Wii U has “capability issues” due to single processor, says VentureBeat’s Takahashi

VentureBeat’s Dean Takahashi has placed his hands on Wii U during E3, and found the console has capability issues due to its single processor having to drive multiple displays.

Speaking with alist, Takahashi said this single chip has to process games onto the television screen, the main game screen, and provide imagery for the tablet controller. That’s a lot of work for a system which “itself isn’t that powerful.”

“Nintendo only showed games with one game pad controller and the TV [at E3],” he said. “Most games out there, if you’re in a social setting, you want two controllers. Nintendo didn’t show any games that do that. They admitted in a Q&A that the games are going to run slower if you have two game pads and playing on a main display. That’s a fairly big issue for them.

“They made a good case that you can play with one controller and multiple Wii controllers, what they call asymmetric gaming where one person is looking at the small tablet screen and trying to deploy zombies while the people playing with the controllers were all on the main screen. You come up with very creative, different kinds of games where it’s one against four, or one person going online. They tried to justify and turn into an advantage this major weakness of the Wii U, but I think a lot of people saw this as a weakness.’

Takahashi said the strongest point for the console were the creative games, which explore the capabilities of the tablet and the touch screen, but still, he found there wasn’t an “obvious blockbuster,” out of all that was shown.

“They may have had a good one in ZombieU, but in the demos it didn’t necessarily play that well,” he said. “Nintendo came up as a pretty big disappointment at E3.”

Wait, isn't it's the GPU that gets more workload because of the two visual outputs?

I still don't understand why Nintendo is releasing a new console now. It will be outdated in a year or two and find itself in the same pathetic situation the Wii is floundering in right now.

If I didn't know any better, I'd think the guy is just trolling.

AFAIK, this never happened.

I've seen this interview a few times now, and I'm still not sure how Dean Takahashi is a qualified source of information.

I would guess that Nintendo would be very happy to have their next console enjoy the same situation as the Wii.

And of course, the one thread that actually has PRAISE in it won't reach 3 pages.

Capability issues? Single processor? Doesn't he mean gpu? I don't think the main intent is to have complex 3D graphics on both the TV and Wii U controller at the same time. Like the DS or 3DS.

The Wii has literally been a zombie console for the last year or so. Waiting any longer may do some serious damage to Nintendo and the Wii brand. The Wii U's power issues(if they are real) also come from the added screens and small console case, not the release date of the console. Nintendo could make an absolute beast of a machine for less than $400 that could easily compete with the 720 and PS4, but they are spending extra power and money on the gamepad idea instead and they are focusing on making an especially small box that is not noticeable.

Their approach would see them facing these same issues even if they released the Wii U in 2013. Dean Takahashi could be making shit up though so who knows.

Why not? That would just mean it'll end up as a glorified minimap in 99% of games.
I hope they do some actual innovative stuff with that thing.

This alone proves he has no knowledge of the tech. It's been discussed here to death, and it's obviously a limit on the streaming technology; nothing to do with power. Even a game with NES graphics wouldn't get 2 controllers streaming at 60FPS, unless both show the exact same video (say, a fighting game).

*Waits for marc^o^ to educate us as how this is an advantage/how you shouldn't be playing with more than one WiiU controller/something more creative than what I can cook up now*

Personally, I do think this will taken into account when a game is being developed and hence shouldn't be an issue for the end user.

I'm really trying restrain myself here, so I'll just say this- this is a very bad article. That's all I'll say.

Have fun everyone

Well in that case, he is a moron. The Gamepad has no lag due to the streaming tech, something that can't be said for Smartglass or PS3--->Vita.

That's completely different. That's a chip for streaming, not, for example a chip or small SOC to process the visual data specifically for the pad.

I know I am in the minority here but I really don't care about the tablet, I just want everygame to be playable with the Wii remote unless it actually benefits from it (dream pokemon snap game)

The Wii is dead. It's the PS2 circa 2007 when only Buzz and Singstar were selling. Nintendo should have released a successor last year, the console is selling almost zero software outside of party games and Mario titles.

Can this thread please be closed. There is no credibility in the article at all, just misinformation and bullshit.

Isn't a decent CPU very very cheap right now? How much would a decent quad core CPU cost? They say the controller is expensive and that's the reason hardware was cut back but I'm not seeing it. The screen is very low Res (I think like 800x554 or something like that) and its not OLED hell I dont even think its IPS. I see no reason why they can't put a decent inexpensive quad core CPU, the same gpu they have now with around 4gb of ram for $350.(someone please correct me if I'm wrong.)

I'm sure some will do some clever stuff. Most will most likely use it for a map and virtual buttons.

Just wanted confirmation on whether the controller screen is just and upres'd and up-sized version of DS's touch screen?

It is a multi-core processor confirmed by Nintendo and IBM, I don't get what's the big deal, Assassin's Creed ran just fine on the console.

Dean Takahashi is more full of shit than the poo world in Conker's Bad Fur Day.
Just saw his face in the article. Dude looks really untrustworthy. I kinda feel bad saying that. :P

I'm still gonna read it a couple of times just to see what I can glean from it. It's best that we don't judge a book by it's cover.

Edit: His smile reminds me of those smiling animals from CG animated movies. Can't remember the names. Now I see it though.

I actually disagree. The difference between 720p and 1080p is much less noticeable than 480p and 720/1080p. It will definitely be outdated, but it won't appear nearly as outdated due to the fact that this will be able to output in HD.

Which is exactly how Nintendo want it. I don't know why anyone is surprised by these things, or why anyone was surprised the Wii was anything but a fad, a gimmick, a novelty that the mass market ate up and discarded just as quickly. It is the most toxic and insulting system this industry has ever had to endure.

Oh man. On second though, keep this thread open.

This is gold!
