is ridiculous. Might get some custom keycaps from wasd to get rid of all the ugly ass logos.

I'd love to rub out all the branding on the keyboard chassis itself too if anyone knows.

I kind of felt the same way. The windows keys being Storm logos but replacable with Coolermaster logos was pretty meh. I'm not a fan of the CM storm above the arrow keys either - it'd look much sleeker without it.

Anyone know a good place to order custom keycaps?

I got a CM Storm Quickfire Rapid with Cherry MX Blues a few months ago and really liked it.

My wife got me a Truly Ergonomic 209 with Brown switches for our anniversary in June, and I've been using it exclusively. I'm still not entirely used to the key layout (especially the shift keys), but it's incredibly comfortable, and the reduced width keeps my mouse close at hand.
